OMG--does it get any better than this? Country music from the 60's was defined by great singers who all had their unique voices, unique sounds. You knew right away if you were listening to Johnny Cash, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn. Nowadays, everyone sounds the same. And to get any air time, you have to be under 30 years old. What a shame--THIS is country music.
Perfection comes along once in a lifetime... so y'all better appreciate what a treasure we have in George Jones. You and I will never see anyone better...
This song takes me back to when I was a young boy back in the 70's riding in my Dad's old ratty pick up truck going to work with him. He would always let me have donuts and would tell me not to tell my Mom. We always seemed to listen to George or Merle. Simple times, but I wouldn't trade them.
George Jones has the deepest well to draw from, and when the water comes up, it is the kindest gentlest coolest music that any country singer has ever produced. He has had one hell of a life, but I forgive him every time I hear him perform this song. What a musical genius.
We lost a legend today... but legends never, ever, die. I hope y'all appreciate what a treasure we had in George Jones, because there'll never be another. Rest in peace, Possum.
First record I ever bought, on 45rpm disc, in Smithfield Market, Belfast, Northern Ireland, I was a young 15 year old boy, it is still my favourite George Jones song 50 some years later.
I got the great oportunity work set up for the Possum at the Capital Music Hall in Wheeling West Virginia for several years in a row, and at every show there was always some people from Canada. I was present in Franklin, TN for "Fans at the Farm" in 2004 and there were a bunch of people from Canada there. I salute you, you Canadians really know what good music is!
George Jones is without doubt the greatest country. Singer of all time and I am so pleased to say I saw him when he appeared in hull years ago Terry staves
the man lived his life the way he wanted a real gangster cowboy rip my man you will be never forgotten and never quit singing just cause your in heaven
1962 first time I heard this song. 54 years later and teardrops still come when I hear it.RIP George , like jerry lee said , you can't be topped by anyone.
Who's gonna fill HIS shoes?? I'm afraid Vince Gill said it the way it is, at George's funeral: I don't think they make that kind of shoes anymore :( George will be sadly missed by all TRUE country fans for a very long time.
I've been in PA for 3 months, going from bar to bar playing George's music and referring to him as the Possum and NOBODY even knows what I'm talking about. That Mason Dixon line is something.
@lakeland666 you are 100% correct on that statement: They most definitely do not make country music like this anymore. All we hear on the radio now-a-days is pop music. I find very little heart in true country music on todays radio. Not saying it's not there - but there is so much re-manufactured pop music claiming to be country that just doesn't "cut the mustard" anymore.

Damn...that man could sing a country song.
I flew from glasgow to florida with my daughter just to see him, worth every penny.

It looked like he was pretty close to making himself cry there.
As James Taylor said "When George sings this song, it makes your dog weep... it makes your roof leak." Sing it tonight for the good lord Mr. Jones.
In my opinion, the best voice in country music. Simply wonderful.
This is George's best version. I think Tammy's presence spurred him to do his absolute best. I suspect, she was the only women he ever really loved.
