On a aesthetic note: I love the Spanish music and the picture of a castle during the opening of these videos.

Thank you! That's actually a picture of the walls of Avila at the beginning of each episode. The very walls that Sts. Teresa and John would have known well!

You are helping bring St John of the Cross so much closer & illuminating his brilliance & the beauty of our catholic faith & intimacy with our Lord. Your analogies-filling the Grand Canyon & others-are so clarifying. Thank you! You are in my prayers 🙏🏻

Love the analogy to filling the Grand Canyon with a shovel.
There's been special people in my life with whom I have shared high spiritual moments shall we say, and I thought I could share these high moments with them but I can't. They just can't go there. They're like the person who says. No I'm good with my shovel, as you say. It is a heartbreak not to be able to share this infinite need or desire with the other as you say @ 32:10.
The failing on my part is to keep looking for this `need fulfilment' in these good people and getting sad that I can’t find it there through no-one's fault of course. It is only to be found in God but other people are a more immediate comfort for the senses. The spiritual journey can be a lonely one sometimes
We cling to our natural way of understanding but also loving too I think. Like; long ago I'd rather love my girlfriend than God. I can perceive her with my senses but I can’t perceive a spiritual God with my senses. We might learn along the way that nether ourselves nor the `other’ can fulfil our infinite desire for life. This might be lesson number 1 shall we say.
Lesson number 2 might be to study the life of Christ and the saints and find the evidence for the infinite being himself because only an infinite being can put within us an infinite desire. This is the conclusion of C.S. Lewis reached in his book - `Surprised by Joy'. And so now I know I ought to put my hope in God but how can I? How can I love someone who transcends my nature? By definition I can't know what transcends my nature or it wouldn't transcend my nature and I can’t love someone I can’t know.
I know I should love God but like you say we're incapable of loving God on our own. As you say our wills have to be raised.
The short answer is God must reveal Himself to us which He has done through Jesus Christ.
But faith hope and charity are theological virtues and my understanding is that means they come from God; therefore we must pray for these virtues. We can't do it by ourselves and now it makes sense to me what Jesus meant when He said Without Me you can do nothing. We can do nothing for our relationship with God without Him.
For someone who has tasted God in some form or other this becomes the level or the place or the manner in which we would love the other. But we can't and it's sad.
BTW your cinematographer is excellent. Kudos to them.

Which numbering system is John using when referencing the Psalms (Greek or Hebrew) ... I am reading along in the Collected Works of St. John of the Cross (Kavanaugh & Rodriguez) not the study guide. Thanks.

@ICSPublications Thank you for your response and this excellent series on The Living Flame of Love. This is my introduction to St. John of the Cross. I would like to delve deeper into his spirituality. I presume I should start with The Ascent before The Dark Night...? Outside of the Collected Works of St. John of the Cross, do you recommend any additional resources? Thanks again. God Bless you.
