Discovered it early on but I didn’t know they couldn’t detect you while doing it. I thought it was just a little hidden animation, like if you stay idle too long
It works much better in Jak 3, probably the mechanics and and collision detection being improved over 2. I never used it to escape because they always found me, I thought it was just something they put in so that way jak isn’t walking in place into a wall like he would try to in 1. My tactic to escape was either exit the city to dead town/pumping station, those cracks in the slums near Torn that the guards and npc’s can’t enter, or the port.
I do remember seeing this move mentioned in my Italian booklet (I'm from Italy), but I couldn't figure out how to make it (ti did only say: "we can escape from the guards by hiding behind a wall). At first, I thought it was a scrapped tattic that remained in the manual, but then I saw your video and others talking about it and yes, it is actually possible.
I remember when I found out about this I had found it messing around and assumed other people knew about it too. I can't exactly remember when I found out about it though.

The wiki says the hiding tactic doesn't work unless the guards arrived from out of range on the minimap.

I always used this to run away from the guards when they were chasing me
I knew this exists, never thought much of it
Known about this even back in like 2006 when I played. Used it on low hp too.
