I liked the dream sequence. The Sopranos was not meant to be a gangster flick, it's a drama series with a Italian mob setting; the dream sequence is a bloody good narrative driver into the characters' psyche, which is exactly what we want to know and why we all watched this series to begin with.

It’s such an small part of Tony’s dream sequence but I love the part when he’s in the car full of dead mobsters Tony turns sees Artie for a second and he says “What ?” It’s that pure randomness of dreaming about people in his life that makes it feel like a dream everyone has had before about people they know . Also I like when Tony is being chased by the mob of people Artie is the one who appears in some random alley and helps Tony escape I saw that as Tony subconsciously seeing Artie as his only true friend.

if charmaine tells whoever it is to “stop” calling her, that implies tony has done this more than once and that this isn’t the first time charmaine has answered the phone to this mysterious stranger.
The Test Dream is one of, if not my favourite Sopranos episode. I really like the eerie feeling it has all through the dream sequence and how Tony basically has no control. I also liked the detail where it's suggested that Artie was actually the bad boy when they were young and he was a good kid who had a bad influence (in more than one place as we know from many saints of newark). Also the bullets melting was them turning into chocolate, you could see the brass casings of them becoming like foil. It's worth checking out PKA when they talked about it, Kyle said that it's actually a relatively common nightmare for people who own/shoot guns regularly, similar to teeth falling out.
Couple things I’ve never seen pointed out before: 1.Valentina starting a fire while cooking seems reminiscent of Livia starting a fire while cooking back in season one, which ties into the thing about Tony falling for women who were similar to Livia. 2.Can’t tell if this is intentional, but the part where Tony’s running away from a crowd in the streets reminds me a lot of After Hours
I know there’s people who hate the dream sequences. But I personally could watch an entire season of them. It’s SO fascinating seeing Tony’s subconscious manifestating his emotions, at the end of the day this was a show about getting into Tony’s mind, hence the therapy
Episodes like this are made better when you can binge watch. I think a problem with a lot of people had with the episode is they feel like they waited a whole week to watch a dream sequence put in the grand scheme of the season and even the series it’s a lot more impactful
I binged the Sopranos in 2021. I agree that the show is masterful and it is easier to see when you watch the show in a few months as opposed to years. I can understand that people who followed the show when it initially aired for almost a decade and wait a week for each episode to air to be turned off by the shows twists and turns. I watched it over a few months and never had a problem with its direction and I thought it was interesting because of episodes like this.
I agree. Having first watched the episode during a binge of season 5 I was absolutely in love and made a note to revisit it. Just watched it again without context of the episodes leading up to it and the shift in tone/pace isn’t anywhere near as clear or effective. I can imagine it not landing as well for some people just based on how they watch the show. Easily in my top 10 tv episodes all time
I LOVE this all the dream sequences. This was TERRIFYING to me because of its surrealism. This is something rarely ever done in mainstream media and to be perfected in such a way, TRULY show's why this is the greatest series ever...
I think it’s interesting that Paulie in the crowd when Gloria is the news reporter. I’ve always wondered if it has something to do with the Paulie/Patsy theory on who killed Tony…? Because he’s subtly in that other dream too when he’s looking through the binoculars into the train (?) station. It just seems like a little hint DC might build in.
This episode is so, SO masterfully done. Chase must keep a detailed dream journal, because the accuracy is astounding. He must regularly write/record his descriptions of dreams immediately after waking up, which is interesting because Melfi is shown doing the same thing after her sex dream I believe. I have crazy weird dreams like this all the time. I’m not a violent person, but over the past few years I’ve lost a lot of people close to me, including my father who supported my sister and I without our mother. I’m not even 24 yet. So death and violence are a big component when I have this kind of dream. All of that loss weighs heavily on my mind, and it’s not uncommon for me to wake up crying. Anyways, the way that people pop in and out, the setting changes abruptly, people say and do strange things, and blatantly clear metaphors and allegories are presented… It’s just the best representation of bizarre/bad dreams that I have ever seen put to film.
i thought at first that that was part of Tony's weird dream, especially the scene after seeing him dressed like some surgeon (it was 5 am while i was watching lmao)
I love the dream sequence. It perfectly captures how weird and vivid dreams can be. Like Ive been in situations that, while not as extreme as Tony's, have produced really fucky and memorable dreams.
Ah the start of Animal Blundetto. You know I wished he still lived into season 6. You get the impression he was just kind of shoe horned in. His introduction, writing and arc are done masterfully. Have to love this episode. The reunion with nearly all the Dead showing up just shows even David Chase can't escape nostalgia. Plus it's fun seeing all the dead characters back.
I remember sitting there when the episode ended, tony on the phone to carmela and the view of Central Park. Suddenly the commodores song played and the credits rolled. I kept watching the credits roll listening to the song. It was such a strange feeling and something I'd never felt before with other programs. Like I'd been on a crazy roller coaster that just kept me in constant thought. Such an amazing program and a great video 👍
The ending of this episode always makes me profoundly sad. Tony know Carm is the only good thing in his life and they have shared so much, but they are miles and miles apart despite their familiarity.
I used to find it boring but as I grew to understand the meanings and appreciate how realistic of a portrayal of dreams this is it has become one of my favorite. It’s evident that Tony reached an eerily deep layer of his psyche by having his recurring dream of Coach Molinaro.
It's my favorite episode. People can bemoan it for the dream sequence but the fact sopranos separated itself from other mob media was it's ability to tackle deep introspection and psychology. If you don't like this episode, then sopranos was never for you.
The dream sequence was all about tonys past, present and future. Him dreaming about vin and gloria in regards his regret for how he treats people. Carmine sr. being dead is all about the blood bath he left behind and his feelings about carmella. Then we see him witnessing tony b clip phil leotardo as a means of revenge, this ties in with the dead mobsters as they died from tony/tonys crew. This sequence is all about regret. Tony regrets not being able to stop tony b from retaliating(forshadowing), treating people in his life with disdain, not whacking carmine sr. to avoid Johnny's power trip and letting his affairs affect his home life. His coach chastises his career choices so he's second guessing his decision on choosing a criminal path. The consequences are finally setting in on tony. Now his cousin is leaving him a shit storm to confront that he wasn't prepared for ergo why the title is called test dream.
I’m a huge fan of the dream sequences, my favorite scene in the whole show is the part of the coma dream when tony is about to wake up. The scenes are incredibly realistic and the symbolism is beautiful. They are super interesting to watch
One of my favorite episodes! I got a lot of David Lynch vibes from the majority of the dream sequences, only difference is the sopranos ones give more foreshadowing/information to the audience lol
Fun fact, the scene where they're chasing him through the streets is a reference to the 20's Frankenstein flick when a mob was chasing him down just the same. Funny cause Shlomo the Jewish guy way back in season 1 tells Tony thats hes "a Frankenstein" also, the guy that shoots at Tony from the window is supposed to be Lee Harvey Oswald lol
It was really nice seeing Makazian again. Can't believe they brought him back just to sing lmfao. This was definitely one of my favorite episodes of the show because I just love all the dream sequences in it. Definitely inspired later works, I honestly had Inception in my head during some of it.
Have you read Maribou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh? A guy in a coma lives an entire life during his coma. His coma life and his real life are both fascinating.
One nugget off the rolling stone interview last week was that Gandolfini called David Chase “Satan”. Thought that was interesting since Chase was on the other line of that call.
I love this episode. One of my top five Sopranos episodes, ever. The stuff with Carmine in the bed, " answer the f-n thing", Junior's lawyer in the crowd, Annette Benning talking about coming out the bathroom with just your dingaling in your hand, and Artie, oh Artie, in the car; "I'm wiped". I love that. Great episode.
I always thought the "Test Dream" title was a play on "test drive" because of Gloria. If it's more to do with dreams of school tests, I wonder if it has anything to do with Coach Molinaro telling Tony "you're unprepared!"
I love this episode. In my top 5 maybe even top 3 episodes of The Sopranos. I also never realized David Chase was the voice on the phone at the beginning of the dream. Thanks for another Easter Egg!
Losing your teeth in a dream is associated with some sort of feeling of inadequacy, mostly in the context of being able to provide for yourself, but also things like being able to defend yourself or be an effective leader or provider.
Kino my friend, you really deserve the position of a captain for all the videos you've been doing for us Mob historians and wannabe wiseguys..... Maybe even a position of a underboss or consiglere!
In case you're gonna do more crime series... That's a magazine in the pistol, not a clip. A clip is more like a flat, springy piece of metal that holds the rounds at the rear. You feed it from the top and it pops up a bit as you shoot each round. It usually springs out when empty. In the military, they're expendable. An M-1 has a clip. An AR-15 and modern pistols have a magazine, which fully encloses the rounds. When empty, the pistol slide stays back (open). You press a button to release the empty mag, attach or push in a new one at the bottom of the firearm and release the slide, which feeds the next round into the chamber.
I loved this episode, I didn’t know about Tracee, replacing meadow that’s a great detail!! I guess it was cut because it was too on the nose as far as symbolism. I think the horse thing is also kind of too literal for the level of subtext the show used. What do you make of the Annette Benning thing... that she actually plays herself.. and that Tony is kind of smitten by her. Thought that was pretty interesting and very true to what happens in dreams usually.
All the dream sequences in The Sopranos are excellent, so of course I LOVE this episode. The dreams are done very well. You can see the writers did a lot of research about dreams. I wouldn't call things like losing teeth in a dream "tropes", though. These are events that happen in dreams that are are shared across humanity regardless of race, sex, and social strata. Teeth falling out represents the dreamer not being able to control things in their life (I too, have had this dream multiple times).
This was a freaking amazing episode! I guess as a plot driver, it doesn't engage, but it provides so much subtext on Tony's relationships with the people in his life and his anxieties.
i didn't know teeth falling out was a common thing in dreams. I've never experienced that myself, or at least remember a dream where that happened. i really liked how the sopranos depicted dreams bc it felt like the closest to reality any show has come to doing so. it would've made sense if they added tracee in the dream, but I guess also heavy-handed maybe. legit, at the end when you said "did you love it, did you hate it?" I expected you to follow with "what would you rate it?" lel. solid sopronologue, kino.
I love this episode. I usually dislike dream sequences in films and shows because they can be so unpredictable (and scary lol) but this one I love for some reason. It is, as you said, very authentic and dream-like. Thanks for the video once again!
Same man. It happens with other things in my dreams too - like maybe I'm carrying something important, but then the bag starts to break or tear. But for whatever reason, guns falling apart are the most common overall.
I wonder if there’s a connection with Tony’s teeth falling out in the dream sequence and when later on in Season 6B (The Second Coming) he curb stomps Coco for sexually harassing Meadow. You can see all of his teeth flying across the floor and a few scenes later, Tony’s sitting with Carmela during one of AJ’s therapy sessions (the one where AJ says “It’s all a big nothing”, quoting Livia), when he notices one of Coco’s teeth tucked in his pant leg and hides it. Idk, I’m probably reading too much into it (that may have just been added for comedic effect), but the imagery is quite similar between the two episodes. EDIT: another possibly important thing I forgot to mention originally was that this was the same episode where AJ attempted suicide, hence the family therapy session. Perhaps there’s a connection there?
Hey Kino, Your channel really reminds me of The Vile Eye. Maybe it’s because I subbed to you both around the same time.. anyway just wanted to know if you had heard of him?
Thanks for adding the Charmaine scene its not available in clip form on CZcams .. I was most attracted to her and the girl with the white fur coat in the 6th season out of all the Sopranos girls
One thing: when the mag falls out of his gun, the bullets don't melt. They turn to shit. That's why he starts retching as he tries to reload the mag. It's a callback to one of his earliest conversations with Melfi: "I'm like King Midas in reverse: everything I touch turns to shit."
I noticed this, I even specifically thought they had some chocolate makers come in to make bullet shaped chocolates wrapped in gold foil. Very nice touch
I’ve always thought the sopranos had some of the best depiction of dreams in any piece of cinema.

No one does dreams like this show. They nail it. Great episode imo.
I love this episode. In my top 5 maybe even top 3 episodes of The Sopranos. I also never realized David Chase was the voice on the phone at the beginning of the dream. Thanks for another Easter Egg!
Easily one of the best episodes, as from now The Sah of Iran refers to tony b as “animal Blundetto” or “that animal”
The dream sequence of him reaching for the weapon behind the toilet is a foreshadow of the “MOG” in the final episode too. At least I believe.
I thought it was godfather
Losing your teeth in a dream is associated with some sort of feeling of inadequacy, mostly in the context of being able to provide for yourself, but also things like being able to defend yourself or be an effective leader or provider.
I loved this video! Thank you very much! I follow you and try to never miss your vids.
Kino my friend, you really deserve the position of a captain for all the videos you've been doing for us Mob historians and wannabe wiseguys..... Maybe even a position of a underboss or consiglere!
Borko says he wants Kino clipped! Yesterday!
But I've got subscribers. *They've* got subscribers.
Tony backing up on the horse is my favorite out of context scene
I never quite got the slack people gave the show for these dream sequences, they’re one of the most impressive moments the Sopranos has to offer .
6:58 they actually turn to shit, that's why he starts gagging and coughing.
Reminiscent of Vito Jr in the showers....whatever happened there.
Great episode. I think David Chase really gets the essence of dreams and his translation on the screen is spot on.
Has anyone else ever had that test dream before about being back in high school I've had that more than once
Watching your reviews makes me want to rewatch the series! My dad loved the show since it started and he got me into it! It’s a great show!!
Pie-O-My in the house is amazing
I love your channel. Thank u so much for your effort 👏🏻
David Lynch would have been proud of this episode.
You said that doing this type of episode was courageous. Not sure that's the word. I would say, very allegorical.
I’ve been waiting for this episode for some time on your show. Test Dream is my favorite episode of the entire series. Without a doubt.
The dream sequences in The Sopranos legitimately freak me out more than most horror movies
This was a freaking amazing episode! I guess as a plot driver, it doesn't engage, but it provides so much subtext on Tony's relationships with the people in his life and his anxieties.
Another great upload salute kino!
"Is it light where you are yet?"
This is one of my favorite Sopranos' episodes.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has the teeth falling out dream. What's that about, anyway? What does it mean?
I always thought it was fear of what we can't control, for me anyway 🥺 like a powerlessness over your own fate
The melting bullets was such a weird and cool touch....
The Talk with his coach has to be one of my favorite scenes in history.
i didn't know teeth falling out was a common thing in dreams.
Do you think Tony dreamed about being in bed with Carmine because he wanted Charmaine
Interesting but don’t think so, I don’t think it works that way in dreams
I love this episode. I usually dislike dream sequences in films and shows because they can be so unpredictable (and scary lol) but this one I love for some reason. It is, as you said, very authentic and dream-like. Thanks for the video once again!
Kino the thumbnail should’ve been Charmaine to keep up with ur tasteful thumbnails 🤣
Let me tell you something. I have a semester and a half of college, so I understand Freud.
With Tony being on the horse I took it as he has to get off his high horse and be himself with her.
also too, his connection to his horse with Ralph...a lot to connect there..
I've had many dreams where i have guns or weapons but when i try to use them they disassemble or break
Same man. It happens with other things in my dreams too - like maybe I'm carrying something important, but then the bag starts to break or tear. But for whatever reason, guns falling apart are the most common overall.
This was the best dream Tony had and one of the best episodes of the series imo. Hope you get into dream's details more in the future
can you make a comprehensive video about this episode/dream? i enjoyed those
This Pure Kino guy here, really toys with the line between the Sacred and the Propane.
That was deep .. I never put all that together ... thanks for connecting the dots .. the story is so rich and so much to unpack
Was Snow-white difficile??
I always really loved the episode. Great analysis
Not refuting but rather adding but having your teeth fall out in a dream typically is induced by stress.
I think teeth coming out in dreams is you are worried about dying but I could be wrong
Hey Kino,
Your channel really reminds me of The Vile Eye. Maybe it’s because I subbed to you both around the same time.. anyway just wanted to know if you had heard of him?
One of my absolute favorite Sopranos episodes. Love love love!
Great analysis
Thanks for adding the Charmaine scene its not available in clip form on CZcams .. I was most attracted to her and the girl with the white fur coat in the 6th season out of all the Sopranos girls
Tony B never had the makings of a varsity Rick paper scissors player
One thing: when the mag falls out of his gun, the bullets don't melt. They turn to shit. That's why he starts retching as he tries to reload the mag. It's a callback to one of his earliest conversations with Melfi: "I'm like King Midas in reverse: everything I touch turns to shit."
I noticed this, I even specifically thought they had some chocolate makers come in to make bullet shaped chocolates wrapped in gold foil. Very nice touch
