I have the G9 with 12-60 Leica 45-200 and 25 1.7. Shoot all day long and walk miles while hiking so love how light and compact it all is. Find menus easy to navigate and camera easy to use and great to set up with so many custom options. For you I think you’ve made the right choice but too many people dismiss M4/3 without really looking into them. I feel for me and what I use it for it’s amazing but also understand that it’s not right for everyone. As long as you pick what works for you and your happy I don’t think it really matters. Great video again and look forward to more. 👍

Hi Matthew, I have been using the Panasonic G9 since launch. I use mine solely for landscape photography and have hardly done any video with it. I love it, especially since I can leave my tripod behind quite a lot due to the amazing IBIS. I have a few primes like the very cheap but amazingly sharp Olympus 45mm F1.8 and the Panasonic 25mm F1.7. These give plenty of bokeh for my liking. Due to the speed of the camera I can even do handheld 2 stop 5 shot bracket exposures handheld. Thanks for doing this video, hope all is well with you mate 😀

Looking forward to Sundays video. People knock the MFT format for landscape photography but I have been more than happy with it. You have been following me on Instagram for quite a while now #gordondohertyphotography so as you can see the G9 performs really well and the Raw files have lots of flexibility. As you say noise at higher Iso isn't great but I rarely shoot above iso 800, this is only done in low light handheld.

    I recently changed from a Canon 5D MK3 and 4 to a pair of Lumix G9's
My photography has migrated from taking lots of Sports / Action photos to more portraits.
I would lug around my 5D with grip and 120-300 sigma on events and then shoot indoor sports such as Volley ball and basketball with the 70-200 2.8 lens.
I now focus more on sports portraits where a M4/3 camera is more than enough to get an excellent image.
I find hand holding to be extremely simple for long periods of time, and the image quality from the G9 has absolutely impressed me.
I have printed images as large as 20x30 with excellent quality, but the largest prints most want are 8x10's.
I also cover some video which the G9 does an excellent job of.
Some of you may say why not stick with the EOS system and go to a R or R5 camera.
the Camera is not the problem, it's the glass and the new R glass is no lighter.
the Lumix M4/3 glass is half or more than half the weight of full frame glass and the quality is incredible.
Best of luck with everyone and their choices.

The G9 is more than capable for professional use and gives up negligible IQ ti APS-C (or FF for that matter) in most situations. For most applications, unless you pixel peep (a pointless pastime), you’re not going to get results from larger sensor cameras that come close to justifying the increased price and lack of portability. Sure, if your primary job as a photographer is low-light sports, then you’re probably going to have a couple of D5 or 1Dx bodies and huge lenses (that require at least monopods) that cost more than many cars (although your employer’s probably paying or them). If you want a full-range, ergonomically superior, and higher-performance tool that will deliver amazing results almost all of the time, then the G9 is a great choice. I’ll let others comment on video (although most of what I’ve seen is very positive), but if you primarily shoot stills, the G9’s more than up to the task and if you need a lot of reach, there’s just no contest. My Leica 100-400 (200-800 35mm eq) is amazing and would be a fraction of the size, weight, and cost (plus have a much shorter minimum focusing distance-a huge plus) of an equivalent lens for larger format systems, if such a thing even existed…

Both formats are fantastic - we live in a blessed age for great camera choice! I use Olympus for sports and people photography (family stuff) because the Leica 100-400 is amazing and so are the Olympus primes (45 & 75 f1.8). The stabilisation in the E-M1 comes in handy. However, I also love the quality I get from my Fuji, and I use the (now old!) X-T10 for landscape (I resort to a travel tripod when necessary!). I could probably happily settle on one system or the other, but I don't need to yet, so I'll continue to be spoiled for choice for now. Good talking point on this vid Matthew.

I use MFT because of its small size and weight, IBIS, features the camera's offer, and (most importantly) it suits my budget. I have a Lumix G85 which takes great photos and the IBIS can't be beat. I just got an Olympus OMD EM10 MK II because it is even smaller than the Lumix, has wonderful IBIS for video, and I can carry it around in my pocket for when I'm hanging with friends and I just want to have fun taking candid street photos and vids. Plus, and this is huge, Panasonic and Olympus allows you to swap lenses between their 2 systems. All totaled I paid roughly $1,300 for 2 camera bodies and 3 lenses (and the prices on all of these items has come down even more since I bought them). I'm so happy I got away from the clunky FF system. I think APS-C is a fine system, but size matters to me and MFT, with it's smaller form factor, just made photography a more enjoyable experience.

  • @TITAOSTEIN
    @TITAOSTEIN Před 4 lety +7

I love mft especially for Macro, Wildlife and Video! I disagree a little about the disadvantage for video. Or partly disagree. Because it depends on what type of video. I work with mft and APS-C and I have MFT as my first option for video. Exaggerated and frequent Bokeh is a trend at the moment, but it is, in my opinion, a regional and temporary trend / fashion. Very large openings can be disadvantageous in several circumstances, such as interviews, documentaries and situations where you want to give some dimension to the surroundings. It is also very important to point out, so as not to confuse those who are starting in the world of photography, the multiplication factor between mft and FF is 2 x, but only for DoF! The opening, the gain of light, is the same! In that case, an F1.2 lens is an F1.2 lens in any system! What changes is the DoF. And even the DoF is determined by other factors, such as distance to the photographed object and focal length. But these are just small observations. Excellent comparative, very clearly explained and competently filmed. Congratulations for the work!

Hello Matthew, just came across your channel today so that is why my comments can seem late so to speak, subscribed just before this.
I am a MFT user and have little experience of using other formats. It is always amazing how MFT is not worth considering on the part of many because of this or that...and these same people, on you tube, have never tried a MFT camera - and thus have no knowledge to speak from - and just advocate Canola Nikon or Sony like so many others do.
I would like to take issue with something you said in your video. It has been awhile, you might like to rewatch your own words. In your video, despite being wildly enthusiastic about the G9 you still were referring to the Fuji as having "professional features" whereas you were not equating the G9 as being professional. Yes, you said this.
The words we use to describe things reflect our thinking and influence the thinking of others. Let us take the word professional. A profession is a job, what we get paid to do. Good photographers can be professional but they can also be enthusiasts. What equipment you use does not make you a professional. Cameras do not have "professional features" they have a variety of features used by professionals (those who earn money from their photos) amateurs and enthusiasts.
There are professional photographers who use Olympus or Panasonic (MFT) only. They have you tube channels and tell the world about how their business clients are so very satisfied with their work, they are professional photographers using cameras like OMD EM1X or Panasonic G9 or whatever. In fact it is almost insulting to suggest that MFT cameras are not professional or to not describe their features as professional.
Another matter: crop sensors. I would like to suggest that so-called full frame cameras also have cropped sensors. Back in the day, 35mm film was a "cropped" format compared to the medium format and large format film of the day. When the world went digital, clever marketing departments started calling what was up until then small format "full frame" and that sounds good, bigger is better than APS-C or M43...and so right from the start the way some clever marketers put it 'buy a full frame from us....the other cameras are not as good since the others have "cropped sensors".'..... And lots of folks fell for it. And there is a whole generation who is absolutely clueless. How we describe something influences how we see it. Maybe MFT gets a bad deal from the start with the "micro" at the start of the name and not because of the advantages and disadvantages of the system per se?
I will catch up on some more of your videos shortly, if I would add outside my two Lumix cameras and lenses I would probably go for the X-S10 with 2-3 lenses for the situations where my MFT kit struggles...but I am in no hurry to do this, still trying to be a better photographer/videographer with what I have before adding to my modest kit.

    @borispradel1037 Před 4 lety +3

Sorry to disagree, but 1.8 on APS-C or MFT is 1.8 no matter what. It's just the DOF that is different. A 25mm is a 25mm on MFT, APS-C or Full frame, but just cropped because of the sensor size, so it gives you the field of view of a 50mm on MFT. The light gathering capabilities depend on sensor technology and pixel size, so if you have two same-size sensors the lower the pixel number the bigger the pixel size and the better light gathering capabilities if all other variables are equal.
The problem is sensor resolution. To print larger you need more pixels, and as MFT sensors are small in comparison to APS-C and Full Frame, they have to pack 20 megapixels in a small size sensor, reducing its light gathering capabilities but increasing resolution. I have full frame and MFT cameras, I can adapt my Canon F1.4 lenses to my MFT and the 1.4 is an F1.4 on both cameras, however as my MFT is using just the central part of the lens the DOF is completely different and all the objects look closer losing the full frame DOF, but all other variables (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) are the same. It doesn't give out a darker or more grainy image.
So, if you want better low -light capabilities, besides improving sensor technology, you have to increase pixel size and reduce resolution. That's why the Sony A7SII has only 12 MP although it is a full frame camera.

Well not 100% correct. If you crop a Fuji 6000x4000 mp image into a 4:3 ratio image, guess what resolution do you get? 20 megapixels. So the claim that they pack more pixels in a smaller sensor is not accurate. It’s pretty much the same pixel density in both, APSC and Micro 4/3 sensors discussed in this video.

I'd loved the X-H1 inside the G9 BODY, grip is bigger. The body Grip on x-h1 is not so big as most people says, too thin and not so confortable, just the bigger grip on Fuji X lineup. Also G9 got better "Kaizen" support than X-H1 which is crazy :/

As an amateur who restarted photography after a long break, i went with Panasonic G95 due to cost, weight, & size esp with glass. The m/3 systems have the most mature lens selection. Massive. Put a 1.2f prime lens on the G9 and you don't have to bump to 6400. With that, and the latest G9 firmware upgrade, I'd take the Panasonic over the Fuji feature for feature.

I really liked the video, but one detail bothered me a little. The use of the word 'professional'. I don't know if it's a problem with changing languages or not. But at least in Portuguese, the word 'professional' has a broader meaning. What makes something professional or not is what you get out of it. Many people live with different types of photography, and travel photography can become professional in such cases. So, what makes a photograph professional or not? This is very relative! So every care is necessary with the use of this word.

I have both, but I think I am going to sell off my G9 kit and here is why. While the G9 is a great camera, I think the image quality of the X-H1 is better. Looking at the images the X-H1 just seems to produce as more natural look of separation. The G9 produces really sharp images, but in an odd way, this sharpness tends to make the central subject pop so much, they almost appear pasted onto the background. While the X-H1 seems to show more layers of separation.

Unfortunately some misleading info in this video. First, comparing a prime APS-C lense 16mil 1.4 to a M43 Zoom lens 2.8-4mil of course will render different depth of field. There are lots of ways around this e.g. faster lenses or Speedboosters. If, however, max blurred background and max lowlight ultimately is what you are after, then larger sensors than M43 or APS-C would be the way to go. Secondly, it seems you missed the fw 2.0 upgrade for the G9 as this addresses some of the issues you are critisizing. Exposure contriol in 180fps being one of it. Thirdly, there are a range of erros in your descrption, e.g. when you say the aperture of f2.8 -f4 becomes f4 - f8 or when you say the G9’s codec is 150 megabytes. Of course you wanted to say 150 mbits. Not a big issue, but this confirms the overall lack of accuracy in this video. BTW I am shooting M43 aand FF and I am currently also looking at the XT4 as this is a fab camera. So I am not partisan when it comes to these formats. I use the tool that is needed for the specific purpose. Cheers.

I use primes and lightweight zooms and get outstanding video and portability. Then you clearly and smartly explained why you also needed the newer Fuji to compliment the XHI. You really did an amazing job of explaining how you use the two cameras in a team approach!! Most CZcams reviewers don’t give as much original and in depth thinking as you do!! I also love how you do the reviews in such beautiful locations! Locations that you obviously like to work in! I certainly understand and appreciate how monstrously time consuming it is to prepare so much information about so many cameras on a regular basis, film yourself, then edit and post. And then respond to fans, answer their questions comments etc. And oh yes, try to make a living by marketing yourself or your services, in addition to all the other parts of the job. I truly think you have the talent and the drive to bring great content and original thinking to the world wide photographic community!! Since M43 has 1 stop more DOF you can shoot 1 stop wider aperature with M43 than you can with APS-C to get same DOF with same (equivalent) focal length. So that means no more noise for an equal DOF and exposure. So why then do I hear people saying M43 has more noise at a given ISO? You shouldn't be using the same ISO for M43 that you do for APS-C for same subject matter and lighting. You should be using one stop lower ISO omcthe M43. So the relevant question is how does noise compare when M43 at 1600 ISO and APS-C at 3200 ISO?

    • @jeniyo9682

Ibis only works for stills. Now try using ibis with moving people in low light. If I would just shoot statics that doesn't move to gather more light, I can just use my smartphone for that with computational features (lesser quality but it still can be acceptable at social media uploads). It's not about being equivalent or such, it's about the situation you'll be using it for. As someone coming from m43 low light is just the second problem, main problem is the messy highlights and the poor dynamic range. As I grow more with photography I find myself shooting moving subjects in low light.

@@jeniyo9682I wasn't talking about IBIS, shutter speed, or motion blur, but since you mention those topics in an incorrect way in relation to my earlier point, I will now address those other topics as well.
M43 does offer the best IBIS due to being able to move the smaller sensor farther, but that is irrelevant to what I was saying earlier.
Relating my original point to motion blur (since you brought that up)...
Because M43 gives same DOF (with equivalent focal length lens) at 1600 ISO that APS-C gives at 3200 ISO...
The following settings give same exposure and same DOF.
      M43 at 1600 ISO, Aperture F2, Shutter 1/60
      APS-C at 3200 ISO, Aperture F2.8, Shutter 1/60
FF at 6400 ISO, Aperture F4, Shutter 1/60
      M43 at 1600 ISO, Aperture F1.4, Shutter 1/125
      APS-C at 3200 ISO, Aperture F2, Shutter 1/125
FF at 6400 ISO, Aperture F4, Shutter 1/125
Same exposure, DOF, and shutter speed in each. So same motion blur (or not) in each.
Which is why I think a valid noise (and dynamic range) comparison is with M43 at 1600, APS-C at 3200, and FF ar 6400 ISO.
I think M43 has very little if any low light disadvantage for moving subjects if you understand it. I also think M43 has an advantage for stationary low light subjects due to M43 having superior IBIS.
