Learning about laundry (and personal hygiene care) should be a mandatory health care class. I am a big believer in having a good ironing board and iron and using it. Why buy nice clothes if you aren't prepared to care for them? Great video! Thanks for taking the time to get this information out there. A lot of clothes that end up in landfills would probably be still hanging in closets and worn if they had been properly cared for.
Tip for pretreating food stains: If you get oil or a food stain on your clothes, lay them flat and put some baking soda on the stains. I let them stay overnight. Then, shake out the baking soda in the sink, put a little dab of clothing detergent on the stains, give a quick rub, put in your garment bag if applicable, and place in the wash. I air dry.
Thank you! I haven't used fabric softener in over a decade and don't know why people are so into them. I hand wash all my family's clothes and line dry everything. . .mainly because we have no room for the appliances where we live. I go to the laundromat for bed sheets and such once every month or two.

I like drying my whites in bright sunlight, it bleached them a little bit.
Regarding ironing: don't tumble blouses and such at 1600rpm, but lower, like 800, and iron them after 6-12 hours hanging on the clothes line instead of when they are fully dry. Not only shake them out, but also follow each hem between your thumb and finger, so they are fully flat. wrinkled hems are a pain to iron and get the most wear already. Oh, and just don't buy a dryer. If you can't deal with the moisture in your house, check the insulation first. Well insulated homes usually can use some washing moisture.

My husband had no idea about the wash symbols on the tag till like a month ago. He was asking me about a new shirt of his. And I said to look at the label. His response: "I don't know! It just has a bunch of hieroglyphs on the wash table". I was so confused then laughed so hard when I realized what he was attempting describe to me. But I love having a printed list of them in my laundry area for easy access.
I love and try to live by all these steps. I still partially air dry a few items but literally for ten minutes and then I line dry them the rest of the way. (this is mainly when I am packing for a trip and realized I didn't do all the laundry so I am more on a time crunch). The other part about line drying is I can lay my shirts and pants and let them hang in a way that isn't bunch them all up

Very useful information! Thank you very much 😊 I’m struggling with washing tencel clothes especially darker colored ones. I love the tencel fabric but I often notice some white streaks or spots after washing. (Low heat, hand washing cycle, delicate detergent, no softener) It would be so helpful if you could share your tips 😊
White streaks are usually detergent residue. Try less detergent, an extra rinse cycle, or a different detergent and see if that fixes it.

tip for detergents, generally speaking, liquid detergents work better on cold water than powder detergent.
Fabric softeners in the dryer can make the air in the neighborhood toxic for folks with chemical sensitivities (like me). Too many days I try to go outside to enjoy my garden and I'm forced back inside. Using them also means that you can't be fragrance free as your clothes will always be perfumed.
I can’t air dry because of pollen! I have lots of clothes racks. What about steaming vs ironing?
Is there somewhere inside you can dry them?
I'm not completely sure, but I think steaming is better for your clothes than ironing, but steaming usually only works well on lighter-weight fabrics. Energy-use wise, they seem to be about the same though.
What is considered a "small" load vs. a "large load"? My landlord recently replaced the washer and the new one is so huge it fits my entire hamper in one load! It determines the water level automatically but I still to manually choose the amount of detergent. I use laundry detergents sheets that say to use 1 for small/medium loads and 2 sheets for large loads - how large is too large??
Oh good question, that's tricky! So with a typical machine a medium load would be roughly 1/2 full and a large load 3/4 full, but with a bigger machine that would obviously not be so easy to see. It really depends how much bigger it is, but you can probably roughly scale down (so a large load is maybe between 1/2 - 3/4 and medium less than 1/2?). Or see if you can look up the machine manual and what it says about load size and then compare that to a regular-sized machine.
And it is good to know that you can easily cut recommended amounts in half. They want to sell you detergent, not help you get your clothes clean.
How do you deal with the crunchy fabric after air drying?
I just shake them out a bit, but some other things you can do are:
- put them in the dryer for a quick (no heat) "fluff" cycle
- hang them outside since the breeze can make them less stiff
- try using less detergent because detergent build-up can make them stiffer than normal
- try using a little white vinegar in the wash (1/4 - 1/2 cup), some people say this helps soften clothes but there are mixed thoughts
That happened to me when I washed a jean skirt. I just ran my hands down the material (as if they were a flat iron), and it softened immediately.
that's sexism. why just assume mothers are the ones to teach that? fathers makes the laundry too!
Considering the generation gape, I think for most of us in our thirties, it was our mothers who taught us. So sexism; no, just a bit of history that is changing.

My hubby is the laundromat here. I learned all the tricks from him, and he irons all my blouses. I only do the kids stuff, as I'm not as precise.
