Marching Season Tension in Derry

Every year in Northern Ireland, both the Irish Republicans and the British Unionists build huge bonfires to celebrate their culture. Each side burns the other’s flag.
We went to the Bogside in #Derry to talk with a group of young lads calling themselves the Bogside Republican Youth. They spent all summer building this year’s bonfire, which caused controversy due to its links to the IRA and the recent violence in the area.
The biggest problem of the Bogside is not militancy though, it’s the poverty and complete lack of leadership. Derry has the highest rate of unemployment in Northern Ireland, more than twice the average. The city is also one of the most unemployed in the UK as a whole. The young lads of the Bogside have nothing to do and nowhere to go.
We filmed with them over two days as they set the bonfire alight.

When republicans build bonfires: *Reckless, young lads without jobs, disrespectful, controversial.*
When the unionists do the same thing: *Justified, for the right cause, just celebrating their heritage.*
Double standards at its finest.
True stuff
I've never heard any outsider documentary describe the unionist bonfires positively, and if they do, these documentary makers weren't among them, so what's your point? They're the first outsiders I've seen even mention the republican bonfires' existence.
But to be fair.. the kids here are young lads without jobs, being reckless, being disrespectful, and intentionally creating controversy.
Never heard anyone outside Ireland justify burning ROI flags. So I think your comment is untrue. Both are bad. It’s not dissimilar to gang culture in London. In my opinion
@@compulsiverambler1352 why should anybody with sense describe unionist bonfires positively? It reeks of sectarian hatred and justification of colonialisation. So they mentioned Republican bonfires, are we supposed to be thanking them?

Great documentary mate, worrying to see this problem looks like it will only get worse.
Brexit might cause new problems to the Northern Ireland border indeed
Ireland unfree will never be at peace.
I spoke to a northern Irish protestant here in England and he said it will go on forever, im Catholic and think it will too..
Brexit or no brexit there'll never be peace in Ireland whilst Britain still has a hand in it!
And the reason is that it’s intentional divide and rule. The decision to allow mass migration to mainland England is the same. Those of us with a deep sense of history know the reason we have massive Muslim ghettos in Bradford, Birmingham and East London is to act as a buffer between us and the state. These poor people wanting a better life end up not assimilating or integrating in sufficient numbers to get rid of their ‘other tag’. As a result they’ll always be outsiders and as their numbers grow, the tension between them and Hindus and Sikhs, or whites, will grow and then it’s Ulster 2.0. Who’s the winner? The elite who created this barrier between themselves and the rest of us. Classic divide and rule. If we’re killing each other we’re not going after them! It’s so transparent.

Don't think you need to hate Israel. I mean the country's led by a shower of murdering shitbags but that's just the same as most countries.
Unfortunately the Star of David in that specific configuration is seen as the worldwide symbol for Israel, so while it may be important in Judaism, there's no more effective way of getting the point across than by using that flag
Sometimes symbols take on a life of their own

It would be close but probably leave
@@adamender9092 yeah but like 52% but nowadays its higher
Would definitely be to stay in the Union in my opinion. Whilst Republicans want nothing more than reunification, the last thing they want is a return to violence. And therefore I do believe a small chunk of Republicans WILL vote to stay in the union, slightly turning the tides in protestant favour.
Well why don't you come here I'm sure you would be welcome
Violence has proven to be useless and hurtful to many peoples lives. The government needs to get these kids in educational programs and off the streets. Regardless of your political viewpoints, surely you can see this is pointless

the people no matter their ideology need to be educated not just because it will help their critical thinking but also because an educated man can represent their idea in a more decent and persuasive manner. they can conduct themselves appropriately which in turn will show the good side of their ideology and make it more appealing, their efforts will also be better rewarded. these kids could make fine representatives for their people and beliefs but unfortunately organisations care only for numbers and not the quality of their followers and as a result the whole objective becomes less clear and people slowly forget the goal and stay for the "fun and violence". The kids by the bonfire represent a fine idea so poorly, they look like hooligans. No wonder they are not popular. Even Lenin that represented communism and the working class wore a suit and for a reason.

Using personal anecdote is retarded, and you've clearly based your entire opinion on NI on that rather than actual accounts and studies.
The British establishment recognized sectarianism as a divisive tool to employ against the Protestant United Irishmen in Ulster and the divide and conquer method of colonial dominion was officially encouraged by the Government. Brigadier-General C.E. Knox wrote to General Lake (who was responsible for Ulster): "I have arranged ... to increase the animosity between the Orangemen and the United Irishmen, or liberty men as they call themselves. of the North. "[9]
I feel sad for Unionists, their ancestors persecuted by Anglicans yet they still see them as brothers over their own neighbours. Do you not learn about this stuff in school, or do they tell you to base your opinion on NI on "personal anecdote"? Wake up and realise you live on the island of Ireland.
