How to: Execute the Instant Dashing attack (iWDR1) with Katanas in Dark Souls Remastered (PvP tech)

- So simple in nature - the instant dashing attack tech - is imperative for any kind of katana action in Dark Souls Remastered PvP. While it nicely complements Murakumo 1H dashing (running) attacks and works rather well with all the spears, the instant dashing attack technique shines the most when it is paired with the best katana in the game - the Chaos Blade.
Normally to get the dashing attack in Dark Souls 1 or the Remaster you have to make a deep dash, which is not good. It is telegraphed and is extremely punishable on whiff. However once you add the iWDR1 to your arsenal, the game changes dramatically. It is such a brilliant piece of tech and you can get to know it here, with me!

Since very few of you guys can catch me live on twitch (I stream at some odd hours) - I was thinning about spicing my guides here, on CZcams with some highlights from twitch. How about I'll make a weekly series of say ~10 min episodes containing all the fun stuff I encountered live on twitch? Yay? Cheers!

The way it works is that a sprint needs 3 footsteps of wind-up. Holding B and strafing to the left/right accounts for one, changing that to a forward motion accounts for the second step and then the actual step forward is the third step you need to start sprinting.
It has been covered in EWGF Phantom's video way back when.
I don't remember him giving an exact explanation but that's what I thought initially. Thanks for clearing it up (hope you're right lol) :P
Chaos blade? I argue reinforced club infused with racoon, ducktape and rabies is the stronger choice of weapon.
Rabies is OP.
I unironically love glitch/exploit pvp tech. Especially subtle albeit effective tech like this one. I’m glad you’re uploading these, keep up the good work.
You can actually hold B like this for a long time without rolling or attacking if you don't want to immediately do a running attack as well. You need at least 3 steps while holding B - the shortest is hold B while taking a step forward (so you don't roll), take a strafe step, then take a forward step and doing your running attack. Holding it longer is better, because once you start paying attention to this tech it becomes a bit easier to see other players do that sequence for a buffered running attack - holding B and taking extra strafe steps or switching between strafe/forward a couple of times hides your intentions better. Kind of like people who would block with their weapon a lot in DS3 to try to disguise the block buffer for running attacks.
Nice tutorial. This is possible in Bloodborne too, and in that game the running frames come out even faster than in Dark Souls. Of course it's possible to buffer "O" in dodges, backsteps, attacks etc.
I think people were using this technique in Demon Souls too.
Chaos Blade is really good, good backstab damage, good damage, good dashing attacks. But the best? idk it depends. Switching to various top tier weapons is the best weapon in the game.
Nice video man! Good to see people still want to help players instead of just being toxic like me lol
It's amusing to see so many people point out Chaos Blade as not being the best weapon when the community already established a long time ago that Chaos Blade and Murakumo are the best or at least Top 3 weapons in the game.
Really like this series, keep it up!
How do I do this with mouse and keyboard? Even if I press the roll button, my character just rolls
Aside from Chaos Blade, what about Uchi and Iaito - after landing a running attack, do they also get a free follow up R1?
Yes, they do. Every Katana except Washing Pole (AFAIK).
I like you dude but saying the chaos blade is the best weapon is very wrong. I do agree it has the best running attack though. Thanks for the tech video.
Yeh, it totally doesn't have Claymore AR, best combos in the game, incredible reach and super versatile moveset XDXD
neptunusequester if you're a dodging god it's pretty good I guess.
@@neptunusequester curved swords are better
Uhm excuse me sweetie best weapon is fifty different crystal great club +5s you can swap out at any time
"barebones game such as dark sols 3"
wiser word has never been told
So you mean hold circle for half a second then hit r1?
Just interested on hour opinion: what will be the best build in the game? Is it some katana flipping stuff or estoc turtle ?
Midroll Kumo with Hornet.
Not with the removal of dead angles
Hard to say. Both are good with how the game is right now... I'd say that flip setups (cb/sks) and BK shield setups are two major camps right now and they're about equal. Next best tier after those two setups is prob MLGS autism and midkumo.
Wait chaos blade does more poise damage than spears? The source I was using for poise breakpoints said both spears and katanas need 31 poise to poise through a 2H attack
2H Katana WDR1 does 32 poise damage.
No, it does 31, meaning you need 32 to tank.
chaos blade the best weapon HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THE BASE CANNON?!?!?
Nice didn't know about that lol
SkyDragonFight if only this wasn’t easy asf to bs with poise
I Parry U sure still something
But how do I do this on stick?
Lock-on, press and hold the roll button (key is holding it). Then strafe (left or right) like move stick to the left or right until you see your character start the strafing motion, then flick the stick forward and press R1.
All that happens is a kick, way too clunky to be useful on a normal remote
Nvm I am just flicking too fast
Yes, I did mention that you need to START the strafing motion. So have to register the strafe then move forward and R1.
neptunusequester what you didn't mention was that you actually had to start to run forward, at first I was confused because I was under the impression that it was like the run attack buffer in dks3 where it would register your next attack as a running attack even though you are still, but all this tech tech really does is accelerate the running animation by breaking it up into a few other steps. If this tech becomes popular then it will be possible to start reading this tech, as you'll know people are about to lunge into a running attack when they're shuffling around in 1 stop trying to get the steps to register. So I'm curious to how this goes
I'd have to disagree with the Chaos blade being the best weapon in the game.
It's easy to outrange and all, plus the lack of a buffing ability is against it's favor.
At least from my experience in dks1 PvP on the PS3.
Buffing isn't nearly as prevalent or "good" in higher tier DkS1 PvP and the CB is without a doubt the best or second best weapon in the game.
martynoob
Makes sense it's not as prevalent.
Chaos Blade being the best though?...
Sounds extremely odd, katanas are really good and all, not going to say they're not.
But...
They're sorta easy to outdistance or fight against with poise.
Yeah they're extremely difficult to parry, and bleed, but they don't have any distinctive advantages as ridiculous as the Spears stupid range, the insane backstab damage certain weapons, the combos of the claymore (I know it can be toggle escaped from, but I'm sure if the opponent doesn't roll immediately the weapon can still hit,) or other factors.
There's a good amount of weapons with more strengths from my experience which outdo the katana class weapons.
Plus doesn't the Iatio have a better R2 that's can combo from an R1?
I haven't used katanas in a long time, but they're not the hardest to fight against.
No, it is the best. That's just how it is. You are entitled to your own opinion but this game has been out for 7 years now and it's been well established that it is hands down the best weapon in the game.
In a "top tier" skill 1v1 it is the best, there's a reason that literally every high level duelist uses it. Of course in invasions and different player match-ups it will be different but on an even playing field (or as close to it as possible lol) with two players of equal skill it is undoubtedly the best
Alternatively you can back hop (Circle/B) and press R1 to the same result. Very useful for those weapons with AoE range. Good tut!
Hell no. Completely inefficient: unsafe and well telegraphed. Don't do that. The whole purpose of iWDR1 is to make it unseeable/unreactable. By doing backstep R1 you're giving your opponent time to unlock and pivot BS you :/
Get out of here, stoner
It feels like literally everyone in this game uses one of the ugly masks. Is the tiny health bonus enough to justify bad fashion souls?
Yes.
Chaos blade is trash, the laito is the god tier weapon skrrrt.
Wow that’s some good “””””””””””””””””””PvP””””””””””””””””””””
Not gonna lie, whenever you use fighting game terms while talking about Dark Souls I die a little inside.
Chaos blades not even the best katana in the game
