  • In this video I take apart a Korg KROME Workstation to fix a broken C# key weight. This is an 88-key board from a local church. Previously I took this board apart to find out the issue, but needed to order parts and book more time for the repair. Follow along for the repairs.

Amazing video. I've been thinking about pulling apart my Krome 61 so I can whiten its very yellowish keys with peroxide. Watching and rewatching this video is starting to give me confidence that I can do it. Massive thanks for taking the time to do this, and for explaining the process so well.

When I was moving I managed to jam one of my keys up and out on my Korg SP-170S. Was super unsure about pulling it apart myself but thanks to your video I went ahead and got it fixed in under an hour! (The little black nubbin had pulled off and gotten stuck in between the key and the weight, just needed to reset it and it was good to go)
I appreciate you posting this so I didn't lose time and money trying to find someone else to fix this for me! Thanks!

Great video. Thank you for posting.
I watched your video and the keybed for the Krome 88 and Kross 88 appear to be the same. I just replaced an octave of keys on one of my Kross 88 (first generation model) synths earlier today. The hammers looked identical as well. The removal of the top cover looks the same, as well as the entire keybed.
Maybe this could help those with the Kross models as well. These are not the best keybeds in the world, but they are sufficient for most users.

This is the exact thing my nightmares are made of. With my luck, I'd have extra screws leftover, LOL (good job, BTW).
The black plate that's in front of my keys (Korg M50 88-key Workstation) is loose and it's loud AF when I play. I'm pretty sure it's an easy fix but this is the only video I was able to find that even somewhat related to my issue. Whenever I need to replace a broken key, though, I'm comin' back to this video!

@@AllamHouse I was puling my wife's Krome apart and thought I'd better look it up. Found your video, then I found those last two screws just before the I got to that point in the video:-). Different problem on this keyboard - a high F# has been responding erratically. There's nothing wrong with the key action, just sometimes not producing much sound, other times too much and often delayed. I suspected a mechanical issue with the switches like dust ingress, but everything seemed OK visually. I've given it a bit of a clean , and reflowed a couple of solder joints. We'll see how it goes tonight when I putit back together. Hoping I don't have any screws left over, too!

I have heard of people having this type of issue before, but never had to fix it myself. There are little felt and/or rubber pads inside that seem to breakdown over time. Hey I have this exact Kong Krome 88 keyboard. My issue is with touch response. So when I touch the key softly, it plays loud as possible instead of quietly to match how hard I press the key. The physical structure of the key appears to be fine and in tact however I’m thinking it’s internal. Do you know what the issue may be or which part I may need to repair?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před rokem +2

First I'll say that this is one of two keyboards I have ever worked on in my life so I have minimal knowledge. Also, this was a few years ago so I am going off of memory. I believe there is a sensor under the weighted hammer that senses the velocity and that will determine the output volume of the key. The troubleshooting I would do is...
      1) See if I can inspect it for damage
      2) Remove it if possible and swap it with another one close by to see if the problem stays on the same key or if it moves to the swapped key.
      3) Once the problem is identified I would look to replace the part or move to a very end of the board (low or high) where you are less likely to use that key.

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, I am not a repair shop. I made this video while I was helping a friend, but I am mostly a sound engineer. Good luck with with the repair of tour keyboard.

That is interesting. I’ll start by saying this keyboard was only the third one I have messed with and I have only dealt with broken hammers (weights) in my experience. Your issue sounds like it is either a bad connection or a bad screen. Both would require you to dismantle the board (similar to this video) and then diagnose. You can start by cleaning the connections and making sure it is sold (use contact cleaner). If you still have the issue then it’s time to work with your local small electronics person or just replace the screen. Good luck.

is changing the dc power inlet hard? I got the piece.I'm just a little intimidated opening it and putting the piece... The DC inlet connector is very frail. And a week design in this keyboard....@@AllamHouse

No more Korgs for me, it’ll take a year to get parts.. The technician even recommended burying it and buy something else!! Grrrr!!

@@AllamHouse I saw that right after I added the comment, and ordered the part. I noticed that some of the other keys feel... kind of off, now? I have to take it apart again anyway :/ guess Ill see if I did something wrong. lol
