Thanks for the tip with the adapter harness, it`s exactly what I need! Going to order this ASAP to replace my hideous Kenwood aftermarket unit.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for showing how the locking mechanism looks like. I was missing this information and gave up removing the radio, as it didn't move at all with exactly the same clips. Watching all your videos now. I am a 996 enthusiast like you. 3.4 as well
You're welcome!
Really interesting video. I like how this unit looks period. May go this direction instead of a large screen unit.
Thank you; it does everything I need simply and well. It’s hard to find units that ‘look’ correct for the period. Most aftermarket units end up looking like a kids disco!
Stereos which look like they could've been in the car when needed are definitely the way to go, they're modern classics and look, in my opinion, much better with period accessories....I know is a personal thing but apple play and PCCM + are too modern with colourful touch screens...yours looks perfect
Thanks, i'm with you in that thinking! Besides the Bluetooth music/phone connectivity, for everything else I have my smart phone
Perfect oem looking upgrade 😎
It’s works really well to; no bells and whistles but it does everything it needs to do 👍
Thank you for the very informative video, fitted my double din yesterday, power to unit but no sound, your video clearly explained the wiring and I realise now that I haven’t connected all the leads with bullet connections! 🙄
All is not lost - You’ll be with tunes in no time! Glad it helped. Cheers Kieron!
@@TheThrottleCable all working, thank you once again 👍
Hi. Good video. I'm fitting a kenwood double din. All looks similar to yours. Problem I have is the door speakers don't kick in. Non bose. Amp in front. Wiring harness looks similar. Please hell if you can Steve
Sorry Steve, not something I’m familiar with.
V good video of the installation and great spot of a farily period look head unit. I was thinking about replacing my CDR23 but hate the look of modern units. As I have a 986 with BOSE/MOST there will be some added complications. I have seen a video review of the head unit you've installed which complains about the brightness of the display at night - have you found that to be a distraction?
Personally I’ve had no issue with the brightness of the unit. Seems a strange complaint as the instructions give lots of options for dimming! See page 10
fccid.io/Y7O-TRD7423UB-OR/User-Manual/User-manual-3421094
@@TheThrottleCable Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like the DAB version (TRD7412) is the one with dimmable display but not TR7412. If you haven't been bothered by it, it can't be a big deal - good news as the DAB version is almost twice the price!
@@scottfrazer8928 I've just checked and you are absolutely right, it is only the DAB version that has Dimming options.
This sheet gives a good summary:
www.continental-automotive.com/getattachment/c2a7b573-86f0-488a-ad7e-3cfe27605d87/radios-technical-information-en.pdf.pdf
Is the screen (display) brightness adjustable? If so, does it dim appropriately at night (I find that sometimes they are way too bright at nigh even when the brightness is turned all the way down)
And more importantly, is the screen easy to read in the daytime?
Does it match the brilliance of the climate control?
Thanks!
Screen is non adjustable on this model, but there is an adjustable dimmer on the DAB version. That might be the better version for you: TRD7412UB-OR
Im fitting this unit at the moment for a customer and it works with the M490 OEM Nokia amp but A - its not very loud... even on full blast it feels like it should go more. and B - there is no balance adjustment. The wiring to the M490 amp takes the + line out feed from left and right but then a single - feed and on the adapter I've got its just the left and right - feeds joined. Like I say it plays music but doesnt give the left and right separation.
That does not sound right. Do you have the same harness? I have forward/back/left/right adjustment. Also the line level converter has a gain control, I’ve not touched mine but this would allow adjustment.
@@TheThrottleCable no it turns out after a bit more digging that it was an Audi loom. I've just ordered the correct one and hopefully that will bring the correct balance functionality back and a bit more volume.
Hi there! Thank you so much for the informative video. I know this is a long shot, but I am hoping for some trouble shooting feedback. I have a 99 car with front amplifier same as you. I bought this exact same head unit, plugged in the factory connector directly, and the unit would power on but not send any sound to the speaker. I bought this same Connects2 harness, the CT53-PO01, plugged it in, and still the same issue. the head unit will power on, but absolutely no sound. Did you encounter this? Do you have any helpful advice? Thanks, and thanks for posting this video out there. Remarkably, it is the only helpful DIY on 996 head unit installs around.
My guess would be that you amp is not receiving a signal to switch on. Check the blue to blue cable is connected properly on the harness - see the video at 5:30
How good is the sound on this unit? I know that is highly subjective. I value good sound a little more than than looks, so am looking to avoid disappointment. Thanks!
I’d say it’s pretty good; it has improved the sound of the standard setup. However if you’re spending ££££’s on upgrading speakers and amplifiers then the head unit upgrade needs to be relative to the rest of the system
Hi
You mentioned that the CD auto changer cables were plugged in but not used. If you have the CD auto changer would they add that to the harness or can CD auto changer no longer be used ?
Thanks
Hi, no the cd changer would be obsolete - but I’m impressed you still have CD’s in your car! 😃
Hello thanks for the video. I have a 996 W reg 2000. I’ve purchased the same head unit. My car doesn’t have an amp in the front however when I connect my head unit I have no power ? Can you advise ? Many thanks in advance ...
If you had a head unit that worked previously then you must have power in there; double check all your connections are as intended. If in doubt use a multi meter to test which is your live feed and that it’s connected correctly through your adapter harness 👍
When you ordered radio did seller understand which extra wiring harness converters wete required for the car, or did you have to tell them what you need?
I ordered the radio direct from the continental web shop. For the harness I researched first on the Connects2 website what I needed before ordering from a local car audio shop.
Hi there. Did you have to splice in the battery and ignition cables or did the original Porsche harness have these with the same connectors?
Hi, I didn’t do anything other than use the connects2 harness - I wanted to leave the cars harness original
can you reverse the video so that the back round matches the a/c heater console display. background would be black letters on display would be yellow. IE inverse or reverse video???
No, not as a standard feature of the radio. I guess you would have to modify the unit. It’s a nice idea if you can make it work.
What do I need to do to have the clock shown on the display? I can get it to show but only briefly. Thanks
I‘ve had the chance to have a look and don’t think just a clock display is an option; the display defaults back to show your source.
Two questions.
Do you have to turn the unit on after turning the car on? Sounds silly, but I watched another video where that seemed to be the case.
Does your bluetooth automatically connect every time, or do you have to manual connect on your phone every time?
Easy answers!
Yes you need to turn it on.
Yes Bluetooth connects automatically once phone is paired (I have used with several iPhones).
Hi there, do you know if the volume knob is removable just by pulling it off or if it will require getting a little more surgical. Thanks so much!
Sorry but I’ve no idea! Are you considering to remove the chrome trim? If you are I can say it’s not offensive once in the car. It ties in with the gear shift surround and door pulls.
@@TheThrottleCable in my case it's a '95 M3 which has an all black interior (no chrome or metallic accents). I'm super OCD about these things but it's not too bad regardless. Much appreciate the video and response 🤝
Hi. Thank you for video. Installed it in my Boxster, works fine. But when I turn ignition on, the radio unit is off. I need to press button to turn it on. And then everything is reset, it plays song from usb key from beginning. Is it same with yours?
I have to press a button to turn it on, but no it doesn’t reset. Should save your stations, settings, etc.
It remembers stations but usb key play from begginig everytime.@@TheThrottleCable
Does your radio turn on when the car turns on, or do you have to click the button on each time? Only issue I have otherwise works, sounds, and looks great!
No, I also have to switch it on buddy
you probably need to switch a4 and a7 pins, that worked for me, but it's better to check your car initial wiring diagram first
I have this same Continental Headunit (TR7412UB-OR) to go into a 52 plate 996 Turbo.
Will I still be able to use the CD Changer in the front?
No, CD Changer will be redundant; but honestly i'm more impressed that you have multiple CD's to listen to! :)
I have an external CD player from the factory. Will this unit work with that? Also, how do I know what type of amp do I have when purchasing the adapter kit. Fiber optic etc?
The external CD player will be redundant, you can get the CD player version of this head unit.
If you are not sure which setup you have you are best to talk to you local Audio shop - I'm sure they would be happy to advise you and it removes any chance of error.
I should have clarified that it is a 6 disk CD player mounted in the dash.
Hey, love the channel. Where did you buy the head unit? Thanks!
Hi Jin Song, I bought it direct from the manufacturers web shop.
UK link is : www.vdoshop.co.uk/passenger/audio/tr7412ub-or-radio-usb-mp3-wma-bluetooth-12v-continental-branded-orange-illumination-detail.html
@@TheThrottleCable thanks for that, keep up the great content! 👍🏽👍🏽
What is the “box o tricks”. I’ve got no sound on my unit but power to the head unit. Probably need to power the amp but what the heck is the box o tricks
The box of tricks is the line level converter, it converts a speaker-level output signal into an RCA preamp-level signal. 👍
Can you fit a usb drive in and close the door? Cheers
I had to check this Malcolm as I didn’t even know it had a USB port ! The answer is no, the usb would sit proud of the unit. Cheers
Hey man, did you get the dimmable screen feature to work?
As far as I know the screen is not dimmable - it just runs at a fixed brightness. Honestly I've not taken much notice of that! I think the more expensive DAB version TRD7412UB is dimmable
Hi, sorry to bother you, I can’t find that Radio Removal Key from Halfords. Can you help me to find them please?
Sure just look for Autoleads PC5-93
TheThrottleCable thanks TTC
welcome sir!
Hey man thank you so much for the video. I have a United States set up 1999 996. I'm having difficulty figuring out where to plug in the blocks into the back of the Continental radio. I have the same radio and harness set you have. I see that the black block plugs into the bottom slot on the radio. But the brown block does not seem like it goes into the 20 connector top slot. Does it go in the middle slot?
Thanks for the help.
You should use the appropriate harness adapter to convert the cars original power and speaker wiring connector to a standard ISO connector. The one I used for my car can be seen in the video at 3:10. Good luck!
hello mister? where r u from? i have a car that needs a radio change and i dont trust anyone, or they just try to charge too much
Hi James; I’m in Berkshire - but not planning on becoming a radio installer anytime soon! 😁
I've just got the CR22 unit and dash speakers, any idea if an adapter is still needed?
You should just have a standard iso block behind the head unit with no need for an adapter. Best bet is to slide out the head unit and take a look 👍
@@TheThrottleCable cheers. Going to order the CD version, as I like the rounded buttons look. I'll assess cabling more closely then. Have you though about inverting the colours?
@@clearofcloud2038 yes I have thought of inverting the colours as I think that would make it even better - but I’m not completely confident on the technique
@@TheThrottleCable there is a Reddit step by step for the invert on the Conti. Will be a while before I can try but I'll let you know how it goes.
My 996 has a aftermarket pioneer radio, comes with Bluetooth and a fitted mic, 2016 model. Would this plug and play?
Most likely - your pioneer would have also needed the correct adapter / wiring harness to go from the Porsche connector in the car to the now industry standard iso plug on the radio 👍
TheThrottleCable this sound like a very easy upgrade! I’ve seen the radio with “Porsche” writing on the top left, not Continental - would anyone know where to get this version from?
@@911TVR that's literally just a sticker some people put over the top of the continental logo - really it is that simple! :)
TheThrottleCable brilliant, I’d be happy with no name at all, just want to keep the OEM look
how do you find this head unit? I'm looking to replace the factory PCM 2.0 navigation with a 1-din unit. Interesting to hear your thoughts. I need DAB as well but I'm sure Continental makes one of those too. Where did you source it from ?
They have a dab version of this unit; for my needs it’s perfect. It is not an audiophile piece of equipment, but for the price sounds good and is a perfect update for this car that looks period correct. Telephone and Bluetooth music working well. Very happy with it. 👍
@@TheThrottleCable I have now managed to finally installed the DAb version of this unit, works really well.
@@wakkadakkaify awesome well done - i hope you like it!
@@TheThrottleCable yep great little unit, period looks :)
Has anyone got the model number please so I can get one ordered as my kenwood aftermarket looks rubbish too! 🤮
Can I ask where you bought the Connects2 wiring harness ?
Sure, I picked mine up from caraudiosecurity.com
@@TheThrottleCable Thank you for the info, your channel is very informative and down to earth.
I have factory "680 soundpaket bose analog" and CDR22, can anyone tell me what kind of wiring harness should i buy (link) to connect this continental radio plug&play?
OK, so I got reply from manufacturer, both this one connects2.com/Product/ProductItem/CT53-PO01 and this one connects2.com/Product/ProductItem/CT51-PO02 should work with bose, but I don't know what's the difference, and they look completely different :|
Looking at the pictures - Version ‘01’ has a line level converter to go to an amp; the second one ‘02’ appears to be for a car without an amp
@@kilazz from the description it seems only the 02 version can work with BOSE
Hey bro, I tired emailing this company for this radio but no luck. Any contact info you have that may be useful. I cam see them on amazon but I'm not sure about the wiring any info can help. Many thanks
The manufacturer of the radio is ‘VDO’ and they have a webshop you can order from. If you’re not sure which harness you need just pop along to a local car hifi store that sells connects2 harness’ and get them to check and sell you the right one 👍
I don't live in the UK. Do you know if the place you used to source the 2 parts you mentioned (harness and radio) ships online and internationally?
www.continental-automotive.com/en-gl/Trucks-Buses/Interior-Cabin/Infotainment/Radios/FM-AM-Radio-with-CD-USB-Bluetooth
Do you know if the harness would work with this model? It looks even closer to OEM as it has dual knobs like the OEM radio. Many thanks!
I got my harness from CarAudioSecurity.com the harness is manufactured by Connects2 so you just need to find a local supplier.
The harness is specific to your original Porsche setup, e.g. basic setup, amplifier setup, full Bose setup. If you’re not sure what harness you need speak with your local audio supplier to make sure 👍
The continental head unit I purchased directly from continentals (VDO) webshop.
@@TheThrottleCable Thank you so so much! Asking my technician what setup the car is. If I tell CAS which setup it is, will they be able to ship me the correct harness? I don't want to modify the OEM wiring at all. It is a 996 GT2, so I'd like to keep it fully reversible incase I ever sell and need to revert back to full OEM.
@@michaeltsai8851 yes i'm sure they could. If not alternatively you can ask connects2 directly connects2.com/
@@TheThrottleCable You're a legend, thank you!
here is another website that gives a good overview of all the leads www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/porsche-wiring-harness-iso-adaptor-lead.html
How long did it take you, from pulling the original head unit to completely finished? Also, are you using the original Porsche amp as your power source? (If you mentioned it in the video I missed it). Thanks!
Hi, as I was making a video at the time it would have taken me longer than normal. Working slowly it should take no longer than an hour.
Yes, I have the Porsche amp under the bonnet (frunk) - hence the specific cable for the setup 👍
@@TheThrottleCable ok thanks. It's in my plans for sure. And when I do, this video will be my guide
hows the headunit now? after a few years?
It’s great, I really rate it for its simplicity - I’ve recently upgraded the speakers which has again improved it 👍
Hi I brought this radio, but my 986 has basic audio. no upgraded bose system, but the unit is not receiving power pics:

any help>?
Assuming first you have the correct harness plugged up. You just need a quick process of elimination to check your live feed (eg with a multimeter). this site is great for Porsche wiring diagrams:
