Netherlands ! The legendary team of the 1970s. It is a country that played in the finals in 1974 and 1978 World Cups but lost dramatically, and guided world football with its new game concept "total football". Despite his success in the world cups, he had no success in the European championships yet, and the first hurdle to achieve this was to pass the qualifiers. This video shows the efforts of the Netherlands to join Euro 1980.

Great to see these matches. That last win for Holland in East Germany prevented Poland making the finals. Poland took 3 points off Holland.

East Germany would have qualified by 1 point from Poland if they had beaten the Dutch.

In this group were 3 competent teams, like in the one with France, Czechoslovakia, Sweden. Then there was the group with Belgium, Austria, Scotland, Portugal.

This was the most equal and exciting group!

Thijssen, Tahamata, Geels, Kist, Mühren, Metgod and Krol, Rene van der Kerkhof, Rep. Willy van der Kerkhof still in their best years. Not a bad team. A year before almost world champion

The Germans offered the Poles "healthy food" before the match in Leipzig. For political reasons, the matter was silenced, but in the WC1982 qualifiers, Poles went to DDR with their own cook and their own food products.

Сборная ГДР была неплохой командой. Но, чтобы добиться чего нибудь на мировой футбольной арене восточным немцам нехватало совсем немногого...

Holland in the 80s was packed with great players, perhaps they hadn't really great individuals but how they missed two World Cups when other mediocre teams made it is beyond me

    • @Resenbrink

This team wasn't "packed with great players" by any means.....more like ordinary players. In a few years time Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard and Koeman turned up - but that wasn't until this team was done.

@@Resenbrink but I agree with you about the 1980-82 teams...old champions at the end of their careers, plus not so great replacements. There was an evident gap between generations.

@@frankwells7520 I think like Czechoslovakia in Group 5. the Dutch did very well to qualify from this hard group with their mixture of veterans from 74/78 (Krol, Neeskens the Vanderkerkhofs, Rensenbrink) and newcomers (La Ling, Tahamata, Wijnstekers) but by the summer of 1980 they had run out of steam. The Dutch could have been forgiven if they had fallen apart here after the heartbreak of losing the World Cup final again in '78.

Op zich een goed team, maar het tijdperk van het Cruyff was al voorbij. Rensenbrink, loodste Nl naar het EK maar deed daar niet meer mee. Kist rendeerde niet. Een clubster

And Neeskens wasn't there in Italy. Geels and Peters, too. For some reason, Holland made some weird choices when selecting players.

@@frankwells7520 Neeskens had came back for 2 matches, play offs against Belgium, altouhg he played well, he wasn't the player he used to be. Bloody shame, he was and still is my hero. Of course Cruyff was te best, but in short lived soccer career I played at the same spot as Neeskens. Nmbr7. And I hadca shirt of the national team there I had same as Neeskens nmr 13.
