in which i talk all about being a library page. please let me know if you have any other questions! follow me! / taylor-edwards look at me! / spinning.rims
Currently a page and I like it, but I think I'm ready to move on. It's a really physical job and sometimes even stressful. But it's so fun to make the library look neat and get in a few steps. It's so repetitive, but I try to make it a game by finding damaged materials on the shelf and other silly stuff I do. ;) What you said at 3:38 is so true. Sometimes I even have to help the library assistants and supervisors find things because I know where stuff is.
As someone who's been writing a novel featuring a cast that works in a library, I weep as I realize I've been calling them 'clerks' this entire time. And I've worked in a library. Guess who's about to fix their manuscript! Again! 😭
That's how it is in my novel! Though it's not only hectic, they're _severely_ understaffed due to rumors about their management making people not want to work there. Which would explain why they just hire the protagonist the day after he applies and have everyone train him 'as they go along'. Glad to see I'm at least on point with the chaos. These kids rarely get weekends off lmao
OMG I wanna be a library page! It seems like a perfect job for booklovers! Well, I'd be happy for any job in a place with books xD I don't think we have that position.. I had never heard of it and there aren't so many libraries in Italy :/
+Frannie Pans Dreamcatcher yessss it's such a nice environment to work in. and yeah, libraries are the one thing the US does well; our wages and healthcare are all messed up but we have lots of public libraries!
I have my first job interview in a couple days and it's for a library page position. I really hope I get it, it's the perfect job for me (I don't get to read as much as I want to because Junior year of high school is really taking its toll lol)
I love this term 'Library Page'! I had to look it up (yes) I thought it may be a joke!🙃as in Australia the positions are library assistants. Library Page is much more interesting!
I felt like watching this again and the first thing that popped in my head when you said it’s the best job you’ve ever had is “but what about being the owner of ye olde rock shoppe”? Lmao
2:35 So honest and funny! Page "aptitude test" this week! As a Master Organizer I know my alphabet and my decimals, but a little research can't hurt. I've watched a few slow and dry presentations, but your presentation style is excellent. (PS: I think that Hayden Young likes you). Had a wonderful career in Museums and Communications before being a long-term stay-at-home Mom. But will head to a school library when I am done with my studies. Yeah Books!
+Quisyfrottesypique thank you so much and good luck with your aptitude test! I'm sure you'll do great, especially if you're taking the time to study! a page is a great job for a mom; I'm sure you'll love it :) p.s. "hayden" is one of my best friends and he loves to comment on these videos, haha!
+T. Reads Update: I got the job! I think that my flawless sorting helped (bowing gesture) and my great interview skills. I feel like I am heading in the right direction.
It's great to hear how much you love your job! Thanks for the insight as well. I always wondered how certain parts of libraries work. Do you know how circulation of book requests work? I've always been curious about that.
ok! so this could very well depend on which cataloging/lending program a library uses; I'm not quite sure. but at my library, holds are placed on a specific item in the catalog. what I mean by that is that the library could own maybe 5 copies of a popular book, but the hold is placed on one specific copy, and the patron must wait for that book to be returned. unfortunately that means that a patron could hypothetically be on hold for a book waiting to be returned when there is a copy available on the shelf. I don't quite know the reasoning behind this, but I'm sure there must be some kind of logic.
I have an interview and I need help preparing I have Autism so can someone tell me exactly the questions they would be asking and and exactly how I can answer them sure I can tweak it to match me but I need to be utterly prepared or else I will fail because my social skills are not great. While interview are easy for neurological people I have to script it and study it exactly in order to succeed.
Hi! I'm going to an interview as a library page and I was informed there would be an aptitude test of sorts. Mainly on the Dewey Decimal system and my alphabetizing skills. What exactly about the Dewey Decimal system am I going to be tested on? For example, do I need to brush up on my history of the Dewey Decimal system?
my best guess is that it will be on the literal decimals, i.e. can you put them in the correct order as they would be on the shelves? I haven't heard of page tests including anything more involved than that, but if you want to maybe scan the wiki page on the dewey decimal system I suppose it wouldn't hurt. best of luck! :)
the optional solitude is a blessing, honestly! I'm still on the fence about my future plans. an MLS would be a lot of schooling that I don't know I'm ready for.
I worked as a page for six years until i quit recently. I remember googling on it beforehand and there was literally nothing. I see there's some stuff here and there now.
+jjsan27 I'm the same! I googled the position when I was invited to take the qualification test, and there was absolutely nothing. thankfully I got some pointers from a friend who had also been a page!
I am currently studying library science and am 2 semesters away from a bachelor's degree, but no matter what I do, my local library just will not hire me on as a library page. They'll hire junior high and high school students, but not me. I was wondering if you had any advice that might be able to help me get hired.
honestly that's so weird to hear! granted, I've only worked at one library, but we hire pages of any age or education level (except for that we require a HS diploma). the only thing I can think of would be following up with your application in person, and requesting an audience with whoever goes over the applications to explain that, yes, you may not be in high school or junior high, but you're still capable of doing the job, and that this is an avenue you'd very much like to pursue. good luck with your schooling! :)
for the most part mine was a basic interview for an entry-level job. do you work well with others? name a few accomplishments or how you worked to overcome a challenge? do you have any experience or knowledge that could help you in this position? but then also have answers for a favorite book and a most recent read and why you thought it was good. good luck!
Can I ask what questions did they ask you for the interview? My library has a library page position open, and they say the only requirement is a HS diploma. However they say the interview will ask questions about our oral communication skills, customer service skills, decimal filing system, and cash handling. I have no experience in customer service, cash handling, or decimal filing system, so how will I know how to answer a question on those topics?
my interview was like any other job interview. I was asked pretty generic questions about ambition and leadership and stuff like that. if they do ask you about aspects of the job you don't have experience with, I would relate it back to your ability to pick up skills quickly and/or your willingness to learn new skills (i.e. "I don't have experience with customer service, but I'm naturally good with others and I'm sure I'd pick up customer service skills very quickly!") good luck! :)
hi, I don't think the specifications of the test are that regulated. I can tell you my experience: it was maybe 10 or 15 minutes, definitely multiple choice, and I think the passing score was 70%? but not everyone who passed was ultimately hired.
You basically have to put numbers in numerical order. So they will give you 325.45, 322.65, and 679.009 and you have to put them in order. Its very easy and its what you will be doing in the library itself. Ive been working there since September and have an interview for a full time promotion next week to be a library assistant. So good luck to all of you :D best job I ever had
Wear "sensible" clothes, like your mama always said - leave the beach attire and fun clothes at home (no cut-offs or garish t-shirts or with names or Company I.D.s)...leave that for off-work time. Plain t-shirt and pants are fine.
oh no! i'm really sorry to hear that. the rest of the staff at my library are uncommonly nice; it's kind of shocking to hear that you've had such a poor experience :(
You do well enough and have the luck to do extra work, it will pay off. Did shelving for 10 yrs, but got to sub for another job at the Library - now I have that job since the one who did it retired. Don't give up - see if there's extra to do......I don't know what Library you work, but there's no excuse for being treated that way!
Sounds great! Looks like helping folks which is up my ally.

I love your name 😭

we can be pretty flexible with how we refer to each other! sometimes the place is so hectic that all titles go out the window.
That's how it is in my novel! Though it's not only hectic, they're _severely_ understaffed due to rumors about their management making people not want to work there. Which would explain why they just hire the protagonist the day after he applies and have everyone train him 'as they go along'.

I had no idea what a library page was- really interesting, and hooray for enjoying your job! :)
+A Hermit's Progress it's funny because i didn't know what a page was before i applied for the job! thank you!
I work at a library to! Its so much fun😄
Hi Victoria
I got a job as library page! I start the 20th and I'm so excited!
that's awesome! I hope you love it as much as I do!
You know what else is cute as hell? YOU
not untrue

+T. Reads also Taylor why did you put my name in quotations
+T. Reads "Taylor"

It's great to hear how much you love your job! Thanks for the insight as well. I always wondered how certain parts of libraries work. Do you know how circulation of book requests work? I've always been curious about that.
absolutely, thank you! can I ask you to clarify your question a little bit? are you talking about book holds/books on reserve?
Yes, I am referring to book holds.
ok! so this could very well depend on which cataloging/lending program a library uses; I'm not quite sure. but at my library, holds are placed on a specific item in the catalog. what I mean by that is that the library could own maybe 5 copies of a popular book, but the hold is placed on one specific copy, and the patron must wait for that book to be returned. unfortunately that means that a patron could hypothetically be on hold for a book waiting to be returned when there is a copy available on the shelf. I'm starting as a childrens page at my local library tomorrow :)
that's so awesome! I hope you love it as much as I do!
i got a job and im doing a physical and fingerprint and stuff like that and im still not sure when i start but i got hired so woohoo
Hello
I applied once when I was 16. Ended up getting a job in retail instead. Oh how my life would have been different.
hi! amazing video!! I applied for a job as a library page a couple days ago. How long did it take for you to hear back? :)
Excellent!
I have an interview and I need help preparing I have Autism so can someone tell me exactly the questions they would be asking and and exactly how I can answer them sure I can tweak it to match me but I need to be utterly prepared or else I will fail because my social skills are not great. I was a Page until the very day I became a Librarian. It was such a great job and I miss the solitude sometimes! Any future library plans?
the optional solitude is a blessing, honestly! I'm still on the fence about my future plans. an MLS would be a lot of schooling that I don't know I'm ready for.
I have a civil examination with the City & County of San Francisco for the Library page position and do you have any examples that I can study on
How did your exam go?? I'm taking mine for San Francisco in a few weeks eeek
we, the library page DO ALL THE WORK !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I worked as a page for six years until i quit recently. I remember googling on it beforehand and there was literally nothing. I see there's some stuff here and there now.

I'm going to be interviewing tomorrow for a page job at my library and I'm kinda nervous. Any advice or tips on questions they might ask?
for the most part mine was a basic interview for an entry-level job. do you work well with others? name a few accomplishments or how you worked to overcome a challenge? do you have any experience or knowledge that could help you in this position? but then also have answers for a favorite book and a most recent read and why you thought it was good. good luck!
I am a retiree and are their many retirees working as a Page?
The name Page makes me feel like it involves magic, guess i'm playing too many RPG games
haha, no, the first time I heard of the job position I thought it was a book pun!
Hi great video! can you explain what a cutter number is?
thank you! unfortunately I don't have experience with cutter numbers because my library exclusively uses dewey :(
Can I ask what questions did they ask you for the interview? My library has a library page position open, and they say the only requirement is a HS diploma. Excellent advice - for this and many other jobs! Good on you!
Do you work full time and part time and do librarians and library pages get health insurance coverage?
I work part time and because of that I'm not eligible for benefits. the full time librarians at my library definitely do get them however
Saw the thumbnail and was like u don't wear glasses don't lie
How to apply for this position when u don't have prior experience
What is the duration of the test? Is it multiple choice questions? What is the passing score?
hi, I don't think the specifications of the test are that regulated. I can tell you my experience: it was maybe 10 or 15 minutes, definitely multiple choice, and I think the passing score was 70%? but not everyone who passed was ultimately hired.
Thank you, great video! Did you need college training?
thank you! nope, it's an entry level position and we hire a lot of high schoolers for it!
Do you have to dress professionally when taking the page test?
I think, generally speaking, it wouldn't hurt! I think I wore a nice skirt and blouse.
I didn't. I dressre normally. The test was a bunch of us sitting in a room quietly doing essentially math. It wouldn't hurt, but it wasnt a huge deal
Bla Blah what kind of math
You basically have to put numbers in numerical order. So they will give you 325.45, 322.65, and 679.009 and you have to put them in order. How do you apply for this job?
if it's a public library, applications may be in the town hall. but it never hurts to go into the library and ask! :)
T. Reads Okay thanks! I am currently working as a cashier at Taco Bell and i am not liking it so much lol.
best of luck!
T. Reads Yeah i was wondering why i couldn't find the job online lol. Thanks again!
I've been a page for 11 yrs, hate it! They treat you like you're the lowest form of humanity, like your an errand boy,
oh no! i'm really sorry to hear that. the rest of the staff at my library are uncommonly nice; it's kind of shocking to hear that you've had such a poor experience :(
I agree with Daniel. I've been a page for a few months and I took the interview to be a library assistant. don't know if I got it, but I did it
You do well enough and have the luck to do extra work, it will pay off. Did shelving for 10 yrs, but got to sub for another job at the Library - now I have that job since the one who did it retired.
