    Keep in mind that this talk was originally held before the release of Undertale. At the time, the only games that set out to really push back against these problems were obscure and aimed at niche audiences; meanwhile, triple-A games were, as they are now, very safe affairs that made very shallow explorations into contentious territory. There was no big breakout game that tackled these issues in a way that legitimately shook the status quo.

      Mostly the "shock value" is about the banalization of violence in videogames. Undertale does this very wonderfully through it's narrative (which by itself is another point that makes the game shine a great fucking deal). I'll avoid any more spoilery comments, it truly is worth buying and playing.

      By the way, I said "shook", not "shock".

      I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter!! oh, but I mean, Nier at the time was a AAA game :/, (yes, I understand it barely chipped 500,000 copies, and that it was VERY niche)

      +FF18Cloud You can chalk that one up to my own ignorance, then. :/ I've heard of Nier, but I know nothing about it beyond the name.

      Benjamin McLean Well, you should watch some playthrough of it than. Although a lot of the value is lost when it's not actually played you get to see the things people talk about.

    I'm making a game that has a morality system, good and evil, but you are never actually told if what you do is evil or good, people in the game world perceive it that way. There is no meter. What does everyone think about this?

    That moment when you listen to a good talk and some people in the comments go nuts cause the speaker once said something that they didn't like

  • @srazzz
    @srazzz Před 7 lety +38

    Some of the comments in here are just utterly idiotic. Criticizing without actually watching the video, being insulted by a video being about narrative, throwing feminist and leftist and SJW tags as if they're relevant to what the video was actually about. I have no interest in the opinions of people who throw such lazy tags around.

    • @srazzz
      @srazzz Před 7 lety +14

      You said she was preaching 'leftist political morality' below. And now when people point out there was nothing of the sort it's reduced to 'well she has some opinions I found on google I don't like'. You didn't care what was in the video, you just needed a reason to criticize her and invented one.

    • @srazzz
      @srazzz Před 7 lety +4

      And where is this bad reputation? Feel free to point me in the right direction. And as I said, I have no interest in lazy, useless tags like SJW. They do nothing but allow people to ignore a giant chunk of ideas and issues without any critical thought.

    Why is it every time a talk is given by a woman on this channel, there are tons of dislikes? The sexism is here is crazy.

      Maybe because the talk sucked? Did you consider that? Correlation isn't causation.

      I didn't see this point, at all... She didn't make a point about she's a girl, just that she is a student, and that's all.
      Why is would be morality by saying that more path than good and evil, and less transparency of the game permit to give a more realistic, and so, immersive experience? That what I got from this talk.
      I'm surely missing something, so I'm curious about what you understood from this conference.

      Benjamin - You dislike a video titled "Morality in Narrative Design" for not being interesting for you? Why did you watch it at all? What did you expect?

    • @andrecoelho8001
      @andrecoelho8001 Před 7 lety +8

      It's something called GamerGate (although not at it's peak, it proves itself still being a thing a lot here). It's strange though, usually when this kind of thing (namely any woman talking anything at all) is uploaded they turn off the comments to avoid useless discussion.
      Anyway, I suggest doing some reading about it. It's "interesting", to say the very least.

    • @MaciejGajzlerowicz
      @MaciejGajzlerowicz Před 7 lety +14

      +Benjamin McLean - Please mark the specific timer when she proves that she is "the sort of feminist (...)". From my perspective her speech is very to the point and focuses on the topic. Where does she prove any kind of political agenda?
      Or maybe you did just assume something cause she is a woman?
