- Hurricane Gilbert devastated Jamaica, passing directly over the island September 12-13,1988. An extremely powerful tropical cyclone with the eye measuring 40 miles wide, slammed into Jamaica as a category 5 hurricane with winds reaching 175 miles per hour, killing hundreds of people. A one month state of emergency was declared across several parishes, water and electricity services took months to be restored with almost 1 million Jamaicans seeking public shelters.

@@UntappedLegacyJamaica I was four at the time. I remember being very excited and wondering when this "person" whom everyone was preparing for would finally arrive. Childlike innocence 😂. It was only after getting older I really understood what we went through. (I live in Manchester)
@@simonebrooks1124 the world we live is truly in our minds. ❤ Salute your parents, or caretakers at the time for us.
I remember everything. Every light pole on my street fell down. No electricity for months. Like 6 months. When school resumed we had no roof. So pure sky. Food was scarce . No gas so we had draw for the coal stove. Bully beef till mi tyad. We had to boil water almost 1 year. I could go on and on about Gilbert. It destroyed Jamaica.
@UntappedLegacy
I left Kingston the Saturday afternoon before Gilbert hit.
Weatherman Roy Forrester didn't mention a direct hit until Saturday night's weather forecast.
Returned to Jamaica Thursday after Gilbert hit, on the first flight to Jamaica, an Air Jamaica Airbus from Miami laden with more generators than passengers. 🤔
unfortunately me never born yet me did just a develope ina mummy belly

I remember my mom went out to get something and when she came back in the house she was bleeding. A sheet of zinc she said flew and hit her ON her shoulder.smh.me and my sister and brother were crying. That time I I was 10years old.that morning she looked after the old plaintin, egg and bread breakfast.
Beryl was HORRIBLE...
@@UntappedLegacyJamaicaEVERYONE who lived through that will NEVER forget it.
man i literally saw my sister's bedroom's roof rip off from over our heads. it sounded like a machine gun going off as it peeled away. it was frightening

Wow, I was only 4 years old when Hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica. I stood on the veranda looking out on all that was happening during this period
I don't think anyone at any age in 1988 will ever forget Gilbert. That was one of the most traumatic shared experiences the country had ever gone through.
So a long time Jamaicans unruly and hard ears den tun round a bawl fi justice. Mi cyaa bodda

This really put the devastation of Gilbert in perspective. The sight of the dead man under zinc in the first part of the video, is simply astounding.
Perspective, perspective. Please share the video, at times we are forgetful of what once was, and or are unaware of what could be. 🇯🇲
I was 6 months old when that passed, seems a miracle my parents kept me alive through that
That video clip at 3:57 of that zinc flying is so famous. I was 10 years old living in Portmore and remember this day vividly. Luckily, we had concrete slab roof so we were ok compared to others. Wow, this brings back memories 😊
You're right, thank you. It became one of the go-to Gilbert clips.

Wow, I was 20. I remember exactly where I was ... the Sunday evening the sky got red... that's when we believed the hurricane was coming
See what u say
.the sky got red that's when unu believed we need to be prepared no matter what
Yes, I remember it very clearly. It was an eerie red/orangish glow not like a sunset. And we had a bit of a breeze around 6pm
I remember being in Mona, St. Andrew and looked up at the sky amazed by how red the sky/clouds were. Most people had heeded the warnings and purchased candles and kerosene oil.
Masters supermarket had absolutely no baked products whatsoever. The memories of this monster and the destruction it left behind cannot be erased or forgotten.
I was 6
I was still in my mom belly lol but i know y'all are gen x or boomers now.
They were not prepared for how powerful it was. They didn't even realise that the hurricane eye is calm before the second half of the hurricane wall hits!
Now a days we know better!
We thought the hurricane turn back😂, we were on the road looking at damages when people start shouting that Gilbert turn back, see us running back to our home
That WASN'T the problem. It took a last minute turn but NO ONE in Jamaica knew until Sunday, September 11, 1988. So NO ONE had stocked up on ANYTHING or boarded up. That Sunday was extremely hot. So early Monday, people were on the road, at shops/supermarkets trying to buying food, trying to batten down ON THE MORNING of the hurricane. And on THAT fateful Monday morning, many STILL didn't know.
I remember wild Gilbert, I was only 7 yrs old.
Thanks for this video as I was very small, and you know how parents are during a hurricane very protective of their children; soi did not get a chance to see anything.❤️🇯🇲
We are here for you, Alli. More videos to come. Share the culture, spread the word. ♥️🇯🇲
Wow ! 😮Thanks for this reminder. I have never seen a footage of Gilbert before . A Cat.5 hurricane that totally decimated and devastated Jamaica ! Gosh ! Thank God beryl wasn't a direct hit ! Unlike other islands that have been totally demolished we've been spared once again. Thank God also for our Geological location .
My heart goes out to all the other islands that have been impacted and those that will be.. We are early in the hurricane season so we just have to pray that's this is the worse we'll have for at least this season .
God Be Praised 🙏🏾
Bless your heart of gold Tj. Gilbert creeped across Jamaica. It could've been so much worse. In all things, come what may we give thanks.
@@UntappedLegacyJamaica
Amen🙏🏾
Gilbert wasn't a cat five when it hit Jamaica it was a cat 3 ,it became a five after it had left Jamaica it gathered strength in the sea
@@RodriqueMcbean
Thanks for the correction 🙏🏾
Can't believe a Cat 3 could cause so much damage Shocking !!😮
@@tj6742When it hits directly with the eye passing over the island, you get total disaster. The eye wall has the strongest winds so that's why a Cat 3 can seem stronger than a Cat 5. Ivan's eye was in the sea near the south coast so the entire island wasn't impacted that terribly.
Man I didn't get to see it while at that time but I get to watch it now great speech from the 2 political party on that day God bless Jamaica
This hurricane caught me in Papine.......an I had to take shelter at the University hospital for the rest of the day until the next morning....... All roads were blocked ....everybody had to walk from Alpine to Halfway tree an to wherever they were going......
But people worked tirelessly to clear the roads an clean up the country.....

This is a keepsake.
Caught a glimpse of Ossie Harvey in the JBC studio.
RIP Ossie!
There seems to have been political maturity in what was then dark hour in Jamaica's history, it should've continued.
Only nine at the time and I had no clue to what storm preparedness was all about... Wah, wah, wild Gilbert!
I was 9 years of age too
I was 9 as well!
I remember Roy Forester the weather reporter at jbc said Gilbert is heading directly to Jamaica

Sunday September 11to 12monday 1988 I was in St Thomas and until today July 12 2024 I know a house that still doesn't fix back
I will never forget this day. It was my 6th birthday. I even remember that news guy and all the destruction in Mandeville where I'm from. I remember that some of my friends even went to school that morning and had to stay at the school with the teachers during the hurricane. People did not take it seriously and treated it as a normal rainy day.
Gilbert was more devastating than Beryl 😮
By far.. Beryl is no comparison to Gilbert!
I was a year old when Gilbert came to Jamaica
Guys it's sad to say that a hurricane as Gilbert or even more powerful is heading our we that fact that Beryl from in June and created and still cause devastation so be evident may GOD have mercy on not only us in Jamaica but also the rest the world new pandemic in 2025
Wow - this is golden. I was a teenager then and experienced it all. Happy to see this video.
I was 2 yrs and 11 months when this happened. I remember my parents running with me after Gilbert took our roof 😢
Bwoy Gilbert scared me for Life
I was three years old and I remember my father going on the roof via the mango tree to fix the roof during the storm. The mango tree was lean I think by Gilbert.

I was 15 and this was my first year introduction to Jamaican politics. My mom had 8 children and JLP came with aid and was not gave people who voted for them. We saw zinc and food handed out to political affiliates and was confused at my age. I will never forget

Please remember the distribution of MOST of the relief supplies was done by the PNP administration of 1989.... Remember that PM Seaga deliberately halted the distribution of relief supplies because he said he didn't want it to be used as vote buying ....so close to the 1989 election.
Remember to that when Fae Ellington ask Manley what was his greatest disappointment in politics in the retirement interview with Manley.... Michael Manley responded...."One word... ZINC"
He was referring to the unfair/ partisan distribution of ZINC that took place by PNP representatives.
I knew of one PNP councilor in my area that used the zinc to make his fence, storeroom and sold some!!
Lived in Mandeville at the time, saw the most beautiful full moon after the storm passed.
And up till today's date people still nuh take Hurricane warnings serious 😳
Share it, spread the word. 🇯🇲❤️
I remember the day Gilbert came,I was at Mt Olivet at the time
I remember I was six years old at that time live-in Westmoreland our house was gone as chrilden we have fun
Imagine having to tell big people to take safe ground in the midst of a hurricane. 😢
I had to iron my white blouses with a coal iron. Some kids came with crushed clothes after. That was a time I believe we were in the dark until November so it was quite a Christmas.
My grandfather from a district not to far from Morant Bay in St. Thomas lost his house during Gilbert…
Are you from bath
Gilbert was a force of nature! Still one of the most devastating to pass over Jamaica.
A force of nature....Like all other geographical systems
I didnt see this b4 we didnt get back electricity until a week b4 Christmas .
I was thinking one year old. My family was literally made squatters by the hurricane. Completely homeless.
An extremely difficult time for your family, losing everything with a young baby to care for. You're from solid, resilient stock. Greetings to your family.
I was 4 😢... My first Storm
My God so many things as change over the years..❤😢❤😢
Oh wow this happen when I was 1 years old
I am still traumatized by Gilbert after all these years.
Now we know why the government put a curfew in place leading up to hurricane Beryl. I recall some business places were looted during Gilbert.
The Jamaican people seems to have matured in thst they more or less took the advise of the authorities.
😢my dad was still with us I remember him moments before Gilbert he was on the roof it was no strength to Gilbert it took it and we all went to our neighbors where we cried together 😢😢
I was only 8 years of age!😢
I was 12 years old ,it was horrible

Tragic times
Omg i was not even a month old when this happened my mom said i was on the bed and the lord told her to move me and soon after she did the root caved in the same spot i was laying down. Thank God she obeyed
OMG! Dem pick up the zinc and ran with it.😂😂😂😂
It was my first time seeing a storm ,i did enjoy watching it, 😂😂
I was only 3 then
But I could remember one fallen pimento tree in my grandmother’s yard
I remember living in ja them day's at the age 14.15 things were very sad for everyone around 😢😢😢
