- On November 14th 2021 catastrophic mud and rock slides affected several regions of British Columbia, Canada following heavy rain down pours called "atmospheric rivers". This amazing weather phenomenon is extremely destructive as it drops gigantic amounts of rain in a short time and aligned in a stretch. Wikipedia defines an atmospheric river as a
"narrow corridor or filament of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere. Other names for this phenomenon are tropical plume, tropical connection, moisture plume, water vapor surge, and cloud band. Atmospheric rivers consist of narrow bands of enhanced water vapor transport, typically along the boundaries between large areas of divergent surface air flow, including some frontal zones in association with extratropical cyclones that form over the oceans. Pineapple Express storms are the most commonly represented and recognized type of atmospheric rivers; they are given the name due to the warm water vapor plumes originating over the Hawaiian tropics that follow various paths towards western North America, arriving at latitudes from California and the Pacific Northwest to British Columbia and even southeast Alaska." - wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_river
This in turn then causes vegetation and rocks to be pulled by gravity through loosen terrain due to wet conditions and up to 100mm of rain sometimes falling in a 24h period. In this case, a flood or wave of rocks and stones spilled from the nearby mountain across the road and onto the yard of a house, missing it by meters on Majuba Hills Road in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. In other cases, giant trees can be counted in hundreds where they amass in piles with broken branches and torn off bark. Aerial footage provides a better understanding of what nature is capable of and people working to clear it back to order. Heavy machinery like backhoes and bulldozers are used to push back debris and make the residential area livable again.
