@@jrmints80 that's not seems possible to me... I've had 18' saddles myself, and she would fit in them honestly. This one looks like max 17,5 more like 17'.
Problem is, those sizes are more for the leg lenght than butt size. And at this point of her size... she would look like she don't fit in any saddle...
I actually think they should for the time being forget about jumping and get her dressage saddle...
If it was up to me... customised Kentaur ELEKTRA, 18,5' inches, with shortened flaps, with woolen panels (any good saddlemaker can then customise those to fit properly horses backs)...
I know its european saddle company, but they do shipping overseas, they even send saddles to Japan for olympic games.
Dressage saddle would offer her a better stability, deeper saddle seat for her to not look like 'overflowing' the saddle, longer stirrups for her... She should not jumping on horses anyway at this point, I think she would feel much mor secure in dressage.
Also I think they sould consider buy her stirrups with wider floor, it would help her a lot.

The average or most common size saddle seat for the rider is a 17.5 inch. That is for the average size rider not the average size human which is still a small size person in the waist and thigh areas and average height. If the most common size is 17.5, and she is already using an 18 inch saddle, she needs to try at least 19 and maybe even some thing slightly larger. I have recommended if the most common size is 17.5, and she is already using an 18 inch saddle, she needs to try at least a 19 and maybe even some thing slightly larger. I have recommended SCHLEESE SADDLERY and there you virtual DIY custom saddle at least a half a dozen times and sent her information and links to the saddlery and the actual saddle. The problem is the professionals around them and especially their instructor still allowing himself to teach her lessons in any of those saddles that do not fit her. Even when she rides the larger draft horse that is a good horse for her, the saddle that they use for him is an average size saddle and still does not fit her. They still do not understand that just because the saddle fits the horse well, that if it does not fit the rider , the rider should not ride in it. Sophia unfortunately is fighting against her own position and balance right from the moment she steps in that stirrup and sits in any of those saddles. The parents need to do some research and realize that they’re professionals that are around them are not giving them the correct information or are just yessing them to death and taking their money for lessons to keep them happy and riding.

She absolutely needs a trainer to help her strength train, esp in her core, to lose weight, learn how to eat properly or healthy, etc. I was a competitive athlete in 2 diff sports & I totally agree this would make a world of difference for Sophie. You can’t ask your horse to be an athlete if you’re not going to work to be one too! And I found it so unfair to Chance, putting a large rider on him who’s super unbalanced & continually gaining weight so how could he ever get balanced or gain weight properly? Actually she hasn't fallen off since her previous horse Finn. Laura assumed this fall was because Denver spooked but he tripped and Sophie admitted that she doesn't hold on. She just tends to bail without using her seat and legs to stay on. Gabby hasn't fallen for well over a year and that was at a show when Chino refused a jump. In that case she just slid around his neck and stepped down onto her feet. In this last fall the horse she was riding caught the jump and fell but she was thrown clear. I know Laura gets mad when people bring it up but loosing weight and getting fitter will help Sophie to be able to ride from her seat and not need to rely on the reins to stay on. No 12 year old should need an 18+ inch saddle. Most horses can’t even be ridden in such a large seat due to the saddle going past the 18th vertebrae. I mean, its not fat shaming to say that she needs to lose weight. At her age, it's the parents responsibility and its an health issue + she will not enjoy as much as she would with a descent weight (no need to be thin) and built muscles. When you are adult it's your choice of life, but everytime I see a kid overweight like that I get fucking mad at the parents. FFS, feed them good food, then she will probably struggle her entire life losing weight because of her parents behavior. A study showed that when you are overweight and lose weight, the "fat cells" dont disappear, they just become smaller so it's hard to not gain weight again. It takes about 10 years to see them actually disappear. So, yeah, fat kiddd = future unhealthy fat adult who will struggle all his life with this problem. That's not fair for the kid. And feeding trash food to them should be considered as a lack of parenting just like when you don't take care of the basic needs. I know Im harsh on this, but as a person who lost 18 kg when I was 17, I can tell you, I ll never go back to this again and life is way more enjoyable when you don't struggle to breathe every meter.

How Laura, who claims to be a medical professional, handled the concussions was though. Gabby was back at the barn, holding someone else's horse for a bath and Sophie was shopping and at an amusement park two days later. Her kids are going to be dead or have life impacting injuries before they make it out of that house.
She's already said they they'll start wearing proper footwear IF there's an incident with flip flops and sandals. Fine if you want to take that risk with your own kids but then she lets her non-horsey grand daughter lead a horse out to the field in open toed shoes.

I literally E-mailed Laura once telling her that Sophie needs a custom saddle. She needs a bigger seat like an 18 in. but with shorter leg flaps because even though Sophie is a bigger girl, she has short legs. I told Laura that standard 18 in. saddles come with longer leg flaps because unfortunately most companies assume that bigger means taller/vice versa. I even linked online ads for saddles of that nature, along with actual company listings of saddles that would fit Sophie’s needs. I never got a reply.
Oh also another thing, as a plus size equestrian there is really no “nice” way to say this so I’m just going to say it. Sophie needs to go to the gym. Not to lose weight necessarily but to build muscle. Just based off of the way she holds herself while riding, it seems as though she is lacking the leg and core muscle that is necessary for riding. Also based off of the situations that have caused her to fall it is clear she needs more muscle. Everyone falls but I find that she falls even after tiny accidents. A rider with good seat, leg, and core muscles would not fall off after a refusal (at the trot) over a small jump like in one of their older videos. I really do feel bad for Sophie because I also had to learn and read that same paragraph. But, the sooner Sophie and Laura accept it, the sooner Sophie can progress in her riding journey.

The video shown is what a lot of people do for at "liberty showing" especially with stallions so they can see their movement naturally. My Arabian loves running around like a bat out of hell when he's feeling good, I don't ever need to chase him around for that. To prove his "Natural Type" . It's not just for the prize $$. It's to get breedings. The whole reason for Arabian shows is to sell horses and foals, to sell breedings to stallions, etc. It's all about the "business".
Some Arabian owners love them for their friendly and cooperative personalities, their easy trainability, their beauty, and their naturally smooth ride. Arabians also make the best Endurance horses.

Arabian horse shows have a class specifically to show off how the horse moves and catch the action of the Arabian horse. The class first requires the owners to free their horse and then get them to move around the arena to show off - most owners use whips to direct the horse but never use the whips on the horse - then, they must show they have the ability to catch their horse within a specific amount of time. From what I understand, this class is timed. The horse is used to doing this, even though it may appear it is nervous. If they sent you the entire clip, you will be able to see that the horse is not scared and when the owners stop asking the horse to move it's feet, it stands to be caught. It's all a practiced event and beautiful to watch.

Arab person here. I get what they are after in the stallion class. As a breed, Arabians are highly energetic and "fizzy." My mare (who is nine) still has her moments when I get her out of the field and I can just tell it's one of those days. I don't even try and ride her: I just boot her up and turn her loose in the arena and let her gallop herself out. It's actually pretty amazing to watch, since she is so athletic.
A lot of people can appreciate watching an athletic horse run around and play, which is why (imo) this "sport" exists.
But throughout the Arabian world there are tons of people who don't care about their horse's mind when they are training.
People want an Arab to look wild and spirited, like they are bursting with energy that is just barely contained by the handler. This mentality fuels many abusive training techniques. Arabians are a highly sensitive breed, and lots of Arab people use that to their advantage to get a horse worked up and flashy, so that they stand out enough to win a class.
Who wants to see a calm, obedient horse trotting with a good rhythm along the rail?
People want to see the fiery, wild, spirited Arab who is careening around the ring leaving all the other horses in the dust.
It becomes a science of "how crazy can we make this horse look without actually losing control?"
I disagree with this, but I am one of few.
I could go on for paragraphs of all the abusive techniques I have seen and heard about over the years.
But I think it all stems from the mentality of 'winning is everything', and the mentality that the horse is an emotionless object that is meant to be trained with 'whatever works' to achieve the desired outcome.

I have a thoroughbred who gets fizzy has his moments. Big moments. The difference today is growing up most kids in english all went from ponies to thoroughbreds. We had to learn early in life how to ride a hot spirited horse in a snaffle. Now days if a horse sneezes he is too crazy to ride for some. I am now 65 and ride my thoroughbred regardless , fizzy or not, no pre ride lunge, no loose run about first, I just get on and ride the horse I have that day. And I expect a reasonably trained horse to keep it together in tack. A few snorts and spook, an excited hop, all part of riding a living animal. Another reason I never lunge and let a horse buck in tack, that tells the horse bucking twerking with the saddle on is ok. The other breed growing up that was popular were Arabs, Angalo Arabs etc. Teens rode those bareback too, hot or not. The problem today is few kids learn to ride a hotter horse without lunging it to death first, drugging it etc. Or ripping it's mouth off in a harsh bit. I know of entire school programs that drug the horses daily. The kids never really learn to ride. Who cares if a horse jigs to and from turnout, managing that ( not a death grip or constant tugging) it starts when we put the halter on, set the horse up for focus before we leave the barn . I learned this stuff at 14 when I graduated from a pony. We had to. No one was drugging our horses. We had to ride.

@@cjjohnson5311 I agree and disagree. While I think that being able to ride and safely handle an excited horse is an important skill, I also think there is a boundary of safety and the overall wellbeing of the horse.
If a horse is bouncing off the walls with energy, I don't think it's cowardly to let the horse blow off steam before getting on. Maybe not with tack on, because that could be dangerous and like you said, cause bad habits, but if a horse is feeling that worked up it can be a needless risk to try and ride right off the bat.
Now I am definitely not advocating for the people who lunge into the ground, but personally (in my experience) I find it cruel that when my horse is THAT energized (which is only occasionally) to try and get on and make her work in the patterns I want just ends up making her more explosive, and it goes from happy excited to nervous when I ask her to do things while she is so overstimulated.
Every horse is different, and I think it's unfair to make blanket statements saying this or that should be banned just because it applies to certain situations.
All that being said though, I definitely think that the lunging to death and the drugging are not ok, and if you have a horse that is always crazy enough to (in their minds) require those fixes there is something else wrong with the horse, the rider, or the training that needs to be resolved.

@@roseschaefer5079 I should have clarified , If a horse is stabled at night or only out for a few hours a day I never ride before turnout. It's unnatural for a horse to stand in a stall 20 hours a day. That said I am a boarder so I have to make do with what is available and in my area 9 to 3 is the best most farms offer. If I could, I would do a walk out with pasture, but it's very wet here and the ground does not hold up. I also provide a long training lead so my horse can leap up in joy away from handler if needed. But I also coach them on setting my horse up for success by getting him focused on the handler before leaving stall. So to amend, if a horse has plenty of turnout, at least 6 to 8 hours people should not need to lunge to death, ride with a death grip etc. But people do it all the time at training barns even after turnout. Also I never ride my horse before turnout, ask him to stand for a farrier or a vet before he has had at least half day turnout. Expecting a horse to be sane and stand like a statue after being caged 24/7 is also unfair, but I see that at training barns. And the horses get yanked around when what they needed was the owner to schedule their vet and farrier later in the day after they had time to be a horsr . I still have a hot horse, and I enjoy learning the nuances of working with that. My bigger point is that few kids or young trainers learn to ride hot horses anymore and those horse suffer with harsh bits, excessive lunging. Also so few kids ride bareback anymore they don't develop a sticky seat. I have a reactive horse, and a very smart trainer taught him to have tiny reactions when a human is on board e.g he can have a tiny two step, but he can't buck, spin or bolt. He figured out the deal quickly. That makes him much more relaxed when we ride, knowing he can communicate without punishment. But sadly most riders today can not sit even a tiny two step spook. I also though have seen my horse hook on to a natural horsemen and unbelievably go from a fire dragon to 100 percent focused on handler literally under a minute.. Which leads me to think most of us horse owners still have a lot to learn in handling and reading horse horses. His tip was we should always be one step ahead of what a horse is about to do and redirect them to better behavior instead of correcting after the fact. Sounds a lot easier than it is....

    Just saying.
She needs a larger horse and saddle, and some core strength.
I just don't think she has the desire to be better, I think she rides because the family does, and she's gotten roped into but deep down she's not feeling it- you have to REALLY LOVE riding to be even decent, just because it's such hard work and requires so much dedication, you have to want it at least a little, and I don't think Sophie does.
Maybe have a conversation with her OFF CAMERA, and see what Sophie really wants.
If she still wants to ride, great, get get a bigger horse and a saddle that fits, and go back to the basics.

If someone learned balance while they were young and fit they could possibly transfer that skill as they put on the weight gradually as if seen people sometimes do. To a point. If she keeps going like this I would expect her to get hurt again and again or her horse will pull a stifle or something. If I still had a horse, someone that size would not be getting on.

She's always blaming the saddle or stirrups or some piece of equipment. There's an excuse for everything, instead of the very real fact that Sophie doesn't yet have a solid independent seat.
It doesn't matter if you want to just ride in your backyard.... an independent seat is a NECESSITY to mounted equine activities.
That seat is created through a lot of boring hard sucky work. No stirrups, no reins, on a lunge, aboard a steady Eddie that plods along.

Absolutely. You don’t realise how much it’s really affecting your riding until you loose it. You become a totally different rider. More balanced, better posture, less tired at the end. The horse will thank you too, especially if you loose a large amount of weight the horse will be happier to work over their back and engage the hind end correctly.
I believe as an equestrian, you have the responsibility to be the easiest load to carry that you can. That includes both being at a healthy weight, fit and balanced. I tell people I coach to loose weight all the time. Laura seems to think it’s rude to comment on but she needs to get rid of the emotion and see that it’s simply a fact. Sophie is obese and it’s neglectful to not try to intervene. Kids her age should be able to run around with their friends. Sophie is now unable to trot up her own horse.

What bothers me about Laura is that Gabby their other daughter had, according to them, a rotational fall on a school horse over a jump, about a month ago now. All that you saw of that video was a black screen and her, Laura, gasp mumble a few words. They didnt show the emt/hospital or anything - that I can recall. They did of course use a still imagine from the fall in at least three thumbnails that I can remember and mentioned her bad fall, expensive fall, fall, in what seemed like ten videos. They dont treat their children equally, sofie's feels wrong and like an exploit, makes me feel uneasy. Either show things or don't, dont be half and half or make an exception for one child for no reason. Since that first video of Sofie's fall - or lack there of in terms of video - the only two other videos posted at this time have had Sofie in the thumbnail and todays video was title "Truth about Sofia's Fall". For someone who doesnt like talking about falls, three consecutive videos have talked about it and used it. I foresee at least three other videos mentioning the fall and the poor kid will probably be in every thumbnail for a week with her swollen and bruised face. I used to watch them years ago but the clickbait, zero progress, ignorance, and lack of listening when "always" asking for advice drove/drives me nuts. Also Gabby's fall scared Sofie, she was riding in the ring at the same time, Chance apparently "spooked" just backing up. That's concerning to me as well as it feels like its slightly violating patient privacy in a way. Sure, asking and telling the patient "do you remember what happened?", "where does it hurt?" getting a pain scale and "I'm about to obtain a set of vitals" I guess that's not too bad, but I'd rather not take any chances. Bearing mind these riders ranged from complete beginners to advanced cross country riders, young kids to older adults. To only have that many falls means that we taught our riders well and we matched our horses to our riders pretty well. I take quite a bit of pride in knowing that as an instructor I would step in when something didn’t seem right or our horses didn’t match the rider. They are clearly not suited to each other if she is falling off that much and her riding eq isn’t established enough for her horse and if not the parent then the intruder tear should pick up on this.

I have never ONCE thought to film ANY sort of struggles she's had in her lessons, and although she has never fallen off, I hope someone SLAPS me if my first instinct during that type of situation ever becomes 'I should film this.'

I agree! I dont know if you know, but there’s this channel (I think it’s called harlow and popcorn), and the kid fell off of her horse, broke her arm, and the mother kept shoving the camera into her face, even when she was crying. It was so horrible to watch, and there were so many people who didn’t see the problem with it. Sickening :/

I have been riding for 20 years and have fallen off twice, i started with training at a swedish local riding school when i was very young, and got my core training from great instructors. Without that core training and balance training I would not be the rider I am today. It does not have anything to do with weight at all here, someones few extra kilos doesn't affect a good rider, the training does. I wish the sweet girl the best, but as you say... she needs another instructor and not to be pushed or even encoraged into doing what she is not ready for. A child cannot be kept responsible, its the parents in this case. Imagine as a child...when you grow up.. having all your old riding "bloopers" open for the public :/ How will this affect her?

Yes it’s all about proper training and foundation. My daughter has been riding for 11 years and she only few fall a hand few times which were silly stuff for the most part. She now 16 years old and is jumping over a meter confidently. She also is working with a young 5 year old and teaching him to jump with the help of a certified USEF trainer. When I was that young I didn’t accomplish much because I was with unfortunately a lot of bad trainers and fell off a lot until I was in my 20s when I finally gotten somewhere. When my daughter had interest in riding I went to look at a lot of lesson programs first knowing what I was looking for from my personal experiences before selecting the right one with a team of educated trained horses. She loves it so much. And she is smart on being safe too.

Here's the thing. I'm in Ontario in a region where our riding lesson facilities are not ideal to say the least. After 30+ years I was able to find quality and have since left the region to find the best I'm able to for myself and my young children. It takes a lot of time to learn when you're only taught one way (I've been to 7 barns over my lifetime and they've all been very similar). But if you're open to it, it can happen. I couldn't be more thankful to have my kids learn the basics until they become automatic. I knew people who would fall once a lesson and it was just a joke. That's not okay....go back to basics. Ugggh!!!!

Unfortunately Laura hasn't tried to find a better barn with more skilled instructors. Sophie and Gabby shouldn't even be in the same lesson. If sophie doesn't step up her game she will be forever riding with the little kids at the horse shows. And by "sophie" I mean Laura needs to get her to a different barn.

RALEIGH, the facial expressions are the best part of this video!
the lease with chance is done. the entire video is basically staring at the ground while sophie is talking to ambo people. Laura says she doesn't like to video the kids falls because it's a privacy thing and then Laura also says that she doesn't want to scare younger riders. I think that maybe the option to post falls or post content of the ground while talking to emts is a yes or no. I mean gabby has some minimal improvement but their position and hand position etc is yucky. some people will never listen nor learn as they feel they know everything.

Laura doesn't want to scare younger riders but is quite happy to show Chino trying to mount Willow who recently came into season. She's got a, "Thing," about wanting to show us animals mating, she's filmed Gracie winking and their rabbits humping and then some. Either we're old enough to have seen it all before anyway, or we're too young and innocent to need to have her biology lessons!

The excuse of 'young, impressionable people' watching is over-used and unnecessary. (That's my opinion)

Laura decided to film it whilst shouting at him and cracking up with laughter all at the same time . She did get Gabby to separate them, but as you can imagine Laura wouldn't shut up about it for most of the rest of the video, by constantly reliving the moment talking to us watchers and retelling it to the girls and then Sam and asking if it was even safe to post it on the internet. She could have easily decided to edit it out or carry on talking about other stuff instead that they were doing that day, so as not to cause any confusions over their widely assumed reputation of being a family channel.

Now that Chino has been out with girls it will be ULTRA difficult to integrate him back into a male herd or even mixed herd.

@@SarahG1183 I don't know how long they're intending to keep Chino at home. There was some talk about making a separate field for him before the winter season sets in, but since then have done nothing about it, as he'd be better off there than standing in all that mud that he will soon be doing if he goes back to their boarding barn. I wonder if they'll give him the winter off as Gabby seems to like riding Lily, a lesson horse. I'm surprised there's been no accidents given the amount of times Laura keeps telling us that one of the mares is in season so often now according to her, but they don't seem to be worried about them still remaining with Chino. It's usual for Laura not to be able to anticipate danger very well, as we unfortunately know all too well.

I grew up riding until I was about 17. I am 35 now and my 13 year old daughter caught the bug and has been riding about 3 years now. Do we relate? Yes. Do we have a common interest? Yes. She comes to me for advice at times but other times she wants to learn from her trainer. Point being is that my daughters experience is her own and I do not try to interfere or make her aspire to MY unfulfilled goals. I had a hunter pony. Right now she wants to jump. If she ever wants to do anything else I fully support it and will let her do her own thing and live her own dreams.
