I love watching americans and canadians react to UK bands, especially some so distinctively British as Hacktivist. Totally get both the appeal and the difficulties in getting used to grime elements etc but love seeing them getting attention. Some amazing gems in there, check The One Hundred - Kingsman for sure, and something a bit different but same mixture for me is Qemists - Run You or Jungle (ft Hacktivist)

Although I’m more of a Djent/Metalcore/Prog-metal head now, grew up listening to rap in the 90’s and picked up the guitar for the 1st time because of Korn and Limp Bizkit so this is very nostalgic to me and I liked it. Hacktivist = Limp Bizkit for Millennials.

I've loved most things Hacktivist have done but their history since their first self titled EP is very frustrating and IMO a classic metal scene tale of what could have been. That EP was imbued with so much potential on so many levels. They've had sets at some huge festivals, support slots on some huge tours for their size as a band (not least Korn and Enter Shikari) and have themselves toured internationally across Europe and Russia. Heck, I've seen them like 5 or 6 times in the UK at various festivals and their own gigs and they've always killed it.
Yet, despite all of that genuine musical potential and touring pedigree, they've actually only ever put out one LP album with around 5 genuinely new tracks interspersed amongst interludes and re-recorded singles. They now seem to just put out the occasional single like this, which while I do like it is no substitute for the 'proper' album they've IMO never got it together to release.
DVSR, by comparison, despite not having the amazing tour opportunities Hacktivist had (I can imagine it's a lot harder being a small band in Australia) have realised 2 full LP albums and an EP, all with some really good tracks on them. TAIM CJ even featured on their most recent album. They are by far the more solid band, and that's coming from someone who prefers Hacktivist's signature Grime/Djent sound.

The reason they haven't got around to releasing a new album was because they lost a vocalist and guitarist, so they were spending time finding the right fit for them. I believe an album is due out this year at some point

If you're looking to broaden your rap-metal horizons I'd definitely recommend their (DVSRs) 'Therapy' album (I like it more than their current release). It's definitely comes from the same angle as this band, but for whatever reason I find the Rap just sits in nicer.

You could argue that this band is kind of a re-incarnation or upgrade of NuMetal, doing what bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit did 25 years earlier but without the tracksuit endorsements this time. I am not personally a big fan of rap metal, but have to give kudos to the band for this sound, as it works really well. Nice to also hear Numetal influence without the ban on guitar solo's or musical virtuosity this time round...

Musically Hacktivist is more technical and complex than DVSR. DVSR is more the “0010101”-djent and straight. The musicians in Hacktivist are very good, especially the drummer and their old guitarist timfy james who was part of Heart of a Coward. The new guitarist is a well know part of the progressiv/dient scene as well, as former guitarist of invocation and exist immortal. I think the big difference is the rap style, Hacktivist is more grime in many parts and DVSR is more “classic”. In comparison they are both great bands in their genre. Isn’t there is a collab with DVSR on Hacktivists 2015 album I think?👍🏼

  • @michaeltunnicliffe4935

I'm a huge Metalhead who likes to try and be open minded, but often fails to do so. Rap in particular is a genre I generally tend to avoid. Rapping itself is fine, not my preferred vocal style, but its ok. I just hate how its all about vocals and not about instrumentals. I've heard many rap song, Kid Bookie's included which sound like they have potential but the instrumentals bore me and the song as a whole comes across as repetitive, boring and generic. That's why i've liked Hacktivist as much as I have for the past 4 or 5 years. They provide that instrumental aspect which I personally find rap lacks. Some of their earlier stuff is much better though, I think they lost something when their original guitarist (ex Heart of a Coward guitarist) left as he also brought clean vocals to the mix. So i would definitely recommend anything from the EP or first album.
