3D Toon Rendering in 'Hi-Fi RUSH'

  • 'Hi-Fi RUSH' is a 60fps rhythm action game rendered in a stylish 3D toon art style using a customized Unreal Engine 4. In 'Hi-Fi RUSH', the developers at Tango Gameworks used toon shading for the entire world, both character and environment, while providing modern 3D graphics features, all at 60fps at native resolution. In this GDC 2024 talk, learn about the development of a deferred toon renderer developed for toon shading a 3D world in a 2D way. Various customized UE4 render passes along with added render passes of their own are stylized and combined inside deferred rendered post process volumes.

    Hi-Fi Rush is one of the best games made and one of my all time favorites. A real master piece. Thoroughly enjoy it. Thanks Tango Gameworks! It was a crime how they were treated and I really hope the team gets together and goes independent to continue making awesome games for the future.

      NO body cared when they released evil within and now when they are dissolved, out of no where people are now feeling sad. By god's grace stop buying cod and ac every year and focus on good games like alan wake or other single player titles.

    I think this face toon shading approach is really interesting. It's cool that simplifying shading to only the horizontal direction allows one to use a simple grayscale texture.

      It's the same one being used in mihoyo games, from my research, it seems the only efficient way to properly toon shade faces, it's literally being used everywhere nowadays (previously normal editing was used)

    So cool seeing the challenges that comes with art direction that may look simple at first glance. Really shows that you can't just cell shade and call it a day, you have to commit to the art direction you want to go in and make it the best you can within your ability.
    Sure would've been nice if talent like that stayed around, wouldn't it?

    really interesting! request for the GDC video editors if i may.. i really wish you'd make the presentation screen fill the screen and use a picture in picture for the speaker - there's so much real estate lost in this format and it would help see the details of whats being spoken about 🙏

    Hi-Fi rush came out of nowhere and was a masterpiece. RIP Tango. I am sure Phil and the other people earning millions per year already forgot they existed. Also love that Matt Booty (Head of Xbox Game Studios) said after the layoffs that "Microsoft needs more games like Hi-Fi Rush".

    The title of this talk doesn't indicate the level of detail they go into. It was very technical, but skillfully presented to be understandable by someone with basic knowledge of the rendering pipeline.

    I hope there’s more videos showing how much work every development lead who worked on Hi-Fi Rush. Because these presentations showed that they cared about what game they were making and that they had the talent to make such an amazing game. When I look back on Matt Booty’s comment on the change of leadership, it is clear as day that he was trying to shift blame on Shinji Mikami because if I was in his position and actually looked at Tango’s development of Hi-Fi Rush, I would’ve never said anything as stupid as that. It is very unlikely that he, nor Phil Spencer or any other Xbox executive, actually give a detailed look into Tango Gameworks because if they did they would’ve realized how much talent could’ve been used to not only boost their brand but allow Xbox to be more competitive in Japan.
    Nope, they instead had their minds set on closing down this studio likely well over a year in advance and waste all that talent that they’ll likely never have again for a long time. But hey guys, the gaming industry is just so hard to make money in nowadays…🥺
    Meanwhile, Nintendo and Capcom still making bank on games despite the fact they are primarily game companies.

      ​@@oo--7714 Microsoft could have. Evil Within supposedly selling poorly is not really a factor in the closure if that was before Microsoft bought them. Hi-Fi Rush came along, became a popular award-winner title and Microsoft shot them down in one of the most short sighted decisions in gaming history.

      ​@@oo--7714 Of course, it is expected that Microsoft would tread lightly around Tango given their sales history, we might even assume the fact that the studio wasn't shut down right after the Bethesda purchase was because Hi-Fi Rush was already far in development, they might have allowed the release expecting to scrap some revenue before shutting the studio down. Again, Tango turned the tables on Microsoft with Hi-Fi Rush, a commercially successful game, exceeded expectations and earned Microsoft reputation and prestige. The studio closing down is evidence of short sighted decisions based on stakeholders short term interests (as well as short term expenses recovery, the amount Microsoft spend on Activision needs no mention), to state that a studio is doomed after a critical success of this magnitude would simply not ring true in any other industry. It is clear something needs to change in the priorities of these big publishers. Tango Gameworks fell victim to circumstances completely outside of their control and their fate was sealed by corporate biggering.

      Their 2 previous games which were aaa sized flopped hard. Extremely hard. Hifi rush wasn't a massive success, on Xbox or PlayStation, where it dropped relitively quickly. To keep a company that is just sinking money isn't great. Hifi rush was expensive and was made over the course of 5 years. 5.
      If they didn't flop as hard and made games quicker the situation might have been different.
