*So allegedly, the girl without the mask is supposed to be Selena Gomez. Other than that, this video says so much. No just about her, not just about the Grammys. Not even just about Hollywood in general. Itâs a self inflicted desire to appease to everyone else for acceptance. His face was wrapped up entirely during this VMA performance. The outcome is what we see in this video. Next, the only person in the video with no mask, is a woman. She (allegedly), is supposed to represent Selena Gomez. This goes back to his âMy Dear Melancholyâ EP where he referenced her in the song âCall Out My Nameâ with the quote; âI almost cut a piece of myself for your lifeâ He was willing to help her live. But in turn, the gun is in her hands, cuffed by his. Itâs almost as if heâs begging her to do this. He wanted her to live, but the pain of the aftermath obviously still haunts him to the point he wants to die. She should be the one to do it, since heâs been hurt the most by her. In the song âI Was Never Thereâ a quote âYouâd rather something toxic, so I poison myself again, again. Til I feel nothingâ So willing to make it work, you damage yourself to just be accepted. To be noticed. This is what YOU wanted, this is what I need to have YOU notice me. Keep me around. Even if I hurt myself in the process. This comes full circle, not only to her but everyone and everything. He made himself new, created something that âHollywoodâ would accept. In such a dire need to feel acceptable, he made himself into one of them. Despite it all, he still doesnât get acknowledged. The Grammy board didnât nominate him for anything. Selena moved on very quickly, and didnât seem to care. So even with wanting getting plastic surgery, broadcasting it to the world on the center stage. Jazzing up his suit jacket, trying to stand out, he still isnât accepted. YOU did this. I did all this for YOU. For the media. I did this for YOU,Selena. I did this for YOU, Grammy board. I did this for YOU, Hollywood. But yet, I still am not acknowledged, still I am not accepted. Even when doing what I could do to fit in. The fakes and phonies behind the masks that he puts on a show for are all expressionless. Anything he does...just simply. Isnât. Enough. So whatâs next for a man in denial? For a man who needs to be acknowledged. By past lovers, media and the world stage. This is what YOU, have made me become. Iâve tried to fit in. Iâve tried to stand out. Abel is genius đ, he tells his story on his music, I love it and you guys amazing good reaction.
He throws the "trophy" (double meaning for the Grammys and possibly how he felt about a certain someone; them being his trophy,) and when he throws the trophy, the woman without the mask is the one he is talking to. (Trophy is thrown in the exact direction as her before the scene cuts to her,) almost as if the trophy manifested into her.
This song is phenomenal
For anyone about his face, *its not REAL just for this shoot.* It is for his album where his head got cut off then planted to another body. It also about violent relationship and drunk driving...
I think you could also say like in the context of the lyrics while he is holding the trophy, which when you are a "playboy" a woman is a "trophy" but the trophy is wortless when you are alone and lose love.
I like his idea. Grammy's thought they'd "make him cry" by not nominating him. So he faked his suicide or made it seem like they got to him, but he "saved his tears for another day." This could apply in a broader spectrum too, he could be saying "Don't let oppression make you hold you back" in the chorus.
I love that you guys dissected and decoded the video. The Weeknd lives being symbolic with his videos and itâs incredible.

Basically. The song means- The Weeknd has that face because it is telling himself to save your tears for another day ( because the audience who only see his performance with make up and on screen performance) yet this was the reason his relationship failed because of the fake life of music world and grammys. The girl without the mask represents his real relationship, which broke up as a result of the performance life. He tells the girl to shoot him with the gun because thatâs what kills him everyday ( but he runs away from the relationship) then eventually what comes out of the gun is fake and again for the audience entertainment, yet inside he is feeling depressed due to the relationship break up

A lot of people miss one part of this video, after the girl who looks like Selena Gomez is forced by The Weeknd to put the gun to his head and she screams. Right after this the next scene looks exactly like Hell or Purgatory but it's a flame orange/red backdrop that's moving and it almost looks like a flame moving. I noticed this the first time I watched the video and I haven't seen anyone point it out. I'm glad you noticed it too, great reaction!
