      Yes, I wrote an article in 2021 called "Pete Sampras, The Right Hander Who Played Like A Left Hander". He modelled his game on Rod Laver, and he got more swing on his shots and flick of the wrist often, mimicking a left hander. I think it made his game look unique even if people didn't understand why it looked a bit different.

    I am intrigued by the Shapovalov jump backhand. You can see he does not use them for looksies, but each and everyone in the example was one where he could hit it at exactly the spot he wanted: slightly in front of him and in a sharp corner out of the court. Because he is so high in the air, he can aim it downwards and his racket almost flat. It's beautiful and way less risky than you would think.

    • @rosePetrichor
      @rosePetrichor Před 10 měsíci +7

      Every one handed backhand player knows our weakness; high shots above the shoulder. It's why Nadal was able to neutralise Fed; his topspin pushed every shot so high that Roger had to take it early or not at all. Jumping helps with that; although you lose footwork control you have to unit turn and plant your feet for a solid one hander anyway so you lose less time than you think. If a more consistent player than Shapo tried it it could be a legitimately solid shot

    Net rushing or chip n' charge is not really that new.

      @peterlang3370 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Fair point. But chip n' charge was hardly ever used in the 2010s. As the racket technology advanced, the serves just got too fast. Surely Roger didnt invent this, rather re-invented, somewhat surprisingly.
      Plus he didnt really slice those returns, his strokes were pretty flat.

    Federer invented the jump backhand

    None of these players invented those shots, of course. And obviously there was a felt need to include Nadal in the list, though that forehand is hit by many, many players, and has been for ages. Doesn't take away from his brilliance, just pandering by Tennis TV

    Seriously, who makes these videos? The SABR was not a new shot whatsoever. Just watch some of John McEnroe's matches in the 80s. The banana shot has been played by a thousand different players over the years, notably Martina Navratilova and Boris Becker.
