As a Mexican American Chicano who speaks Spanish and English and who loves learning the Bible more deeply, I would often go to Hebrew or Greek to find a deeper meaning of words pretty amazing how deeper of meaning words can get!
I personally don't use the message version BUT I completely understand that feeling of a new Bible AND comparing it to other versions. God is so good and his word is AWESOME!

STEER CLEAR! The Message is not an actual translation of the Bible. It's just made by some guy who wanted to make his own Bible version, without any care for whether the text therein is accurate to the original. It's literally just "hey I'll make it in my own words", and a lot of the verses sound silly. As a result, you may unknowingly be ingesting false doctrine by reading The Message. Genesis 1:1-2 in The Message: "First this: God created the Heavens and Earth-all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss." Notice how it uses a lot of words that aren't even present in any other translations. "Soup"? "Bottomless"? "Inky"? The author of The Message said: “I just kind of let go and became playful. And that was when the Sermon on the Mount started. I remember I was down in my basement study, and I did the Beatitudes in about ten minutes. And all of a sudden I realized this could work.” But the Bible is NOT intended to be read playfully. Do research on The Message translation. It's not a good Bible, at least if you're a practicing Christian.

This is totally reasonable since he isn’t treating it like it’s actually the word of God. This is because translations fall on a spectrum, ranging from word-for-word to thought-for-thought. A word-for-word translation may be so literal that the intended meaning is changed when we read it in English. A thought-for-thought translation relies more on the translator's choices and may differ from other thought-for-thought translations, but can be more accurate. I don't know which translation is the best. My study Bible is in NRSV, at least. Apparently that is the one that academics use. My study Bible is called "NRSV, Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible: Bringing to Life the Ancient World of Scripture". I got the Kindle version. It really helps to understand the culture that the Bible was written in. For example, when you read Genesis in this Bible, God "creates" things by speaking them into existence: "Let there be X". But there is an article in the study Bible that tells you the Hebrew word for "create" is "bara". And the ancient near eastern culture viewed existence as a functional sort of thing. So if something didn't have a function, they didn't view that thing as existing. Now Genesis 1:1-2 makes much more sense. The Earth was formless and void! It had no function! Then God gave form to it (possibly by a force such as gravity). This lines up a lot better with science than the young-earth creationist view. "Formless and void" could be how scientists believe Earth was before it solidified. (particles floating in space)

😌 I love the smell of my bible pages when I read the Word because for a moment I’ll stop reading and smell the pages and it will smell physically like the pages of an old book but I hope over time I will smell something better.
