      Hello 157dodgers.
      Yes only 10%-15% of Tacomas are produced in a manual transmission. When I bought my truck, there were 3 people behind me ready to buy it. It's similar to the Pro model Tacomas, "if you know what it is you will buy it."

    Dude, don't coast out of gear. (If you are trying to increase fuel economy) Out of gear, the engine computer will inject fuel to maintain idle. If in gear with foot off the gas pedal, no fuel will be injected /burned as the engine is pushed in rpm by rolling down the road. Use down shift as well. Any time you down shift, fuel is of. And you save your brakes too.

      I keep our plane at Paine Field so I'm very familiar with the Everett area. I'm glad to hear you're please about your truck, I'll be uploading a new video this week that explained a Technical Service Bulletin for Manual Transmission Clutch Pedals. It was replaced under warranty; and I recommend keeping it in mind if you have troubles with your clutch pedal. If you need any accessories for your truck, I can arrange to have Micheal's Toyota install them. Ask for Monroe in aftermarket accessories and tell him Dean sent you.

      I test drove a '19 trd off road taco in the summer. It's not like my BMW 550i in manual, but it's a pickup truck. So, finally I'm ready to buy one. The only thing is, all '19 higher end (only one tdr pro left$$$$) are sold out with manual trans . The '20 trd off road is super nice in manual and in cememt color (my fav)... $750 customer cash on '20s and $1750 on '19s, currently. I like the upgraded interior and led headlights. The '19s you can get for a decent price, but availability is limited.

      Hello @@mmarmrcz6770
      I would absolutely recommend the '20 Toyota Tacomas has they have the upgrade headlights but also the adjustable power driver seat. The only downside to the '19 is one its old but the seat height can't be adjusted. My recommendation to you is to get a '20 and make sure it has leather seats. Leather seats make a huge difference especially if you are use to European cars. I didn't do leather and I regret it; the dealership gave me a loaner car with leather and I love it. Do not worry about the $1000 savings as these tacoma hold their value better than any other vehicle. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      20 mpg with 33' tires and a 3' leveling kit. I drive conservatively. If you want better gas mileage I would highly recommend a cold air intake with a performance exhaust. The gear ratio is different between the automatic and manual; so that's why the manual gets better gas mileage.

    Everyone's overlooking another feature of the MT: There's a sunglasses holder up near the rearview mirror on the MT!! On the AT, the crawl control knobs are up there. It's actually really nice to have there. Plus you get a manual transmission which what you get when you want to drive a truck instead of have it drive you. You can thank the gear ratio in the manuals, and as for engine braking, i only use it when towing or with load on the truck. If you downshift constantly in day to day driving you will wear your clutch faster (more expensive than pads and rotors), even when properly rev matching.

    As a manual Frontier Pro4x owner, I agree with all of your reasoning. I've always preferred manuals, mainly for the added driving engagement and improved fuel economy over autos. A lot of people think I'm full of shit when I say O get better mileage than the auto, but it's because you can shift for efficiency or performance...I typically shift for efficiency. I did considered a Tacoma before I purchased my Frontier back in 2017, but the Tacoma's price is just too high to swallow. I have always felt that the Tacoma is absurdly overpriced. The Frontier is reliable, durable, simple, cheap and easy to maintain and I'm happy with it, but I do wish it was more refined and equipped with better electronics. It's a solid truck for sure, but you can definitely tell it's an old school design. I may consider switching to a manual TRD Off-Road when my truck is about 5 yrs old if I can get a decent deal, mainly because I want a 6 ft bed.

      Hello D LG.
      I'm always in a high gear when driving, if I'm driving 30 mph I'll have it in 6th gear. It's more effort to shift but I get best gas mileage. Sometimes I'll even skip a gear depending on the situation. Only down side to manuals is having to constantly shift in stop and go traffic, leg might get tired. And yes, the Tacoma are over priced but retain their value.

    With the manual you do get a lower dif gear ratio over the auto, so the more weight you put on the truck and the larger tires will have a much smaller impact on fuel economy and acceleration. If your buddy changed from his 3.90:1 gears to 4.88:1 he will notice a world of difference.

    Anyone have any ideas? - I have a 2021 TRD Off-Road. Bought it brand new here in San Antonio. Around 3,000 miles I started noticing a “clunk”/jerking sensation when I’m driving in 5th and Big Time in 6th gear.
    When I let off the accelerator, then resume speed (i.e. giving it gas again), I’ll feel the clunk or jerk. I took it to Alamo Toyota where I purchased it. Was told they checked our the drivetrain components, engine mounts, etc. Was told it was “normal”.
    I eventually took it to Cavender Toyota. Had the service advisor take a ride with me on the highway. She felt it right away. They had it for hours. Said they even called Toyota engineering and I was told it was a “characteristic of that drivetrain”.
    I find it hard to believe that Toyota, a company with brilliant engineers, would design these awesome trucks, but “well, we just can’t figure out how to get rid of that “clunk” or jerking sensation.
    I realize manual transmissions are getting rarer by the minute. Has ANYONE else had this issue? This is my 5th vehicle with a manual transmission. I don’t ever recall having a clunk or jerking sensation when I pushed on the accelerator after having my foot on it.
    Love this truck, but it’s mentally frustrating feeling that clunk. Appreciate any feedback or input. Thanks again.

      90% of people will say automatic is the best but now that Toyota using clutch start cancel, it allows you to not roll back when you do not want too. I've used it a few times in start on very steep inclines, traffic is terrible in the city. Thank you for commenting.

    I just bought my first Tacoma ever in December. It’s a 2022 trd sport. I didn’t like it at first because I had come from a f150. But it’s really growing on me now. I’ve been tossing around the idea of ordering a 2023 Tacoma with the 6speed. I enjoy a standard transmission, my car I drive everyday is a 5 speed. I just don’t like how the Tacoma automatic transmission shifts. I feel it’s very lazy and likes to shift very quick. I rarely pull a trailer and if I do it’s 1000LBS maximum and I don’t off-road. I’m still thinking about the 6 speed.

    • @pentzwerks
      @pentzwerks  Před 4 lety +1

      Hello Hex.
      The manual transmission do not have the crawl control. Crawl control is a good edition to the performance of the automatic Tacomas. If you know how to drive a manual tacoma you should not need crawl control. The manual transmissions offers full control over your truck when on road and off road. Let me know if you have any other questions. It all depends on how well you know how to drive a manual truck off road. Automatics are different easily to drive off road and require less effort. If you are no confident while driving a manual I would highly recommend an automatic. I myself will not buy another manual transmission tacoma as I commute in stop and go traffic and I'm simply tired of driving a manual. On the weekends I love driving a manual transmission.

    You should drive with a vacuum gauge, RPM is not the sole consideration for economy. I know you believe you're being conservative by driving at 45 in 6th but you'll pull higher vacuum by leaving it in 3rd or 4th and having more torque to the wheels. More vacuum directly correlates to better economy.

    @donkyuhbuhts540 Před 5 lety

    This is slightly debatable.
    1. The notion that you save money on "brakes" by engine braking is somewhat subjective. Engine braking will (obviously) put more wear and more load on your engine causing it to fail sooner. Brakes and tires are all cheap things to come buy in comparison to piston rings and bearings.
    2. Saying that replacing your clutch is cheaper then replacing your transmission is somewhat true depending on if your doing the work, if your shifting/engaging your clutch correctly, and if your braking in your new clutch correctly. Remember you have to disconnect the tranny to replace the clutch (and flywheel) everytime, which means throughout the lifetime of the truck you'll be doing that a few times.
    All that being said every car I've owned has been a manual and if you can do the work your self, AND drive / shift the car properly without burning the clutch all the time it's totally and completely worth it.

Remember the most "cost effective" thing isn't always the best way of doing things. Just some things to think about is all.

    • @DylanGalman
      @DylanGalman Před 5 lety

      I agree! I have a 2018 Off-road and the auto is horrible. I even bought the Shiftsense Pro, which is a device that tuned the shifting and lessens the downshifting, but that was a gimmick. It really does no different then putting the truck in ECT PWR mode, it just holds hears longer. In Cali, I cruise at 80 and going up hills when it's in 6th, it drops from 79,78,77,76 then it drops to 5th, and still...75,74,73, and then it drops to 4th and it's revving at like 3,500 rpm, it's so bad and I hate it!
      I'm saving up for the OVtune, because at that point you can just put the truck in S mode and it will stay in whatever gear you put it in, even if you are going 40 mph in 6th gear, it will hold 6th gear the whole time.
      As for your thoughts on the Ranger, I wouldn't do it. The Ranger has more torque, but it still isn't enough to push it up the hills because it has a 10 speed, which is crazy for a 4 cylinder truck. I would invest the money into the tune, and maybe a couple performance mods to increase the torque output of the truck, and maybe even a regear in the future if you put larger tires and a lift.

I do not think Toyota did a good job with your gear ratio for the automatic transmission. Buy a 2019 or a 2018 Tacoma (left over stock at a dealership, and get a discount). Let me know what you think and what you've decided. A good option might be to go with a Chevy Colorado with the diesel engine in it! I was a 2016 MT sport and won’t to get the fox shocks that are meant for the 0-2” lift because I want to keep it closer to stock high and won’t have to get the new control arms. I would also not want to change the springs in the rear because I very rarely have anything that heavy in the bed. Do you see any problems that could come from this? Or do you have any other recommendations?

    • @pentzwerks
      @pentzwerks  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello Carter Jones.
      You do not need to replace the upper control arms until you go with an extended travel suspension, fox stock offers a factory replacement which might be great for you. I would stand with a coil over, and opt out of the reservoir suspension as it'll be cheaper. You will not need to get a new leaf pack.
      Order the Fox 2.5 or Bilstein 5100 front and you can leave the rear shocks. I only put the add-a-leaf in the rear so the truck would be completely leveled at 3 inches all around. If you only want 2 inches, then you should be level without replacing the rear shocks.

      Hello@@carterjones8312.
      The sway bar spacer kit will be included in your Fox suspension, do not use a aftermarket spacer kit. If the kit isn't in the box then contact Fox directly. I used an aftermarket spacer kit thinking Fox would not include one; then had $1350 in damages because of it. The bolt came loose from the spacer and the sway bar came loose and ripped the abs line and CV boot. It lead to a new front axle, new abs harness and cv boot on the drivers side. Once I put the Fox spacer kit on, everything was fine. I ended up selling my suspension due to the $5000 in damages it caused to my truck. If I were to do it all over again, I would have only replaced the front suspension with coil overs and left the UCA alone.

    Simply put, the 2nd & 3rd gen Tacoma's with automatics are geared to high. This combined with all the electronically controlled crap Toyota has added is a hindrance to the drive ability of these trucks. The time has not yet come that all these "goodies" will work as designed so all you have to do is flip a switch and presto you have all this taking the place of driver savvy. Changing your gears to 4.88 or 5.29,(depending on tire size) would help tremendously. Then your automatic trans would shift much better overall and you would have better overall performance and gas mileage.

    Too bad the 2020 tacoma still uses the same powertrain with the same power. If i was the chief engineer then i would drop in the 3.5 from the current Camry and 8-speed from the land cruiser for better pickup and better fuel economy. Also keep the 6-speed manual for those who wanna drive for fun.

      Hello The Unknown.
      All would be good if Toyota took a 2.0 4 cylinder Diesel with supercharger gave it a 8-speed transmission. Best fuel economy, more reliability of the diesel, better driving experience. Toyota do not change things very quickly and that's why their cars last longer. Less things change, less problems.

      Hello @@TradingFeline.
      I'm not saying it's impossible, you'll have to spec "order" the car from the factory. It's more expensive to do this instead of buying right off of the lot. Nothing compares to Toyota reliability. It's difficult to find manuals with a long bed configuration.

    • @pentzwerks
      @pentzwerks  Před 5 lety

      Hello @@Xiferr
      The bed size in a mid size truck and full size truck is different. A full size truck would be a GMC 1500-3500 or Dodge which has a 6ft bed (short bed) and 8 ft bed (long bed). In a mid size truck (Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colordeo, Ford Ranger) the bed length is much small in length and width. The Toyota Tacoma short bed is 5ft and the long bed is 6ft. Basically a short bed of a full size truck is as long as the long bed of a tacoma. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @pentzwerks
      @pentzwerks  Před 3 lety

      Hello SIMON KHACHATRYAN
      I average 18mpg-20mpg, and that’s without factoring in the larger 285 tires. The manual transmissions have a different gear ratio than the automatics. In addition you said, ‘5 speed’ and the new 3rd generations have six gears. Say what you will; but that’s the mpg I get because I’m good at driving a manual.

    • @confidentlocal8600
      @confidentlocal8600 Před 3 lety

      It's not that the automatic is "smarter." It has much taller gearing overall and is programmed to keep the engine at the lowest speed possible all the time. This obviously improves fuel economy, but at the expense of performance and drivability. A manual with the same ratio set as an automatic will get better fuel economy because of lower parasitic loss. In the case of the Tacoma, the gearing is lower with the manual, so highway fuel economy is expected to be a bit lower. But the numbers are all based on a government test cycle and are only somewhat related to real-world results.

      @pentzwerks  Před 5 lety

      Hello Toyotakurtis.
      How many miles are on your 2018 Tacoma? What tires do you have? If you want better gas mileage, you can add a cold air intake and an exhaust. When I had my MBRP exhaust on I got close to 20 on average which is extremely good. I test drove the automatic and I was not impressed. In the future, I might go with the chevy Colorado in diesel (averages like 23-30 mpg) with duratac tires.

    • @toyotakurtis

      Stryker Seattle, I have 285 KO2 BFGs, I am at 11,000 miles right now. I also mainly drive in town but did take a trip to Colorado and was pushing 75 mph which did not help with getting very good mpgs. I have not been a very big fan of cold air intakes, the filters and change of the box just does not seem to work as well as the factory. I do like more free flow exhaust so long as it is not to loud. But that will only happen after my stock exhaust wears out. I have been driving only manuals for the past 24 years. I looked at the Chevy Colorado but it was an automatic, which was a deal breaker. My last car was a VW TDI 6 speed. Loved the car but the VW recall made it a no brained to sell it back for more than I paid for the car. Thank you for your video.

      Hello@@toyotakurtis.
      When I tow a sullair 185 diesel air compressor I get 14 mpg, and when I'm driving over 70 mph I'll get like 15.5. My falken tires are lighter than KO2, so that might be a factor. The TDI will get the best gas mileage, I'm actually looking at a BMW Diesel Wagon right now to replace my Tacoma. Driving a manual in stop and go traffic is become very irritable especially in seattle.
