- In this video, I demonstrate VSL's Synchron Prime using Dorico and VSL's custom Dorico playback template. I use examples from some of my previous videos (Piano to Strings, Brass, Winds, etc...), and what you're hearing in this video is unprocessed, straight out of Dorico.

Thanks a lot Alex for this generous demonstration of VSL Synchron Prime Edition... I must say that this VSL library sounds nice out of the box... In some of the extracts I have found that some dynamics didn't work that well, mostly because of the way they are written. I have found that when you write for example < > or p< >pp without specifying a dynamic marking in between the hairpins or before and after, Dorico, Sibelius, Finale, etc. don't tend to interpret this accurately, and it is understandable because they do not have anything to either crescendo to or dimunendo from. Normally in those situations I tend to add a dynamic marking and then, if I don't like to see it in the score, I simply hide it away which is very easy to do in Dorico and other software... This way I have found that the playback interpretation is much more accurate. In any case great musical extracts! Best regards, MaxT

Nice video. I hope other libraries will find ways to work inside Dorico. I tried to create custom articulations for the Berlin instruments in Dorico but abandoned that project because there were too many articulations to account for. Maybe I’ll try again for libraries with fewer articulations like CSS.
I think you can download CSS / Dorico templates from the Dorico / Steinberg forum!
I have VSL special edition volume 1 and synchrony prime edition and they complement each other really well. I haven't tried them on Dorico because I'm a Sibelius user, but after watching your video I am a little curious to try dorico and use my VSL libraries.

Amazing demonstration, Alex! Thanks for all the effort you put into making this. I’m quite surprised by how good this sounds out of the box. Certainly a great improvement over NotePerformer. But considering that NP 4 is around the corner I might wait for that. How do you find it performs in terms of loading time and CPU use?
Thanks, Karl. Yes, I'm excited to see what NP 4 sounds like. Loading times for my PC are fast, and if I ran the samples in VEP I could probably get it all to work even more efficiently.

The trumpets in this library are a pleasant surprise. The horns actually sound more synthetic to me but the low brass sound pretty decent although as you pointed out a little lower volume than the rest of the brass. But your low brass/solo horn example sounds pretty good. In the full orchestra example I don't hear the harp unless everything else is very soft. Overall I am surprised by how it sounds.
Yeah, I agree about the horns. Trumpets sound great, which is somewhat rare in these kinds of libraries! I also didn't do any balancing myself, so I made no effort to bring out the harp, or to lower the dynamics of strings during divisi moments. Ultimately, I think I'd need to go into Dorico's CC data and make adjustments if I wanted more control.
@@AlexHeppelmann How did you find load times with all those instances of Synchron player?
@@winknotes no problem for me. Synchron manages ram usage really well, so think when I started the Dorico file, only about 4 or 5 gb of ram were loaded
Hey Alex, this is a good video. I use Dorico also and sometimes the little mixer in Dorico gets out of wack. Maybe that is why you get some imbalances

Nice! The sound is pretty good, but not so good that I am going to run out and drop $600 on that library. I so wish that there were a similar template for the OT stuff.

@@AlexHeppelmann if you could make good expression maps of the OT mains, you could sell them. I’d stand in line to buy them.
My opinion,...and I think that all of us who compose through a score editor,...and trying to make the composition sound, with a respectable library, ends up being a headache and huge times, and in the end one gives up and continues using the noteperformer, and the commercial trap is, and years ago, in the pro-commercial disinterest,... and let's say no, a hand on the heart,... if we had an intelligently integrated library, of the Higher sound and timbre quality, we would save ourselves a lot of money and time,,, and the government of bookstores ends forever,... what arrangement is there?, or isn't there? ...between the creators of libraries and the creators of score editors ??.............?

That's fair! Noteperformer certainly has more articulations and is more flexible.
