HOORAH! I really enjoyed my time in the Navy especially as a Corpsman. Learned great things both in Blue and Green side. Yes, Green side does give you a lot more freedom to practice medicine. Loved it.

+anthony danger if you stay in its good field to start for medical. If you plan on getting out because you dont like the navy I would suggest getting a "C" school to become a technician. this will make you marketable in the civilian world until you get your bachelors, or masters in a higher level of healthcare.

I was in the Corps (Infantry) for 7 years. Much respect for the Doc (Corpsman). I had some characters in my units, but I never had a slacker. Very professional and dedicated individuals. God Bless the Corpsman
I was a corpsman, back during the Vietnam War. I would say it was the defining experience of my life.
After A School at Great Lakes, graduated in May, '62, I went to the Naval Hospital Jacksonville, FL, and worked on the Intensive Care/Recovery Ward for a year. The experience was invaluable for spending two years on an LSD. I left the navy as an HM2 in 1965.

I enjoyed this as my father was a career HM, retiring as a Chief after WWII, Korea and Vietnam deployments on both green and blue sides.. The pictures of him on his 2 tours with his Vietnam Marine Infantry detachment were really a stark reality of what he saw in this role. Pictures on the USS Wasp/Hornet as a pharmacist mate showed the boring monotony

This actually answered a lot of my questions about becoming a Corpsman. I'm thinking about speaking to a recruiter within the next few months. I'm 25 though now, and I hear that's dangerously close to a cut off limit. Someone told me all I have to do is sign a waver of some kind? I've been an EMT for 3 years and becoming a Corpsman is something I wanted to do and something I've regretted not becoming sooner for the exact same reasons listed above, about having more liberty with medical intervention.

Who told you that you are close to the age-limit cutoff? In the Marines the cut-off is 28. That might have something to do with it. Have you spoken with a recruiter yet? I have but I'm waiting until I have more progress to report back to him with because of various minor medical issues and because I'm enrolled for classes this fall.
I turned 29 in Corps School. I worked with a woman who turned 40 as an E3. You're good dude. I deployed at 33 to Afghanistan.

I am a HMC retired now for just over 23 years. As I listen to these young men talking about what a corpsman can do I have to chuckle a bit. One can or was able to do pretty much what one wanted in the Navy from which I retired. For example I know a man who served on independent duty on subs & destroyers he was a biomedical repair tech, served with the Marine Corps and was a Master Training Specialist. While serving on sub and destroyer tenders the doctors allowed him to do any procedure he felt comfortable performing and willingly trained him in those he wanted to learn. I do not know what has happened recently but when I entered the Navy in 1956 being a Corpsman was nothing except constant opportunity and excitement unless one chose to sit back and do nothing.

I know a guy who went from SARC to Marsoc, to Delta Force. He was a whole other breed of man altogether, they don't make em like that anymore.

+Az Alcantara right now it isn't. not much war going on and marines are trained to do one thing and that's to shoot/fight shit. When they're not doing that it isn't as much fun. Green side it will be guaranteed you'll live in the barracks where as blue side you could probably live out in town. He's a little biased because he was in when iraq and afghan were going on so he got the meat and potatoes of being a doc.

Green side orders are pretty easy to get out of A school. Sea/shore rotation is more on the shoreduty side which varies if you have an NEC. these changed recently so my information would be out of date on this. Typical day as an HM REALLY depends on where you work. If you work in a clinic at family practice it could be just opening the clinic, making appointments, doing vital signs with patients. If youre green side you can expect training in the field for extended periods of time. Each day you will run sick call and take care of anyone that is sick. You'll ensure immunizations, physicials and all medical needs are up to date to ensure everyone is deployable.

There is a saying that goes "you're a sailor first, corpsman second and tech last' when regarding doing combat there is always a possibility if they need a corpsman you can work as a general corpsman even if you have a technical skill, but mind you this is very slim from my experiences and observations. If you are a laboratory technician your daily duties will be in a lab doing blood work, micro, drawing blood, doing QC checks on machines etc. There is not any designated position to be an EMT at every duty station, but working in an ER is a possibility. This cannot be confirmed 100% as you might work on a ward/floor with a nurse doing other medical skills. To be honest deploying and being part of a marine unit are probably the best and most critical when it comes to performing emergency medicine. The marines respect the hell out of you and are going to protect you at all cost. This is because you have the knowledge and kills to keep them alive even though they will have learned basic firs aid skills from you during drills and pre-deployment exercises. I was in the Navy from September 2000 to September 2008 as a Corpsman. My civilian job is an EMT in the Detroit Metro area. I totally miss the Navy and my job as a Corpsman. I refuse to say that I was a Corpsman because honestly once a Corpsman always a Corpsman. My biggest regret was not doing greenside 8404.

+jigga stuart they ship everything back home anyway. bring as little as possible. Phone/charger, wallet, and clothes on your back. you pay to ship it back so it will save you money in the end. only suggestion is have your family bring the phone, computer etc to boot camp for when you're in A school

+Doomtrigger Not always. I've met many people in the Navy who have degrees who are not Officers. In fact, it's becoming almost a requirement once you make E-6 that if you want to make Chief you need to have a degree, because it's very competitive. I've known several Corpsmen who were Nurses on the outside and one who was a PA - they were Naval Reservists who didn't want to be Officers. *shrug*. Excellent, hard working Corpsmen, though!

So I've been watching your videos religiously and love them, but I am curious about the differences between joining enlisted and as an officer. I know you've touched on the differences before, but would you be able to do a video on OCS or life as an officer? I'm definitely joining the navy when I graduate college next year, but I'm having trouble finding information about officers other than what I've found on the navy's website. Can you specify Green or Blue in your enlistment contract?
No. If your recruiter tells you otherwise, they're lying. You CAN try to get orders to "pipeline" into special programs, but as far as I know, your enlistment contract will only guarantee "0000" NEC.
ssgcmwatsonusa no, you go in as a hospital corpsman quad zero 0000, after corps school, you can choose if they allow you to go green side where you will go through a marine simulated training that includes field medicine. if you past the training, you will be considered 8404 corpsman.. this will show that you are train and capable to deploy with marine unit. of course there are more extensive training, but this is just the basic FYI.

+rarufuesukara you can go "green side" but you will always be in a dental setting. They have dental battalions on green side where it will be a clinic for those marines. If I could give a suggestion I would se if you could be a regular HM without the dental NEC unless you just LOVEEEEE dental work.

+Marquise Chavez As a Hospital Corpsman in A school you have to score a certain percentage to be eligible. These NEC's can be picked while leaving A school. I did pharmacy technician and then only did that. Fair warning to have a few types of technician fields you would want to work. They normally have the less desirable technician fields out of A school though. With surgical, orthopedic, pharmacy and psych techs being pretty easy to get out of A school.

At MEPS I wanted to be a Seabee like my dad, but I was given HM as my rate (my second choice). There's probably a lot I still don't know about. What kind of questions should I be asking?
How hard is it to get Corpsman now? Since it’s overmanned, is it still possible for someone enlisting to get Corpsman? Or like is there is no chance. My Recruiter said “As long as you score 50 or higher on the ASVAB, you qualify.” I’m aiming for 70, I scored 88 in high school but that was 3 years ago.

Greenside refers to FMF Corpsman. FMF work with Marines, they are basically Marine Corps combat medics. Blueside refers to hospital corpsman, hospital corpsman will work in hospitals, docs on ships etc.

They didn't earn the title of Marine at Parris Island or San Diego. They don't have an EGA on their cover, their name tape says "U.S. Navy" and the can't wear dress blues.
gotbricks ye no, green side corpsman don't consider themselves Marines because they are not Marines, but they go through similar marine bootcamp which include field medicine. they can wear marine uniform when on green side (marine regs), they are not allowed to wear their dress uniform though. if they want to be considered Marines then join the marines.

I got 66 and with the scores of all the categories I qualify for more than 3/4's of the jobs in the navy

+Dohb0i It depends on what is going on in the world, and it can also depend on whether you're female or male. I know at one point, all male HM graduates were being sent straight to 8404 school (the NEC for a Field Medical Corpsman with the Marines.) There was just a huge need since we were involved in two wars, and they only keep people deployed for a certain time frame. At other times, you might have a difficult time getting that NEC, because there may be too many people -statistically- holding it. It's all a numbers game. One thing you will hear a lot is "Needs of the Navy". If they need it, you've got a shot. If they don't currently need it... you will need to wait, or find something else you want to train as that they do need.
Should I go green side or blue side... I want to become a seal so I was thinking about FMF before I apply for bud/s. I'm 17 and need lasik. And my doctor said I might have to wait till I'm 21 to get lasik
If you plan on joining the SEALs later on, I would go green side because it would benefit your physical ability and mind since you are being trained to work and be with the Marines, so when you sign up for buds you will have some sort of a prepared body to go beyond the limits. Not saying you can't get fit on blue side, but physical fitness is more oriented in green side since you have to keep up with Marines and be with them wherever they go. Dan Walsh talk to a recruiter about lasiks before you do anything! Often you cannot join if u get lasiks (you get eye surgery in the military similar to lasiks)

You're probably there now. If you haven't figured it out yet, stay away from MedBn. Go TAD somewhere else. Try to get over to one of the CLBs so you can deploy with one of the MEUs

You can go greenside no matter what NEC you get. I was an 8752 Lab Tech and they even went greenside. Don't let all the greenside talk make you think you will be in the field the whole time. I have had good buddies get orders to a ship and absolutely love it.

I know you weren't one, but maybe you could ask him for me. Do you know if there were any special requirements for FMF/green side? My eyesight kindof screwed me over for everything in aviation at meps but i would love to work in the field on greenside if I could.
i suggest going to a marine recruiter and asking him down right what will be expected of you (it's what i did)...if what he tells you will not scare you, then you need to pass the asvab, complete navy boot-camp and corpsmen school, and after that go to FMSS ( school designed to train you, to meet marine physical and mental standards).
I have to be honest, when you are with marines, you do what they do. From playing spades in the barracks to bleeding in the desert...you will be a marine! If you have doubts about being able to hang with marines, and do not respect what they are, don't even bother. But if you have what it takes and impress them, marines will love and give you shit like a brother.
Start physical training before you get in. Marines respect a smart corpsman but even more if they can keep up or even outdo marines.

Your eye sight will not affect you. I am graduating from FMF school in a week and a half, and we have a guy in my platoon who has glasses that make his eyes look like bug eyes. like ×10 enhancement. He's practically blind. Yet, he was still sent here, and has done great. Just meet physical requirements, and you'll do great. (:
NEED HELP!!! Currently trying to enlist in the Navy as a corpsman and my recruiter keeps saying there might not be any HM spots available. I know this is not true because A: Everyone I spoke to (mainly retired Marines, Navy) told me this is false, and B: They're trying to push me into other fields (I told them I'm adamant about not doing anything else other than HM). I've already taken my ASVAB and trying to get a physical done at MEPS (original date pushed back, recruiter said they were full, etc. etc.) My questions: 1- Going to speak to another recruiter in my area, is this a good idea? If so, what should I tell them/NOT tell them? 2- What is the likelihood I'll get a HM slot? I'd really appreciate any input, thank you :)

I got a 90. They've been trying to push me into another job since day 1. I'm pretty adamant about not doing anything else, and they know it. One recruiter told me about "flipping" her recruits after they've signed on. For ex. if HM isn't available when I go to MEPS she advised me to sign for another job while they call every few days until the slot I want opens up, possibly 3 months. This kinda sounds like a load of crap to me, I just don't trust it 100%. But she ensured me if her recruits don't get the job they want they don't go to basic. What are your thoughts?

+T MED I was an NREMT-P with years of field experience before I went through A school... slept through it. Had liberty every night because I was in the top 5% of the class. A school from Nov. 87 through Feb. 88 @ the 'old' Balboa Hospital, San Diego., then went to Pensacola for Aviation Med / Aerospace Physiology. FMF due to needs of the Navy, go figure.

Minimum enlistment is five years since the whole first year will probably be boot+A school+FMTB or C school

It's a possibility but it doesn't always happen. Needs of the Navy. If you do well in school you can get to pick your orders depending on what's available.

Nope, either an officer and become nurse, doctor or physician assistant or an enlisted person and become a corpsman. Oh yes, you can become an MSC officer and work "admin".

Hello, i am 21 currently in nursing school. I want to become a corps men or a medic in the army. Any advice? Should I wait till I finish nursing school??
Fuck yes. Get that money.
I mean... if you're already half-way through your schooling, why let it go to waste? (BTW it's spelled corpsman [no biggie]). Well talk to your recruiter but a base-level corpsman or medic is only EMT certified: however with your RN certification, that could possibly bump you up rank, and can also land you a much better hospital job. (i.e., military RN equivalent). Also keep in mind that once you have your bachelor's degree, you can just sign up for Officer Candidate School in any of the branches and when you graduate you will be a 2nd-Lieutenant (or equivalent).
Finish your degree program, and become an RN, use that to become an officer in the nursing corps of one of the branches or even use it to negotiate for a chance at med school officer programs.
Go on navy or army website they have options for u in nursing school

Correct. Do EVERYTHING your Marines do but better. Remember on humps, during breaks Q3-5 miles ir si, marines sit down abd rest, Doc gies ip and down the line treating sprains, strains, blusters, evaluating all marines for heat / weather related injuries heat exhaustion, stroke etc. By the time you're done the the Gunny yells out "Saddle up"
