- A song written after the progrom in Przytyk in 1938. During WWII it become an athem of fighting Jews in the Ghettos. The poet Mordechaj Gebirtig appeals to his brothers and sisters not to stand passively and watch helplessy how their town is burning but to seize what they can and put down the fire, even with their own blood.
Mordechaj Gebirtig is one of the most important names linked to Yiddish folk song tradition. With simplicity, humour and warmth, the carpenter from Cracow has created through his songs a document of Kazimierz, the Jewish district of Cracow, with its poverty, despair and misery, as well as love, happiness and hope. The Jewish world of Kazimierz disappeared with the Holocaust. Mordechaj Gebirtig suffered its fate. In 1942 he was shot by Nazis in Cracow ghette, as he was being deported to Belzec death camp.
Performed by Norwegian-Jewish actress and singer Bente Kahan, from the album Farewell Cracow. - Hudba
Haunting, it feels so modern.. Thank you for posting this historical and cultural contribution.
You are welcome, I liked sharing. :)
I think it is essential to see what could happen. One correction: We can never let anyone's towns burn again.
I do not know where I will perform it, this was not announced to me. And a big thank you for the support!
In thanks :)
My Friend Georg Ginzburg that lives in Melbourne and is 90 years old. teach to me that only exist one Race: Human been. And i believe it too. Great actress the Interpretor! Thanks for sharing it.
I am an Israeli in high school. As is an Israeli tradition, we are going to Poland to see the sites and sights, and we have learned much about WWII, as well.
On one of our ceremonies, I will perform this song. It is great, and learning it without knowing Yiddish is a challange I quite like taking. I was asked to add the part that is Hebrew translation, and I must observe that the original has a real charm to it. Hebrew sounds too pure of syllables and proper of phrasing.
This... is fantastic.
I`m from the 2nd district of vienna and when i was little they jew spoke jiddisch and like it influenced vienna dialect alot but earlier but nowadays its like not even jews speak like this here or atleast not like in public. I used to understand virtually each germanic based or austrian based languages
I was in the KZ Mittelbau-Dora when i was 16. i cried the whole day there. I jsut couldnt understand how people could do that to other people.
Beautiful, meaningful, intense. Why were comments for "Kinde Yoren" disabled? Were you deluged with hate messages? I'm glad comments are being accepted for this video. These remnants of a tradition keep the tradition going, and help us remember those who were so innocent, who gave so much, and who were lost. Thank you for all your videos.
It's exactly my thought. I would willingly comment Kinderjohren 'cause I lived just next door to the Mordechai Gebirtig's house. Every, every day I saw Gebirtig's commemorative plaque, really traumatic. And many, many times I saw Israeli youth organized groups passing by without noticing it...
Thank You
Beautiful song!
Yes, this is powerful, moving, amazing. You can watch her singing it live in 1995. (link below) Perhaps Gebirtig wrote this in 1938, but as others have noted, the pogrom in Przytyk took place on March 9, 1936. Kahan: czcams.com/video/WVxImQiKmKI/video.html
Pity this song doesn't have English subtitles.
❤🎉❤
this song is a manifest that many polish people were as antisemitic as other around the world
Kielce comes also to my mind...
wtf why do some people rate
krzychoprzytyk1 down?
the god damn pogrom Gebirtig wrote about was in 1936....

okay...thanks for explaining. Same concept I guess as most Christians even when not religious carry this as an cultural inheritage. Speaking about tradition...Well, my fathers family decided to choose the new "religion" during the Nazi regime and were therefore Nazis. My Moms family more suspicious about this new form of being. Remember lots of discussions and arguments during family festivities. Never matched. Luckily this has changed as new generation has grown up...

Not "program", but "pogrom".
It really makes me sad when certin christains i know don't accept other religions and are racist. Christians are supposed to be loving and accepting to people. Lets not forget about compassions and love for one another.
the song is beautiful even if the singer is not the best
My mother. just like my moms voice. Yiddish MOB. Revenge, 😀
I prefer Jan Peerce's version. It rips you from the gut.....
a verry welldone video (i just can´t say nice, what happend this time wasn`t nice, it was simply awfull.)
i`m german but i simply can not understand how people cuold do that. even my grandma and grandpa couldn`t.
they had a lot of jiddish friends, and from one moment to the other they were deported.
when i was a child my grandma told me, wich shop belonged to her jiddish friends.
i never bought anything in this shops, taken by friends of the ns!
So you are Polish? Or do you call yourself Jewish of Polish nationality? Or Polish of jewish background? Just curious how you consider yourself. Mixing nationality and religous belief/ background seems to manifest identity. I am German...raised in christian beliefs/ values as most Europeans and this is my identity. I can accept other forms of identity within a society as long as people contribute to the social wellbeing of a nation. Just trying to understand what is your concept of identity!?
Was ist das bitte für eine Sprache?
Das ist Yiddish
Ser Strigori danke
holy a holocaust in 1887 too.
yiddish is coming back but the writen is not
Pogrom in Przytyk was in 1936 not in 1938. I am from Przytyk and my graundmather remember that Jewish People was pour out hot wather from windows straight into Polish People. I respect Jewish People but they very often change history.
yiddish mami yiddish jerusalem mami baruch adonai kadosh kadosh kadosh amin.amin.amin miliard sory amore.jesus amin.amin.amin.
@Scotchtapeeater They may call themselves Christian, Sweetie...but can you imagine Jesus (one of "us") speaking such trash? Overcome these morons so they don't overcome you. Don't allow ignorance to distract you from your purpose.
Love and Light to you

To be honest, it was not a pogrom, it was a riot lasting less then one hour, no house was burnt.
As the Jews used first firearms, the story is very controversial.
See wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przytyk_pogrom
Nonetheless, the song itself and the performance are great.
So n Bullshit!
Was soll das denn heissen ?
