    After one to three years the Breville BCG600SIL coffee grinder tends to start bogging down and jamming with a horrible clacking or ratcheting noise during grinding. The most common cause is a worn down plastic impeller that sits below the burrs. This video walks through the steps to repair the problem.

    I had a good tip from the Breville people when I called today: they told me to clean the machine thoroughly (take off the hopper and remove the first burr and clean as much as possible - I use a pointed, curved dental cleaning tool to do this) and then reassemble it and grind a 1/4 cup of dry, unseasoned, white rice through the grinder at maximal (large) grain size and this would absorb the oils that have been clogging my machine. It seems to have worked so far. I ran two batches of rice through it (one on coarse- and one on fine- grind) and it ground the rice very well. Later, I tried with coffee and it seems to be working normally again. I think I’ll do this every month to keep it as clean as possible.

    This is awesome. Works a treat. You're starting/continuing a movement with this mate. Fix your stuff! Don't throw it out. Breville need a slap for making crap like this in this day and age, then not supplying parts.

      A Workdwide mouvement should be started to force Breville to make repair parts available for all their products. Most of their products are quite attractive and do a great job but do not last because they use cheap parts made of plastic in critical components. I contacted them twice regarding a grinder and an expresso machine and each time I was told tough luck, we do not sell parts! Else BOYCOT the Company.

That happened to me today, but thanks to your video, taking it apart (first time) and cleaning was very simple. I suspect a good cleaning is what most people will need, most of the time. Just awesome. After about 6 months our machine could no longer grind beans for espressos. Additionally, we get our beans from a local roaster that produces fairly oily dark roast beans. This made matters worse because the oil from the grinds would clump up and clog the machine very quickly. I installed your impeller and it's now working like a beauty. I did couple of test runs with very oily beans and at an espresso grind and had no problems. Great product!

    This is incredible! I purchased the BCG600SIL a year ago and have noticed that grinding for espresso (grind level set to approx 14), over time the grinder gets clogged, forcing me to manually adjust the coarseness during the grind. I've cleaned and taken apart the grinder and noticed that the impeller blade was indeed worn. Like you, I was told that there were no replacement parts and figured I was SOL. I've just submitted an order for your printed impeller and look forward to installation and testing this out. If all goes well, you've saved me a couple hundred dollars! Thanks for the upload!!

We love our Breville machines (I have a BES920XL too) but our grinders crapping out in a year was about to cost Breville ALL of the good will they had built up with us from enjoying their products!

      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the great compliment Randy! As for the BDC650 and BES920, those models are completely new territory for me. I know that in newer editions of their grinders (like the BCG820) Breville has switched to a steel-clad impeller that doesn't wear down, so I would check for that first to see if the impeller is indeed the culprit.

      Well - Plastic bits would have stayed in the grounds filter cup on your espresso maker - BUT - heating up the plastic bits in the grounds with the boiling water releases chemicals like leaving your water bottle in the Sun. So, I agree - it was the first thing I thought of!

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I seem to have found either a cousin to this machine or the factory in China has started their own run. It's called the ChefWave Conical Burr Coffee Grinder and it's on Amazon right now for $97. Interesting thing is that the impeller seems to be made from what looks like pressure cast aluminum. There's a picture down the throat of the grinder showing the inner burr and below it the impeller is not black but what looks like silver. It's going to be interesting to see if this machine will grind fine enough for espresso.

Just like before I installed the part, the burr will turn fine before beans, and then it stalls completely and makes a high pitch whine when I put beans in. This was the problem I had initially and thought this part was supposed to fix? Any solutions at this point? Does that mean the drive train is worn out? Thanks

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi David, That unfortunately sounds like a stripped drive gear. With the unit unplugged, take a ratchet w/10mm socket and rotate the drive shaft manually CCW through several revolutions via the acorn nut. See if it feels uniform or slips at some point (evidence of stripped teeth). If you tear down to the gearbox you can inspect the gear teeth for damage as well. Acquiring a replacement gear is unfortunately hard. I am not sure if it is the same exact gear as the bcg800, however if so then there is an (overpriced) seller on ebay if you search "breville drive gear". There also is a 3D printable model on thingiverse here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2256996 however it is untried and you would need to print with a glass fiber plastic in order to have enough strength to hold up. Sculpteo might be able to this, but it is a really experimental long shot idea -- you would be the first to try it.

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety +1

      Also, if your beans are an ultra dark/oily roast I recommend going lighter. Really oily beans tend to clump a bit and retain a lot of momentum.

    @matthewcopeland2732 Před 4 lety +1

    Great stuff! I just ordered this grinder new and was wondering if you would advise installing this impeller now? I assume the torque controller you describe prevents damage to the motor, but would be willing to do this work up front in order to extend the appliance life. Also, have you been doing an espresso grind for the two year period shown in your study? Thanks again!

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 4 lety +2

      Since it is new, I would use up the existing impeller first and take advantage of Breville's warranty period. If it does jam when new, try not to let the torque limiter go too long. The torque limiter does indeed protect the motor -- the torque gets too high when the un-expelled grounds get backed up and compacted in the lower chamber. Lastly, yes, almost all my coffee is an espresso grind, usually 18g for a double shot.

      I have this, just doing mine right now. My guess is the burrs are now closer than they were before. I’m thinking that I might change the screw position to account for how much closer the burrs are together. Possibly by 5 holes further round counter clockwise so the screw reaches the stopper earlier

    I’m not super familiar with 3D printing but a friend has one. Do you have a like a design file I could plug into his machine so I could print a few? Is that even possible?
    Regardless, thank you so much for your work!

    Hi! I have a bcg400 (the non pro model) and I'm having a different problem. It turns out that I can't get to the finer settings for espresso (say 5 - 10) because it's gotten really hard to dial the "collar" passing the n°15 mark and it gets stuck there, making it really hard to return it to the coarser positions. Did anyone have the same problem? It appears as something got stuck right there between the burrs. Btw I cleaned the grinder the other day using a cleaning product but it didn't help at all...

    I ordered the part and will do the repair. Has anyone done the repair and could post how the grinder has been grinding and if the part is lasting under dark roast espresso grinding? (Know you weren't axking but I finally seem to be able to spell it espresso instead of expresso.)

    So, does this mean the impeller gradually wears down and discharges bits of rubber into your grounds?

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      Probably right. I wish Breville had done a better job. While not ideal, plastic is not soluble either, so any bits would have stayed in the grounds we threw away.

      Also, after two years and ~85lbs of coffee, the 3D printed impeller wear is minimal:
      photos.app.goo.gl/868a5ReyM2XAyjZq8
      Even for the Breville impeller (which clearly wears much more), any plastic particles would not be soluble in water. The bits would have likely just remained in the used coffee grounds that we discarded.

    Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. Great step-by-step. I have the 600, it stopped grinding today and flashed at me. Took the hopper off, then tried to get the upper burr off... could it be stuck? I noted that you used a good amount of pressure to "click" it off, but I feel like I'm about to break the wire handle. Any advice?

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      You'll want to make sure no beans are in between the burrs first (run it empty with the hopper on for 15 seconds). The first time removing it requires a lot of pressure. You can put the pressure on both sides of the wire handle, right at the hinges.

    • @luckwagon
      @luckwagon Před 6 lety

      Thanks! When I ran it empty, a few beans came out. It then whirred at a high pitch. I think stuck beans was the reason it flashed at me. Upper burr is still stuck though. I applied quite a bit of pressure, still no luck. Thinking of getting some GRINDS to clean it. Do you think that might help?

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      Perhaps there are grounds jammed between the burr and the cylinder wall making it difficult. Other than applying more pressure, it's unclear how to proceed. Maybe tap on it lightly with something to break any stuck grounds free. www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG600SIL+Dose+Control+Pro+Coffee+Grinder+-+Jamming+due+to+Worn+Impeller/96493#s178175

    • @luckwagon
      @luckwagon Před 6 lety

      So, what it was doing was stopping the grind after a couple of seconds, then flashing. Since I couldn't remove the upper burr with the wire handle, I decided to put some GRINDZ in there to try to clean it out. I worked! Don't know how, but it must've cleared out a stuck bean or something. I do want to order that impeller blade you created, because I'm sure this won't be a long-term solution.

    Great Video! I have yet to take apart my grinder but I am having a similar issue. The only difference is my grinder will run, bog down, then shut of (with the dial light blinking). If I unlock and then relock the hopper it seems to reset the grinder and it will run shortly then repeat the same behavior. If I remove the hopper and push down the three tabs, the burs will spin (even with a small amount of beans on top of the burs). Do you suspect this is an issue with the part you replaced or an issue with the safety shutoff (if that even exists)? Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      +Kyle Hill Hmm, it is the first time I have heard of that behavior. Almost what I'd expect if there is a thermal switch to protect the motor from overheating (no idea if there is). When you lock and re-lock to retry, do grounds continue to come out or does it seem clogged up? If the former, then I do not know the cause. If the latter, then my hunch is the impeller is worn. Check though, how do the blade tips look? If grounds aren't coming out, it always boggs down the motor. Either the torque limiter then slips (clacking sound) or the motor overheats (not good) or the drive gear strips (also not good, but not likely in your case).

    Installed the new part, grinds better. The light around the timer nob acted a bit funny. At start up flashed like it did before when it started to bog down and stopped. Ground normally but flashed on timer completion and light stayed on. Flying away from the ice and snow tomorrow. Will open the grinder up in a couple weeks and check it over. Anyone have any thoughts on light flashing?
    Update Mar 30/18:
    Dismantled the grinder again. Everything looked fine, including the new impeller. No evidence of the grinder binding. Couldn't find any obvious broken wires, damage to the circuit boards or timer. Tried loosening the inner ring of the grind selector a half turn just in case it had something to do with a torque limiter but no effect. Probably timer switch but hard to get replacements so not really worth the effort of figuring out the electronics. Though I was being careful but I guess not enough.
    Think this is bang on in terms of the flaw in these grinders. Ground coffee great after the new impeller was installed. However, might or might not turn off. Gave up on it because I'd rather have a grinder I don't have to watch.

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      Something I didn't realize when I made the video: This thing has an electronic torque limiter of sorts. I'm not sure how it senses it. Might be a pinched wire during reassembly though. Also, can't hurt to rotate the mechanism a revolution or two using a ratchet+10mm socket, just to see if it feels like it turns harder for some reason.

      Hi Arya. I only tore down the BCG600 and not the BCG400 however the two models look nearly identical in the online pictures. Based on even the BCG800XL matching the BCG600 chamber, and the identical look of the impeller photos I am >80% confident the lower chamber design will be the same. If you would like to be really sure in advance, there are measurement specs for the impeller at the bottom of the shapeways page. You can do the teardown and measure the chamber and the old impeller before purchasing. www.shapeways.com/product/NASLAGCCP/breville-coffee-grinder-impeller-upgrade

      Hi Gottebp i just tore down the BCG400SIL and all the measurements of the blade seem the same except for the Total diameter (blade tip to blade tip) which is to be expected, mine is about 39mm at thr moment. What i would like to ask is what is the difference between the 'White strong and flexible polished' and the 'white strong and flexible' obviously one is polished and one is not but how does that make a difference in the grinder? Regards, Arya

    • @gottebp
      @gottebp  Před 6 lety

      +Arya Fox That is great to hear, and finally have confirmation for others too. Nice work! FYI, the polished option has slightly less friction against the grounds. Difference in performance is probably not enough to be noticeable however the look is nice. The 3D printing layer ridges are less pronounced and the edges are cleaner.
