- Traditional ways of life have been changing for a long time, but in Greasewood, Arizona, NAC conductor and retired educator Mike James, Sr., is noticing medicinal plants and birds are disappearing, too. Cultural shifts away from traditional, rural life and environmental changes are all pointing back to an old story of two tricksters. Settle in for the story as we conclude our interview with Mike.

Those that were once young are now elders, and those that were elders are now gone. The loss of knowledge is profound because of this. The young are influenced by what they see and want those things. They do not see what they need for their spirit and when they are older they feel the loss of what they needed.
Agreed, it's a startling to look at everything as a whole and realize we're in that age of losing more traditionalist who were taught the last lessons before it was gone. What are your thoughts on what is currently happening with our people?

I agree with that as well. Mike mentioned that his dad and him always asked the individual money isn't how traditional practices are done. A lot of people went to them because they didn't ask for money. It was nice to hear that from him.

My mom was adopted. Ive often thought how much she resembled native americans and not the italian ancestry she claims. She is gone now but i still resonate with these slower more natural ways of living. Its truly a blessings to have a family tree and to live more in tune with nature. Leaving the shovels there.. it’s another point to leaving items where they are left as they are left there for another’s reason and are not for spectacle or souvenirs.
It’s claimed by university or museums who seek prestige that the discarded places and. Items are somehow their right to study, as if it’s NEEDED. We only need to listen to those who were raised with a value of storytelling, who know how to tell the stories of people. We do not need to dissect and hide away in basements or behind glass these items to know the story of a people. If they are gone, I can somewhat see the curiosity, yet, there needs to be respect and consideration.
Well said. I've often viewed archeology as desecration of sacred grave sites, once I grew out ot the Indian Jones indoctrination. It's everywhere.

Sounds like you talking about your Navajo Nation government they are the tricksters to you all we us and you just said that we missing plants 🪴 and other important things are also missing and ancestors had way better living within our worlds 🌎 and I beginning not to believe in today's DINE VOICE and what they talk about isn't in line our relationship with great heart mother earth and I feel that today's DINE with respect ❤❤
Governments around the world will never align with citizens expectations. The plants leaving along with the wildlife is concerning but I recently spoke with another gentleman and he mentioned that our community doesn't speak dine' to the plants anymore and is one of the reasons why they are leaving. Hmm 🤔 interesting where he talks about how the grandma told him how to dress the people when they past away; I assumed that's what he meant. So my question is, isn't that how the so call trickster works to benefit itself, meaning it wants you to do the opposite of what it should be?😱

I don't know what your talking about. We still have wild navajo tea, onions, and plants for meds. I also hear your weird tradition. Maybe you just live in a different area. So I wish you wouldn't say that. Then you said you were told.😮
