  • With Autumn fast approaching we are starting to look forward to what can be one of the most productive times of the year. The fish will be looking for food in ready for the winter months. Moving the patterns high and fast can get a great response from the fish. And scaling things down can make a difference when presenting to those resident fish. As always we have covered the video with tips. It would be great if you were to Subscribe. Give us a thumbs up, or even comment us. We reply to all comments. Hope you enjoy the video. Take care. Shaun.

      It is a bit different isn't it. We always remember these days. As much for the weather. We would never turn a trip down, even if it was a hurricane. These fair weather fishermen don't know what they are missing.

  • @pauljohnsontwonoviceangler6170

    Enjoyed that Shaun. The fly obviously works. It was great to see how you succeeded in those difficult conditions. We struggle with high winds but keep the flies to a single unweighted fly and the leader short. You explained you do something similar.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks Paul, hope you are both keeping well. The fly seems to do well at the moment, but as you know it can work one day and fail for the rest. So far it has done OK. It has pulled fish on each trip so far. For sure keeping the tippet within a manageable length is going to be the safest way. And when your in these winds presentation on the surface is not a problem. Take care mate. And thanks again for the comment. Shaun.

      Thanks so much mate. We are looking at covering some new waters over the next few months. Been very difficult due to weather conditions, a lot of waters closed or fishing being very poor due to heat. We have been very lucky at Hayscastle. This is down to the depth of water and its location. Our biggest problem is weed in the shallower areas. As this is a very established water, this is an issue that will become more of a problem with time. But keep a look out as we are looking to cover a few wild waters before end of season. These I am really looking forward to. Take care mate, and thanks. Shaun.

      @@shaunfishes101 yes this summer has been tough going. One plus for the cooler weather should be the fishing will improve. I tried a new fishery last month not far from me. Dare Valley Trout fishery. It’s a specimen fishery but they now offer catch and release. £35 I think for 10 fish limit. Nice place. Full of big fish, but I only managed to catch the 3 smallest in the reservoir around 3lb. 🙈. Would recommend it though.

      @@9gazla9 I have been watching it. Also see they are starting a tag fish jar. Could be interesting as you now have 10 chances of catching it. Big fish ain't my thing. And on a c/r I think you could be pushing your luck. At Hayscastle we see how many fish die from bad handling. And these fish range 2 to 4lb. I did net a cracker of around 6lb a few weeks ago. I spent at least 10min with the fish before I was happy to release. How many people will do that. We may give this water a go. If we do I will give you a shout.

      Bugger that. That's too hot for me. We were on the water today, and that was hot enough for me. The fishing was as you could imagine, really difficult. Four of us on the water. Two of the boys blanked, but did get a few knocks. Steve was top rod with 5. Most was on his fancy lure. I managed 4 and lost one. Buzzer and my squirrel. Ye I have had some great fishing in the shitty weather. You will have to let me know when your planning to come down. At the moment I would say stay home. The waters are cooling, but not as much as we would think. Oh me and the boys spotted some really big fish today. So why do all the best fish feed on Caenis. We actually love these conditions. If we think back to our fishing, the one thing that stands out most is the conditions. So the rougher the better. I have done big storms, and just holding your rod out makes your arm ache. And that is from the wind pushing the rod. A lot of people will never experience what we do. Casting in these conditions takes a good bit of time to master. Thanks for the comment mate. Oh I am loving your trout fishing. And the locations are amazing. I would love to be there. You are lucky. That is great to hear this. But there's always a good chance if they work here at Hayscastle they will work in most places. Hayscastle is renowned for being a difficult water. When watching the videos you will notice how few people are on the bank. The catchment is small mind. But all this together means stock only goes in about once a month. Which means we will be fishing resident fish for most of the time. Oh plus the quality of water, which puts people off. Its nice to have a bit of tint when presentation is not so good. But we love it just as is. We learn more on these waters. Tying flies as well as fishing. Thanks for the comment and your support mate. Shaun.

      Fished again today. 5 others on the water and the best they done was one fish between them all. I ended up with eleven. Small nymphs in the morning fast and high. Dries after that. Then buzzers when it got tricky. Straight line of course, and fished with a slow retrieve to keep them about 6' or so. I am going to see if I can take time out from fishing. Two weeks. Might see if I can get sponsored. But if I fail I will have to give all the money back. So the chances are the money will go back. Take care mate. Shaun.

As we were setting up and pulling all the gear from Justin's boot I soon found out I had forgotten some of the camera gear. I did say to Justin that I would not bother with any camera. The weather conditions may well improve bye the time you get here. However like for a lot of waters around the country, the spell of unsettled weather has not had much effect on water temperatures. So at a guess the temps are going to be a bit higher for the time of year. Not so good for fishing, even at Hayscastle. Don't worry about flies. • @shaunfishes101

      We will often fish up to 20'. In these conditions with an unweighted fly we could get away with anything between 10' and 15'. Weighted fly down to 10'. But in conditions like in this video. With swirling winds. You would be pushing your luck with too much tippet and a weighted fly. I have been unlucky before. Not having the control in the air, and the beaded fly hits the rod. Needed a new rod tip. There is no set length of tippet, only a guide. And every body will be different depending on tippet strength and casting ability. Its more down to trail and error. Oh you have mentioned both tippet and leader. 20' is tippet and leader combined. And these measurements are again a guide. We never actually measure them. Thanks for watching and the comment. Shaun.

    Hi Shaun, enjoyed the video as usual, what a day for lousy weather. You did well catching anything. I went to loynton fishery on Wednesday,weather was warm and mixed cloudy and sunny. I threw everything I could think of at them from 16s floating fly to deep down with nymphs and lures. Even tried white wormmy but not a knock. I think they stopped stocking as I was told I could take 1 fish no charge, as they where trying to reduce the fish that had been in a while. It’s always difficult catching those . £25 for sporting ticket, and £5 extra per fish taken. It’s a nice water, but the lakes are quite small. I prefer Ellerdine, but there is a possibility that the adjoining farm will install large chicken sheds which possibly could pollute the lakes, and with the roads only being single track, meeting a wagon coming the opposite direction isn’t very appealing. Anyway, tight lines, and looking forward to the next video. Take care

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Honestly mate we enjoy this sort of weather. Its the challenge. This water sounds like a great challenge. Being small does not help, and if the water is popular those fish could be line shy. That can put fish off. Plus the fact they have probably seen every thing thrown in. When it gets really tricky I would stick with the buzzers. Straight line, and about 15' of tippet so you can check the depths. Its slow fishing to start while you check where the fish are at. But starting from the top. I would cast out allow to drop a bit. Then a steady retrieve to maintain the depth you are checking. Do this in a few areas several times. Nothing go deeper and do the same again. If the water you are at is not so deep, this can be done a lot quicker. But the retrieve needs to be smooth and keep contact with the buzzers at all times. I hope this chicken thing does not happen. Ellerdine is a great water and is popular. Keep me posted on your trips to Ellerdine. Justin, may be Steve and myself are looking at coming up soon. Take care mate and hope your next session is going to be fruitful, or fishful. Shaun.

    Wondering your opinion on reels notice you have a really nice one but you never seem to use it it's a bobbin for holding the fly line here in the US were instructed to put the fish on the real as quickly as possible which means sucking up all that excess line onto the real that's what it's for you pay all that money for a nice reel

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Its a bad habit picked up during comp times. During a competition we fish smaller fish and the idea is to get them in as quick as poss. Get the line back in the water asap. If we were to use the reel we would spend far too much time reeling and pulling off again. When on the rivers in the past, it was always on the reel. On the still waters the reel is used when we have a real hard fighting fish or sometimes the bigger fish. And I am the first to use the reel in these situations. As it does show through some of the videos, and I even explain the purpose of drag. But its a great habit to use the reel. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

      @shaunfishes101  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I actually enjoy these conditions. It's the challenge. Ye the pattern is unweighted. This is due to the fish having an eye towards the surface. At this time of year they are switched on to food being carried on the wind and aquatic life darting above them. If the pattern was weighted there's a good chance we could end up below the fish. Better to be above than below. Oh less in the tail. This gives it more movement when fished slow, or even when static the tail will move nicely. We will fish this pattern for another month or so, and who knows it could be good enough to have a tying video. We will see. Thanks for the comment Andrew. Take care mate. Shaun.
