    This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. I cannot give this movie enough praise.

    I'll never understand why so many reactors think at first that Toothless can't fly well and so was an outcast as well. I mean, did you not see that first part where he was a totally badass dragon that was destroying entire structures with a single plasma blast?

  • @Beeba10

    Answers to your questions/comments made in the video:
    - About their accents: the cast have joked that the kids of Berk did an exchange program for a year or two in North America, which is why they all have American/Canadian accents lol.
    - The teens talking about wanting to get some scarring - it would be a physical display of how brave they are. Vikings are warriors, so to have scarring suggests you've seen combat and lived to tell the tale.
    - Toothless was VERY good at flying before he lost his tail fin; he was knocking down those pillars with his fire, known as plasma blasts, and then quickly flying away.
    - So, a lot of the dragons Hiccup looks at in the Book of Dragons don't get appearances (or at least proper appearances, one or two get little cameos) in the movies; however, they are seen in more detail in the tv show. Pretty sure all of the ones Hiccup looked at were featured in the tv show, actually. The only exceptions are the main dragons in this movie (e.g. Night Fury, Gronckle, Hideous Zippleback) and the Boneknapper Dragon, which was featured in the short movie Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon.
    - I will put info about the tv series and the short movies in a reply to this comment.
    - You're one of the only reactors (or group of reactors) I've seen that realised Toothless drew Hiccup. It was a little . . . abstract, but it was meant to be him XD
    - It isn't just that dragons dislike eels. The tv show reveals why dragons avoid eels so much; without spoiling too much, just in case you want to watch the series at some point, eels make them unwell.
    - Yeah, Astrid's frustration is part jealousy and part confusion/disbelief at how he suddenly got so good while seemingly not even putting the effort in. She's been training for this for YEARS, and seemingly overnight Hiccup is just an expert at "fighting" dragons. I've seen people criticise her for changing her tune just because they went on that romantic flight, but that was only part of it; she finally understood how Hiccup improved so jarringly, she had answers, and her eyes were opened to how dragons truly were.

    • @Beeba10
      @Beeba10 Před rokem +12

      Short movies:
      - Gift of the Night Fury, Book of Dragons, Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon - 3 short movies, all set at some point shortly after movie 1.
      - Dawn of the Dragon Racers - set a few years after movie 1 and a couple years before movie 2.
      - Homecoming - set during movie 3.
      TV series:
      - Riders of Berk - set shortly after movie 1.
      - Defenders of Berk - set directly after Riders, known as season 2 of Riders.
      - Race to the Edge - set during the couple of years before movie 2.
      There are also another couple of series, but they weren't as well received: Rescue Riders, which seems to be a slightly different universe where dragons can talk, it was their attempt to get a younger viewership; and The Nine Realms, which is widely regarded as just a not so great show (I don't personally mind it and have been watching, but I can understand why others dislike it), it's set 1300 years after the events of the original series.
      If you only watch one of these, I strongly recommend at least watching Gift of the Night Fury. a) it's just a nice little movie itself, and b) its events are briefly referenced to in movie 3.

      I haven't watched the show, but it would actually make a lot of sense for dragons to have a hard time eating eels considering their skeletons. In case you didn't know, eel skeletons are basically hundreds of needle-like spines running the length of their backbone. It would rip up anything's stomach.

    Even though it's unlikely, I strongly recommend watching the three TV series before the second movie. It completely fleshes out and and explains everything you need to know, so you don't have to spend the whole second movie going 'wait, what is that' or 'wait, when did that happen'. It is a case where movie and TV continuity are in sync, and makes it one of the best fictional world-building franchises ever.

  • @thedingdongsunshinefuture

    Nice video, it’s always cool to see what ppl think of this movie. I’ve seen it so many times but I just realized something. When Astrid first saw Toothless, she tried to protect Hiccup. They were way out in the woods, she could have let him get killed. If she did, then she could be the one to kill the monstrous nightmare. She may seem annoying from the audience’s perspective but she is a good person. Like you said, she was just mad bc she was putting in a lot of work and to her it seemed like Hiccup was cheating or something.

    • @fractalmuse
      @fractalmuse Před rokem +19

      Nah she only seems annoying to people who completely miss the point of the movie. Dragons aren't harmless innocent little beans, they are *extremely* dangerous (as the rest of the trilogy continues to show) and a giant threat to the Vikings' lives and livelihoods.
      Gobber isn't training the kids for fun, neither are Stoick and crew sailing out to look for the dragons' nest because they have nothing better to do. Astrid isn't training as hard as she is so she can kill the monstrous nightmare like it's just some dumbass graduation ceremony, she is preparing for what would have been a violent conflict lasting her *entire life*. They are training PRECISELY so that they can protect each other the way she tries to protect Hiccup in that scene.
      It's actually really silly how people get so stuck in Hiccup's POV and the thrill of flying a dragon that they somehow completely forget key scenes in the movie like Gobber talking about how he's literally lost limbs to the dragons or the opening scene establishing that they are attacked by dragons so often that they have to keep rebuilding their village. Gobber's disability isn't any less real because he jokes around a lot.

    • @theamazingspooderman2697
      @theamazingspooderman2697 Před rokem +1

      @@fractalmuse but it could be bcz the dragons were trying to defend themselves from the vikings, both parties are at fault

    • @fractalmuse
      @fractalmuse Před rokem +13

      @@theamazingspooderman2697 the dragons weren't trying to defend themselves from the vikings, the dragons were *raiding the Vikings' village, destroying their homes, and carrying off their food*. Granted they were doing all that because of the Red Death, but that doesn't change the effect it's had on the Vikings.
      It's so dumb because the vast majority of people who think Astrid is just being annoying for no reason would be (rightly) terrified if e.g. a hungry bear broke into their house and started rooting around for food. And bears don't even fly or spit fire!

    • @sarcasticat6979
      @sarcasticat6979 Před rokem +3

      People sleep on that Astrid scene tbh. I love thinking about it from her perspective; like, she literally says "Get down!" which we've only heard the Vikings say in reference to Night Furies specifically. We also know she's already read the dragon manual. And we can assume everyone knows what Gobber tells Hiccup: no one has ever met a Night Fury and lived to tell the tale.
      So when Astrid tells Hiccup to run, she very likely assumes she's about to die, because here's this dragon she's never seen before, therefore it MUST be a Night Fury, and no one survives an encounter with those. But she still tries to protect Hiccup because he's weaker, he definitely wouldn't survive a fight, but if she can buy him some time maybe he can get to safety before it starts to chase him as well. All the frustration and annoyance she has with him melts away in an instant, and none of it matters anymore because protecting her fellow Viking is much more important. This is quite literally what she's been training so hard to do, and she doesn't let her personal feelings get in the way of that, even if it means she might die. Astrid ftw

    I will always love this movie. Among the many, many reasons, it has these echoes from one character to another. That shot with Hiccup with his prosthetic leg leaning on Toothless with his wounded tail calls attention to the bond they have now. In the same way, Gobber points out that Hiccup and his dad are both "boar-headed, stubborn vikings." Bringing it all together, the three of them are leaders. They stand up when everyone else is running away. When Astrid says "he's up" and "go" in the final fight, she's not just narrating what's happening. She's saying "look at Hiccup. He's in charge here. He's worthy of your respect." Speaking of Astrid, just think about how badly she wanted to be in charge before and how much it means that she acknowledged and encouraged Hiccup. It's perfect, particularly because she was the only one who could help him in the darkest hour. After Toothless was revealed to the village, Hiccup's social standing was in the negatives again, not to mention his confidence. Astrid was the one to get him back on his feet, and she had to have been the one to convince the rest of the trainees to help, and I love that they made me believe she would after everything else.

    Besides there being 2 more movies (a total of 3);
    there's also multiple short movies (a total of 5) of which 4 happen before the 2nd movie and 1 happens after movie 3.
    And, to top it all off;
    There's also a cannon series of 8 seasons long (total of 118 episodes).
    If you're going to react to all the movies, I also highly recommend to at least watch 2 out of 3 short movies that play before the 2nd movie, before watching the 2nd one.
    The 2 short movies in question being;
    - Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon (16 minute special)
    - Gift of the Night Fury (22 minute special)
    And to at least give the series a try, because it is amazing and even though the 8 seasons play between movie 1 and 2, you won't have to watch the series before watching the 2nd movie or third for that matter.
    The last episode of season 8 DOES end on an event which is a set-up for movie 2, but it isnt needed to understand what's happening in movie 2.
    The series in question being named;
    - Riders of Berk (season 1)
    - Defenders of Berk (season 2)
    - Race to the Edge (season 3 to 8)

    35:10 i say this so genuinely, theres beauty in nature wherever you are, if youre able bodied you can find gorgeous spots in places youd never think with a google search, maybe a car or bus ride, and some walking. and if you get used to just finding a spot and sitting for a while taking it all in youll also find it easier to see the beauty in everyday places

    One of the top reasons that I love this trilogy is that there are real consequences and changes in the character's lives, Hiccup losing a leg in this one, and... uh no spoilers but anyone who's seen the second one knows what happens there. It also shows in how the characters distinctly grow both mentally and physically. We see many of the character become more confident and capable over time. I think that the shows modeled that growth best but it pays off in the movies.

    I don't get why people are annoyed Stoick stopped the fight. Would you let your child walk towards what you consider a vicious animal, without any shield or weapons? People are only coming from the view of Hiccup, if you were watching from Stoick's view the entire time you'd be thinking like him

    a lot of reactors have forced hate to astrid in the first movie like these are children who were taught to kill a dragon or be killed since they're born. you can't expect her to just accept it in 20 mins of the movie lol. there's what you called a "character arc". actually, her accepting the idea of training a dragon was so quick.
