- 2011 Dyna Wide Glide 96" with a set of Vance and Hines big shots staggered. Removing the stock baffles and installing the quiet baffles. Sound clips of both baffles as well as no baffles.
I had a 2001 1200 sportster that I had put short shots on, They were too loud for my community so I ordered the quiet baffles to install hoping to quiet them down enough to keep the piece in my community, After installing them I realized they really didn't quiet the pipes very much, However there was a considerable amount of difference in the way the bike preformed throughout the RPM range. The bike seemed to have quite a bit more torque throughout the entire RPM range, I was quite impressed at the difference in torque these baffles provided. I also removed the shrink wrap from the baffles before installing them, And as the video explains rewrap the fiberglass as tightly as possible and install so that they line up with the bolt holes in the baffles and pipes with a twist as you push them into the pipes.
Interesting video. I installed the V&H quiet baffles on my Fatboy a year ago, but didn't like the sound they produced at 80-100 km and just finished reinstalling the stock ones. Also, I left the plastic on the quiet baffles when I put them in thinking it would easily melt off over time. However, it turned out not to be the case and it took me an hour or so to remove each of them as the plastic melted into the packing material and stuck to the inside of the pipes causing the inner part to wedge in tight when I tried to extract them.
I was not sure at the time so I elected to remove the plastic, glad I did. Sounds like you had a hell of a time removing it. As far as the baffles go, I wound up removing the cap on the quiet baffles. It defeated the purpose of getting them, but just felt too restricted to me. Thanks for the comment.
Shawn Hedges probably why they sounded bad
I just put the quiet battles in my pipes and I removed the plastic and fiberglass. For the same reason
hi Shawn, after how long you changed back to the stock one? I installed quiet baffles with plastic on weeks ago, it’s impossible to take them out now…😅
@@Nanyewu - I had the quiet baffles in for about a year before swapping them out for the stock ones. The quiet baffles were a bugger to remove. Took lots a patience. I had good success using a stout wire coat hanger with the end curved back to make a small hook I could use to get a hold of the inside of the baffles. Worth the effort in the end though.
With open with open baffles, sounds dirty, like it wants to go off-road. Vicious. Very nice, ride safely brother.
All three sound good to me.
2 years later but hey, quiet baffle has a nicer sound for me.
Took out the higher pitches of the stock baffles which I liked, just wound up being too restrictive for my tastes.
vance & hines say leave the plastic on the baffles they say that it melts over the insulation and will not hurt the pipes or baffles !! makes the baffles go right in also your baffles may be hard to take out because of the carbon buildup if your pipes are older but just take your time . I wish he show you how he took off his chrome heat shield ! on some bikes they harder to get off
Straight pipes are the best pipes
Best review of these pipes and baffles on CZcams. So which baffle did you prefer?
Wow, thanks for that! I stayed with the quiet baffle, but because I can't leave things alone I wound up modifying it. I took the caps off the end, (which pretty much defeats the purpose of getting them in the first place). They just felt too restrictive and that bugged me. I'll post another video once I get a chance and you can hear them.
Texas Harley Rider : Great. I'm looking forward to your next video. I just bought the same pipes w/ standard baffle. I'll be putting them on my 07' WG this weekend.
Put the pipes on this weekend. I really like the sound of the stock baffles!
@@perfect7liberty Glad to hear it. I liked them but wanted to try and deepen the tone a bit. That and I like to tinker too much!
I have the vance and hines big shots with the stock baffles. When I first fired up the bike,I thought there were no baffles in it at all! Incredibly loud to my ears. Will be installing the quiet baffles soon. Thanks for the video.👍
Too late now but you can leave the plastic in. It helps with the fiberglass not coming off during installation and burns away in minutes once you fire up your engine
Never too late for a comment, will help someone down the road.
@@texasharleyrider7424 true. I might add, somewhere i saw a fellow rider actually wrapping a bit more tape around the fiberglass to make the whole thing tighter and easier to slide and install. As explained, everything burns away very rapidly. On the other hand with only the fiddly tape provided you run the risk of the whole fiberglass falling off the piece as you insert it and then yes, you're in trouble
Luckily on my set I didn't run into any problems. Once started in the pipe, they went in without issue.
Thanks. Just got me a set and was wondering if I can keep plastic on. Makes for an easier install. 👍🏼
quiet baffles are okay. subtle but has that deep rumble..
Great video! Beautiful DWG
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Do not remove anything from the baffles. They are designed that way. Trust me or call Revzilla or VH.
5 years later and not a single comment about your fork tubes being bent?
They are not bent, it’s the GoPro setting. But yes no one saw that. Good eye! 🤙
@@texasharleyrider7424 right on, glad to hear you weren't riding around like that! Where are you at in Texas?
About 2.5 hours north of DFW, by Wichita Falls.
@@texasharleyrider7424 Texas is a trip. Most people don't realize just how vast it really is. I'm centex/hill country; you're about 5 hours north of me.
@@TXRed1836 Right on. Thats down around the twisted sisters area I think?
Did you ended up posting the video were you take out the cap from the q baffles? i have the super q ones.... not good! Very, VERY restrictive. Sounds good on medium/high revs, sounds like crap on idle.
No I didn’t make a video on the caps. There was nothing to it, other than removing the heat shields to get the baffles out. Had 3 tac welds holding them on. Used a 4 1/2” grinder with a cutoff wheel, made quick work of them.
No heatshields? V&H? Nice bike bro! Keepya knees in the breeze, & be safe! Seeya.
I just had them off to swap out the baffles. Easier to make the video.
@@texasharleyrider7424 *I wasn't being critical brother, I have '97 heritage with V&H longshots, and have never had the shields off, so it struck me as sorta odd that yours appeared discolored. I'd like to quieten mine down a bit, so your post was very informative and helpful towards my decision on which way to achieve it, so thank you. Keep yer knees in the breeze! Seeya.
Didn’t take it that way, ride safe 🤙
Be safe my brother ✌️
i personally like the humble rumble from the quiet baffles! Both sounds good though. Did you notice a difference in back pressure? More torque or no?
Going on feel alone, there was a bit more back pressure but when getting on the throttle if felt too restrictive for me. I really didn't notice a difference in torque.
Could be from the restricted airflow ? Do you have a tuner on it?
Running an FP3, it's does ok but not a huge fan of it, has lots of connectivity issues (for me anyway). The baffles have a cap on the end. I wound up taking the caps off and felt much better, defeats the purpose of a quiet baffle but just couldn't handle the "feel".
What's up buddy so I just bought a used 2013 Street Bob 103 and it has a Vance and Hines Big Shot exhaust like this. the owner also gave me a box of baffles they look like the longer ones and the darker metal ones in your video are those the stock ones that come in the Vance & Hines? so I assume mine has the quieter ones in them?
Quiet baffles definitely feel too restricted... I'm having a hard time taking one out at the moment. lol
The plastic should stay on it will burn off otherwise the packing wolf life and you will see particles coming out your exhaust been there done that
I had the quiet baffs in when i took bike to get tuned t elimante decel popping. when the tuner tried to probe the exhaust the quiet baffles were completely broken in peices. So he used some universal shorty baffles. pretty much open headers. he tuned it with those. decel pop gone and more power but the pipes are too damn loud and crashy. might put the stock ones back in to quiet it down a tidge
So the caps were broke or the baffle itself? That’s crazy, how long had they been in?
@@texasharleyrider7424 quiet baffles were broken in peices. 4k miles, like they just deteriorated. I put the orginal VH baffles in today. it wasnt as easy as I thought. I had a real hard time with the covers and the clamps and I could not get the allen screw to thread into the baffle so i had to drill out the baffle thread hole and run the screw thru it and put a nut on the inside of it. took way longer than I anticipated. supriced I didnt scratch the hell out of stuff
@@el-hp1lj Yeah, it’s a pain to swap them out due to the heat shields. That’s the exact reason I did the video this way lol.
Much better!!
Wow can't believe im saying this but baffles sound better
Yeah, same here. Really depends on the bike and the style of pipes. Had a 1100 shadow that was just the opposite.
The Deep bass sound is the best motorcycle sound, by far.
I measured my V&H straight shot and the diameter is 2.1” . would this baffle fit? what is the diameter of this baffle? Thanks
I measure the stock baffle that came out of my pipes and depending on how you hold the tape measure (talking about the slack in the end) , I got 2"s or just a hair over. By that I would assume they would fit in your pipes but would recommend looking them up on the Vance and Hines website just to verify. Once you do and have the correct part# definitely shop around, can sometimes find a good deal on used set on eBay or some of the harley pages on Facebook.
Texas Harley Rider Wow. Thanks for the info. definitely it would fit my pipe
yes ! but you should call vance & hines at 800-592-2529 they we help you with all your questions
sound the same to me but I would think you take the plastic off
Between the stock and quiets the sound difference is only a few decibels I believe. They got rid of the higher tones but didn’t like how restrictive they felt. Wound up cutting off the tax welds holding the caps on and left the fiberglass. Much better that way to me. As far as the fiberglass I’ve heard both but I just preferred it off. I just can’t see the plastic burning out completely and figured it could make the baffles a bit harder to take out. I like to tinker too much for that lol.
Quiet Baffles
Your stock baffel needs some packing on it.
Good video, but you were not supposed to take off the plastic!
Hind sight is 20/20. Previous baffles I've used for different bikes did not have any plastic on them. In the end it did not effect the install negatively, went in easily and have had no issues. Thanks for the comment, ride safe.
Jesus loves you !
I can’t tell the difference
It was very subtle, only few decibels. The quiets took out some of the higher pitches.
Stock sounds best
All that exhaust pipe bluing indicates that the bike is running lean. Why don’t you take care of the bike first before making videos?
Because if I didn't, then I would miss out on all the golden info you are showering on us all lol. The pipes had the bluing when I purchased it from the original owner, I assure you the bike is not running lean, in fact just a tad rich. My bikes have been well taken care of. This is a special moment, my first troll! Thanks for the comment!
@@texasharleyrider7424 it doesn't mean it's running lean anyways... it could be oil from hands or grease from the original install. Etc. Some peoples kids just like sounding cool on the internet. Lol.
@@nitsujc1 the other guy it right lol if it was what you say then the tops where its closest to the pistons wouldnt be really dark meaning it got hot and cool so many times the color is gone
Mine with a tuner and auto tuned the hell out of it before going any farther than stage one was turning blue, these pipes are so thin they are gonna discolor, they are gonna look funky. That’s why v&h made a full length heat shield on em. Doesn’t matter how well it’s tuned it’s gonna blue
Wait wait wait.... You didn't know if you weren't supposed to TAKE THE PLASTIC OFF THE BAFFLE that gets insanely hot? Hot enough to melt rubber and midget souls? Come on
I wasn't sure, they did not come with any instructions. Previous baffles I've used came with a wire holding the fiberglass on. The plastic wrap is on the fiberglass to ease installation and will burn off, not hindering the fiberglass. The pipes do in fact get extremely hot, hot enough to to melt rubber.....as far as "midget souls" I'd have to do more research, I'm not sure what a souls melting point is. Thanks for the comment.
@@texasharleyrider7424 you're from texas... I understand 😉
@@mikebronc2902 Have a good one, thanks for the view.
Texas Harley Rider turns out you are not supposed to remove anything. Ask V&H. The plastic does not make a mess bit seals the baffle in place. It is a special material.
Do not remove anything from the baffles. They are designed to have that plastic on them. They will not creat a mess. If you do not trust me call revzilla or VH.
