The World's Craziest Roller Coaster That You've Never Heard Of

  • Years ago, rcdb would tweet a link to a video of a roller coaster in Japan that blew my mind, not only because the ride itself was unlike anything else, but because I’d never heard anyone talk about it. I knew one day I’d have to share the story of Daidarasaurus and it has finally come. The story before is actually very interesting too, as Japan receives no credit for their impressive steel coaster innovations, ahead of most of the world at the time. This is certainly a ride I’d love to go back and time and see for myself, and the rest of the video about the creation of the ride is certainly worth a watch.

Heres the link to the full video of Daidarasaurus construction and opening. The video also has a crazy rotating wild mouse and other interesting attractions at one of the last World's Fairs ever. Enjoy!

What a great video! I love hearing about the early history of steel coasters. Crazy how ahead of their time these Japanese manufacturers were back in the 1960s

My mind is blown by that shot of 5 long trains going up 5 lift hills next to each other. I did not know this ever existed. Thanks for telling these stories and giving these rides the recognition they deserve. The way we revise history in the U.S, even very recent history, is so annoying.

A dueling coaster with five 42-passenger trains! Holy crap. With modern operations that thing would be a capacity machine, you could easily get over 2,000 riders per hour I bet.

I came across this a few years ago when I was nerding out on worlds fairs or something. What I didn't realize is the Japanese early use of tubular steel track. I guess I was fixated on their layouts, which seem to lack everything todays coaster enthusiast look for. Thanks for making this video and bringing this coaster into the light!

The land it use to sit on is now a Mall. While I had known a large coaster once was at the location, I didn't know any of this. The more I learn about Expo 70, the more I really want a time machine to go visit it, just an amazing place it was at the time with barely anything left.

I’m not sure if it was really that serious, I just found it was competitive in terms of records when I was looking up Sansei and Togos first coasters. If you sort all of Japans coasters from opening on rcdb you’ll also see many other impressive steel coasters that most people don’t know about

With over 7,000ft for the two longest tracks combined, all 5 tracks would be about 3,500*5=17,500ft. Falcon's flight is only 13,943ft. I would guess it would still have the record for the most steel used.

Track 3 was much shorter than the others, and tracks 4 and 5 were shorter than tracks 1 and 2 (which were what remained in 2006.). That said, it was likely about 13000 feet of steel.

I got to ride Daidarasaurus in it's extra-long form. It was really a slow and weird coaster in that arrangement. I did get to ride both sides of Fujin-Raijin, Orochi and the rest of the lineup of the time. (I think that was 2004 or 2005)

Great video! I visited the site of the former Expoland park last year to see what was left. Some of the park entrance is still there as well as the convenience store, but everything else is gone. Today there's a large decent shopping mall there with the tallest Ferris Wheel in Japan and a very small park with a few kids rides. There is a gift shop (probably the park's old gift shop) that sells items related to the old 70 expo. If you're into theme park history and in the Osaka area I reccomend visiting!
