McMurray's Test | Meniscal Tear Assessment

  • -- PURPOSE --
    Assess for a meniscal tear within the knee
    -- PATIENT POSITION --
    Supine
    -- TECHNIQUE --
    ► Hold patient's knee by palpating joint line with thumb on one side and remaining digits on the other side
    ► Grab sole of foot with other hand
    ► Place the patient in maximum knee flexion
    ► Extend the knee while causing internal rotation of the tibia with the hand that is at the sole of the foot
    ► Simultaneously apply VARUS stress with the hand that is stabilizing at the knee joint line
    ► Return to maximum knee flexion
    ► Extend the knee while causing external rotation of the tibia with the hand that is at the sole of the foot and apply VALGUS stress with the hand that is stabilizing at the knee joint line
    -- INTERPRETATION OF DIRECTIONS --
    ► Lateral meniscus: Internal rotation of the tibia with VARUS stress
    ► Medial meniscus: External rotation of the tibia with VALGUS stress
    -- POSITIVE TEST --
    Pain and/or audible clicking
