- Where were you when you first heard the term Porkchop Sandwiches?
One of the first viral video sensations on the internet holds a place close to our heart because it involves GI Joe. Back in the early 2000's a bunch of re-edits of original GI Joe cartoon PSA's were uploaded to the internet and they got a lot of attention.
They crashed a website and initiated a lawsuit towards the creator by Hasbro.

The first time I saw Porkchop Sandwiches, I can honestly say it was the absolute hardest I’ve ever laughed.

I still think that The PSA parodies haven't reached the level of recognition and cultural presence they deserve.
Every time I see a dog by itself in public I'm like "Aw hell naw, wassup dawg?"
I say this to my roommate’s dog on the regular. Nobody in the house gets the reference, but I do. It’s funny to me at least. “Ah hell nah what’s up dog”

My cross country team introduced me to the PSAs back when they were on a janky DVD ripped from the internet (circa 2005 or '06?), and every time a dog would bark at us as we ran by, we'd say the line too. XD
I feel old now that we are starting to study the history of memes...

Honestly, I'd love to see a video doc like this on Fabulous Powers or that infamous Juggernaut dub (y'know, the one that inspired that dreadful scene from X3). I feel like at least one of them would have an interesting backstory (as FP is a full video outside of the meme music video and it feels like there is more to it).
Soon there will be classes in Community Colleges discussing memes and hownit shaped history.

Pork chop sandwiches has been a constant non-sequitur in my social group for years. My heart skipped a beat when I saw this video. People remember!
Mine was always "Hey kid I'm a computa!"
For us it was "Look at all those pretty little hats..."
"Who wants a body massage?"

Someone I knew said "porkchop sandwiches" at work and was instantly accused of being racist toward Puerto Ricans somehow, and this was over a decade ago.
If I've achieved nothing else as a father, my eight-year-old now routinely (and randomly) says, "Hey kid! I'm a computer."

In college my dorm loved to pull the fire alarm in the middle of the night. Without fail, someone would shout "Porkchop sandwiches!" as we ran out of our rooms and the building.. which would only lead to the rest of the skit being recited as we stood out in the cold waiting for the OK to come back inside.
My God, did that smell good.
This story warmed my heart.

The PSA about how to tread water literally saved my life when I was 6 years old.
I slipped down a river bank into deep and fast-moving water and panicked. Before my head went under water, that PSA played itself out in my brain and moved my body like a marionette. Thank God for children's programming.

As a child of the 80s, these PSA parodies are pure gold… specially Porkchop Sandwiches and the reggae. I watched them back in 04 in ebaums and they still make me laugh uncontrollably
It was a good way to crap on our childhoods having seen these firsthand 40 years ago.
The reggae one had me initially scratching my head before I died laughing. "Wait, what? The kid just belched and they're looking at bottles in the bathroom. I don't und..." (Unintelligible reggae lyrics) All I got from that was "Italian bus rider,"
"Mr. Body Massage Machine GO."
"Uhhhhhhh what the hell?"
"BODY MASSAGE."
I say this all the time at work if we are tossing stuff around.

Ahh, I remember my coworkers introducing me to those, probably shortly after they started arriving on CZcams.
.. a year later I was diagnosed with cancer. So I had a steady supply of short clips that could make me laugh through any treatment I was enduring as needed, which was fantastic at times.
(Bet you thought I was going with 'that post gave me cancer', but I know posts can't give anyone cancer. And knowing.. is half the battle)
MakotoKamui...had cancer surgery and everything is negative so far. Being able to laugh is a good thing

The best one is the one where the child just falls off the cliff. It doesn't have any one liners, but its just distills the essence of the parodies into a simple 7 second clip.

Still very effective in its intended message, except it cuts to the action right away. We used to pause it midway to look at the kid's expression.
Those PSAs were a big formative part of my GI Joe collecting, and their influence continues today. I can't look at a Roadblock figure without asking if anyone wants a body massage, or a Gung-ho without calling him "Mr. Lafitte" and offering to show him an ollie.

Documentaries don't have to be on serious topics and they don't have to be long. All they have to do is provide a factual record of something from history.
My favorites are:

Man, VHS players in the early to mid 2000's. What a different era that was.
Yep. I had a DVD player since 2002, but I was still using VHS to record and play episodes of LOST right up to 2006. Recordable DVD players didn't really get cheap until around then, and by then most people were switching over to DVR or even official streaming.
@@starwarsunfiltered7848Most people had a DVD player once the PS2 came out (2002?). That was one of it's biggest selling points; why it dwarved the GameCube in sales.
For the same going rate to buy a DVD player, you could get a cutting edge gaming system that doubled as your DVD player.
I had a cheap Sharp unit in my dorm, and oddly we used it mostly to put out stereo audio for the little Trinitron TV. I had the RCA out plugged into a set of Altec Lansing computer speakers with a disproportionately large subwoofer.
This is still my favorite after all these years. Just last night I told my buddy on PS4 " Who wants a body massage" and get the phrase " Give em the stick, no don't give em the stick..oooooooooh" right back. We need more man it's been too long, but still just as fresh.

The PSA parodies are still some of the funniest things ever to exist! F%^& Hasbro for the C&D. Parody is fair use. Anyway, there needs to be HD re-releases!!!!!!

If they fought the C&D letters back in they day they definitely would have prevailed - parody has a LONG history of being a protected aspect of the Fair Use clause of copyrighted material. Yet the scumbag media companies continue to send out C&D letters regardless (read: most copyright claims on CZcams) in the hopes that the fear of legal repercussions will help jam "brand perception & representation integrity" down consumers throats.
Bums me out Hasbro managed to temporarily stifle the vids...
CZcams is really a historian’s dream because you can learn about pretty much every culture and just look at the primary source videos yourself

I didn't learn to fix anything at home growing up. After CZcams came out, I've since taught myself a ton of useful skills like working on my own vehicles, carpentry, etc. It's like electronic Dad. What a great time to be alive.

The GI Joe PSA parodies were the first meme videos I saw on CZcams. I just couldn't stop laughing and some of the lines still live rent free in my brain to this day. Legendary!
Once in a blue moon you stumble on to a channel and wonder how you've never seen it before.....I now have my next list of vids to binge for a long time to come

I was so impressed with my 25 year old coworker. I happened to say "And knowing is half the battle!" and he responded with "Go Joe!". I'm so proud of that little guy!
That's what the 80's did to us.
My local bartender is in her 30's. But she loves 80's music because of older siblings, so she always plays 80's on her shift. It's nice to grab a beer and listen to stuff I can relate too. Sometimes those younger ones surprise us.
The super long crash sequence and then "GAME OVER, YEAH!" gets me every time xD

Me and my roommates would speak full sentences IN these parodies for weeks at a time and somehow communicate perfectly well.
What's crazy to me is that so many OTHER people saw these! I'm in the UK and when they were on Ebaumsworld, there were about 5 of us who'd seen them; a few friends and my sister. I loved the lack of any context. They looked like cartoons I'd seen as a kid but we didn't get GI Joe over here (at least on terrestrial TV), so it was just divorced from reality by but a thread. Amazing stuff!
One of the most authentic connections I ever shared with a stranger was when I said "mister body machine GO!" in public to a friend, and someone else turned around in shock before giving a solemn nod.
Thumbs way up for "I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!!!" -- made me snicker as a kid; makes me cringe and duck my head as an adult...

These came out while I was in high school. Pork chop sandwiches was the first one I ever saw, but Dance might be my favorite.

Between some funny jokes, the rest of it is so hilarious because of the odd, surreal dialogue and noises the characters make and just the way some lines are said.
Seeing the Joes and the kids spouting off some strange dialogue and behavior elevates these to classic, weird comedy.

Wow, blast from the past. I remember coming across several of the videos, and I went straight to the Fensler Film website and downloaded them all, while I was in college I believe. That would have been late 90s or maybe early 00s. I still have those files, but I haven’t watched them in quite a while. Good times.

I was 23/24 years old, at my first IT job doing bench PC repair when me and my nerd buds saw and shared these videos on Ebaum's World. It feels good to look back on how much we've progressed, and to have been there from the beginning.

I showed these to my then girlfriend at the time and she -kind of- got it about halfway through. Body massages got a laugh. The last one i showed was Lady Jaye and the two kids. When the girl at the end goes “BAH!” she went into an uncontrollable fit of laughter.
I married that woman.
Amazing that I got to experience this _before_ Hasbro stepped in with a cease and desist order.
Every single time I hear someone say "and knowing is half the battle", I don't skip a single beat and reply "and the other half is porkchop sandwiches", (even if it wasn't directed at me) knowing full well that not a single person I say that to will ever get the reference, but it makes for a fun, random reply.

Eric is a friend so I was lucky to see these at Heaven before they became famous. They were an instant hit with all of us. Crazy to see them still talked about today.
Funny! Entertaining recap and a great memory. Was a senior in high school in 2004 when I saw these the first time. They have been a random quote staple since then. I remember the disappointment when they were removed from fenslerfilms and ebaumsworld.
These remind me of the PSAs - complete with Charles Barkley, for some reason - at the end of each episode of the animated “Clerks” episode.
Likely where Smith got the idea.
