I love this song. I named my daughter claire.. sadly she passed away in 1998. Through cystic fibrosis. This song makes me remember the good times. Bless you all for your comments.
I am so sorry for your loss. I pray that you will be reunited one day.

Omgoodness so sad 😔

Beautiful song for a beautiful young lady 💔
Condolence..
My daughter was born in 1974. We named her Clare because we both liked this song. She is now a happily married head teacher with her 48th birthday approaching.
My daughter was also born in 1974, May 21st. So she will be 50 and has two grandchildren.
Music in the 70s was great. Much better than today’s music.
And we were much younger.
True
Definitely
Absolutely
I love you i love your mucis
God, if we could only go back to those free and easy time.
You said it Jackie, the 1970's was the best time ever with songs like this, the music these day's are just to crazy but song's like this are just simple and beautiful. "OH CLAIR"
Je suis d’accord avec toi !
Gifted songwriter with a really distinctive voice
I was born in 1975 in a very small coal mining town in Korea. I always listened to the radio, and this song was one of those lovely tunes for me, even though I couldn't understand the English lyrics at all.
Oh the 70,s how i miss those days. No phones social media computers checking in on line e mails. Just long summer days playing all day. Gone forever !!!
We share the fortune of having grown up in the 70s
So true!😊
True I hate the new world.
Memories of long carefree summer days playing with friends and listening to the radio
Not totally gone, we have memories and the music still! ❤
My grandfather named my mother after this song. She sadly passed away just before Christmas we played this at her service and I keep coming back to it months later ❤️
Love your heart ❤️.
So sad God bless
❤
Sorry about your mom!
My mum named me after this song ❤she died 6 weeks ago. Rest in peace mum 💔
💔💔💔💔
My grand niece is a Gift from God. She is eight months old. My Claire.

Sorry for your loss

This musician does not get the critical acclaim he deserves. Popular music with great composition and sentiment.
I got dressed up in a wedding suit together with my sister for a fancy dress as a child for his song Martrimony. He was big in Ireland. My grandmother was a sullivan. Does one tear count if it means to shed tears because that is all I can manager
I named my daughter Claire because of this song. All the love I have for her is in this song…
I love Gilbert, especially this song and Alone Again Naturally
My favourite is Nothing Rhymed. ❤
The best,!
Naturally 😊
Nobody writes sweeping melodies with these beautiful chord changes anymore. My, how the art of crafting music fell through the years.
My uncle who passed with cancer was a big fan and i listen to all his great music and it reminds of the great days with god bless you uncle greg i dearly miss you everyday ❤
My mom’s name was Clair. My dad used to play the 45 when he would come home from work. I love those memories. Both my parents passed in 2021, but this song brings back happy memories and tears.
❤

I love this song
Bonito nombre tenia tu mamá y tu papá se vee que la quería mucho .
Ahora dejemos que descansen en paz.❤
Reminds me of my Mom, her name was Claire. She passed away in 2022 and was so loved
and missed every day.
Gilbert O' Sullivan is still friends with Clair the subject of this great song (you can hear her giggling at the end of the record). She is the daughter of his former agent. How wonderful to have a song dedicated to you.
I met Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (CSNY) a few years ago. She did have stunning eyes.
Memories of my mum, listening too this album of the wonderful Gilbert O’Sulvian I lost my mum when I was 20 years old 1986 I’m 55 end of this month, I’ve already lived two years longer than my lovely mum 🙏❤️❤️
so sorry....
God Bless you sweetie hold on to those precious memories
I'll be 52 next month this takes me back to my childhood
No words to describe such a beautiful song. "Clair" reminds me my chilhood...
I also lost my mom when she was only 50, she never got to see all my children. I am 64 now. Absolutely love Gilbert’s music, I managed to see him play live a few years ago, he was brilliant, if I get the chance to see him again I will. Sorry for your loss Jo.
So this song was written for Clair Mills, the 3yo daughter of Gordon Mills, O’Sullivan’s producer for whom O’Sullivan would sometimes babysit. Sadly, producer Mills disputed song rights to “Clair”, and this plus matters relating to his producing of O’Sullivan led to a lawsuit - which Mills lost entirely. Meaning Mills lost quite a bit of money over it. So despite the song having been written with the best of intentions, things were not always so rosy with its later circumstances. Still, once Clair Mills was an adult, she apparently did not hold the unpleasantness against O’Sullivan and came, publicly, to at least one of his concerts where he acknowledged her to the audience. A gorgeous song. I remember it from the early ‘70s and then the famous legal case plus all the nasty gossip surrounding it. In the end though, I think it was written with the best of intentions and expressed great affinity for a human just starting out, entirely appropriately.
WOW !! NEVER NEW THIS..THANKS LOVE THIS SONG ....MY BROTHER USED TO LISTEN TO IT ALL THE TIME.
this song clearly is a proof that there was once a time where humans where still feeling pure innocence without having any polluted and perverted thoughts like todays times.
well said.
Exactly, but i really don't care that some may read sinister overtones to the lyrics, its still that innocent and beautiful song i remember as a child and nothing can taint the sentiment when i hear it. In fact, the whole album it was taken from was pretty much as good and memorable if totally underrated and overlooked. Whether you sing along or play in the background, takes you way back to better days every time. But the sentiment of the observation - spot on and I totally agree with it.
so there still human,s in the world good i thought i was losing it. have wonderful day

I bought the 45 vinyl in 1972, and now in 2024, I still play this song. Sad tune, hits your gut, makes you feel vulnerable. I cry and feel glad to be alive. Does that make sense?
Ahh, the wonderful innocence of the 70's - it brought a tear to my eye for sure.!
Gilbert O'Sullivan, one of the greatest melodists of all time. This song reminds everyone of a moment in their life, with a touch of nostalgia.
Grazie Gilberto.l'ho scritto in Italiano .la Mia Lingua.io amo tutto della mia Italia.le cose buone intendo
Eloquently put.
"greatest melodists of all time"?? That's laying it on a bit thick!! it's a nice pop tune, but he ain't Tchaikovsky.
@@jchopra i love this song im looking the lyrics
Go see him he's touring the states he's awesome live.
Played piano keys guitar all my life. I remember playing this with my band but also in Aberdeen University Union as a student. In a corner of an old dusty room tucked away in the corner sat an out of key piano. You could hear it out near the Janitor's Office. I used to draw a bit of an audience. Memories and happy days. Played Alone Again Naturally as well.
Alone Again Naturally - a great song, so underrated!
My Mum and Dad loved this. Such lovely innocent memories.
Just leaving junior school at 13....when my Dad picked me up from school and took me home for lunch....seemed always to be playing in his car.

Why do I feel nostalgic for en era I wasn't even around to witness? Having been born in 1980 I gravitated to 60s/70s poprock in my mid teens and its still my favourite music periode!
Maybe you're an old soul.
Nothing wrong with that :-)
Thomas: because music and lyrics back then was from the heart. Creative license not canned junk.
Maybe it's because we had the best music
You gravitate cuz those were fantastic music eras especially the '70s the '60s kicked it off with a roar and a seventies was all about people emotions love and having fun
My name is Claire. So you definitely know I just l-o-v-e this happy song! Innocence, joy & laughter. Ahh... 💖

One of the best songs ever... brings tears to my eyes. It's so sweet and innocent and purely beautiful. Just stunning. My life is better for having been blessed by this song.

Rest well, Clair.
J’avais 13 ans en 72 et j’étais en pension à Villard de Lans. Des années de solitude mais aussi de belles rencontres, les filles des villages autour qui par leurs sourires nous amenaient du réconfort. Cette chanson me ramène toujours à cette époque. Merci Gilbert O’ Sullivan 🤗🙏🏻
Very impressive made and performed.O'Sullivan has such consistent music staying power.I love his music.

I grew up with this kind of music, the best times.
Takes me back to my childhood in the seventies...... I'm called Clare and I love this song ❤
Y esa espléndida risa al final🥰🎶
This is a song written, performed and sung beautifully, playfully and innocently by a singer almost totally forgotten . .
at least by me . .
The song's about a guy admiring a child, right?
It was made in 1972 long, long before all the Bundys, Dahmers and school shootings that have sickened and killed us all inside.
Gilbert O'Sullivan brings our hearts back to life and he's awesome.
Where has he been??
His music stirs up so many emotions: Sadness, laughter, anguish, admiration and a few I can't even think of.
It's an amazing and weird talent; haunting yet enjoyable.
I can't stop listening to it.
It's the closest thing to literally going back in time to your childhood and reliving the best parts of it all over again.
Please Mr O'Sullivan come out of retirement.
We need you.
He has a new album coming out in July, called Driven
I like your comment, Mr. Phillips.

I adore this sweet song. It makes me cry ever since I was little.
If I could describe this song I would describe it as a bliss of childhood innocence ,mixed with the heart of a breath taking afternoon on the heat of summer, combined with a joy of ice-cream beckoned with chocolate and blessed with a shinning pint of pure gold
Wow , what a comment ! you should be writing , G
Exactly! Well said!
M
Oh that was so beautifully poetic...whew
You should be a writer, sweetheart . The best description to this O'sullivan's gem.
I have always loved this song by Gilbert , especially the little baby laugh at the end, Pure Genius.
Love this song and beautiful.lyrics and gilbert o sullivan. Those were the days
I feel bad for the persons that doesnt know this song, it's magic and so nostalgic
I absolutely agree and it makes me mad and sad at heart when people make cruel, unwarranted comments saying Clair is a pedophile song. It's most certainly NOT. The lyrics convey a real life situation where Gilbert shows love and affection for his managers Gordon Mills three year ole daughter and Clair was very fond of her "Uncle Ray"!
This is a lovely innocent song! It's probably the only time the word "murder" makes me laugh, and the sound of a child laughing makes me tear up. It's possibly the loveliest sound in the world.
My father left my Mom When me and my brother were just babies, and married this School teacher and he had 7 more kids that he raced, and I remember him dedicating this song to the love of his life , Craribel, life can be a beach some times jajaja feel sorry for my biological father, God bless him
I Love this precious song. I have so many great memories of my childhood in the 70’s. That time was so magical for me and my siblings growing up. And the music of that era was a big part of it. I’m so blessed to have come up then. I wouldn’t change it for nothing.
So true ... we really had the very best !
Same here mate, they were great years, even if we didn't realise it at the time.
I totally agree…times were different…better, innocent, kinder..I truly miss the 70’s
You wouldn't get away with lyrics like this anymore. Different times.
That's because now everything's sexualised. Especially where children are concerned. There is no innocence left - so everything has to be "problematic".
Timeless and harmless Still relevant !!
Oh heck ! The babysitter singing this about the child!!!!
He wasn't "getting away" with anything, it is innocent, in a time when a man was allowed to express love for his little niece.
Sadly youre right
This song takes me back to my early teens, 14 or 15 then. His poster on my bedroom wall. I'm so pleased that he's still making music and is alive and well.
after hearing this tune a thousand times i finally truly listened to the lyric, and its a little freaky.
