It’s perhaps not quite the same level as your current ideas, but growing up in Lincolnshire, there were always rumoured sightings of large cats in fields around the town… I thought they were just rumours which would be thrilling to believe. However, people I met from various parts of the UK said they had similar “news” stories in their towns. So I googled it and it’s a somewhat conspiracy! It’s called Phantom cats and there are a few cases/claims going back decades.
