- Join me for a tour of the famous Blenheim Palace.. a popular tourist attraction not far from London and on the edge of the Cotswolds. This grand family home and estate are among the largest in England and in fact it’s the only “palace” in the UK that is not royal or ecclesiastical.
This was my 3nd time visiting Blenheim, but my first since starting my CZcams channel so I was excited to bring you along for the tour! What I was NOT expecting was to see birds everywhere! And most shocking of all was to be ATTACKED by a duck whilst filming the outro to this video!
I hope you enjoy this visit to Blenheim, and check out my other videos of the Cotswolds… my favourite area in England! Please be sure to SUBSCRIBE to not miss out on all the British fun in store this year! Cheers! XX Dara (and Ian)

Birthplace of Churchill, wow, I didn’t know that! love the old photos, great memories. Dastardly duck? Can’t wait for that. Beautiful building, love all the historical artefacts. great spot of side saddle! The weather changed but that duck sounds demented! The Baroque style fits perfectly, exceptionally impressive, particularly the ceiling art, what a feat. Dishes all served at once, thats a nice touch! Swan and Peacock pie? Yikes! They certainly knew how to party back then. Winston is half American? Im learning so much about him from this! The gardens look incredible, you would need more than one day to visit this place. Great statues! Incredible run ins with birds and a very cheeky duck! ❤
That was a very cheeky duck! The thing that I found most ironic when I watched back that footage is how I was distracted by worrying that another duck was going to attack Ian... and that's when that guy snuck up from behind me and bit me! 😳😂
@@MagentaOtterTravels brilliant footage Dara, we watched it back a few times! 🦆
@@GENerationXplorers haha thanks!
it is an amazing place, the architecture alone is worth the visit. the only thing missing from there is ... they should have tour guides in period costume.
That would be fun!!
Oh please lock me up for a night in the library....simply gorgeous!!!!
I agree it's a great place... I just don't want to wait till 3am to have my dinner LOL!
Blenheim Palace is a gorgeous place to visit and it's also the first stately home I ever visited. Being rather a naive backpacker, I caught a bus to the palace gates, thinking that the palace would be just the other side. Nope! It was a long way away! From that experience I learnt that stately homes all have really, really long driveways and it's best to visit them when you have a car!
Oh my goodness, I can so relate to that story! Blenheim was the first stately English home I ever visited as well, as a college girl backpacking through Europe!
The one duck ran a diversion in order for his friend to attack you. Treachorous !
EXACTLY! I would be impressed if I weren't so annoyed... but I'm just glad that for ONCE I caught it on video! hahaha
We did not get to Blenheim, although we were rather nearby. Blenheim is on my bucket list as Winston Churchill is in our family tree. I read a book Consuelo Vanderbilt wrote about her life. Very interesting! That organ is fabulous!!!😲 What a cheeky duck!! I don't know if I'd want to sit on the lawn...all those birds hanging around likely leave stuff behind.....😉🤭
Excellent point about the 🦆 💩 ... that was a very cheeky duck! When I didn't give him a hand out, he just decided to take my hand!
I am so interested to hear that you are related to Churchhill! And yes, I left out the salacious details, but the ninth Duke and Consuelo had a very turbulent relationship indeed! 😳
@@MagentaOtterTravels Yes they did. Consuelo wrote about it in her book. Yeah, the Winston connection was a surprise!
nice Blenheim Palace
Absolutely beautiful palace, Dara and Ian. The inside is stunning with all the stunning architecture, high ceilings, gorgeous tapestries, art and that amazing pipe organ! Interesting to see the letter from JFK to Winston Churchill. Kennedy's father Joseph was allied with Lord Chamberlain back in the day. Fortunately, Churchill would prevail. Our world could have ended up very different. He was a great man at the right time of history. Not exactly a teetotaler though! 🤣🤣Many hilarious quotes! Beautiful gardens. The duck was laughing earlier in the video, thinking of the good times to come, Dara!
You may be right about that dastardly duck!! 😬🦆
I had to close my eyes and ears when you talked about the "special dishes"....OMG! I would have been leaving the table either very hungry or full of dessert 😂😂
I agree! If I were in charge of killing and preparing my own dinner I would definitely become instantaneously vegetarian!!
The architect of Blenheim seems to have been inspired to some degree by Versailles. The front has some similarities with the Château.
I agree! Another grand place which was built to impress everyone with the owner's wealth 😉
You were literally only 11 miles away from me that day. You could have popped round for a cuppa. 🤣
Well, please tell me who makes the best scones in your area, and we need to meet up for a cream tea sometime! ☕️ 🫖
0:51 Wow! Just a quick comment on how beautiful the place is from above! Now on to the video~💕
If only drone photography were permitted... 🙄
I like the idea of having the French king's face on your seat cushions. During the Napoleonic wars we took this to a new level: you could buy a chamberpot with Napoleon's face in the bottom.
Oh my heavens! That is quite rude but also quite funny!
Such an informative, interesting video, Dara! So much to see, with great narration from you. Thank goodness the Duck Attack did not spoil any of your enjoyment and appreciation of Blenheim Palace!! 🦆😅
Thanks, Bobby! Fortunately the duck bite was, in the words of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, "only a flesh wound"😂😂

We're big Churchill fans - loved his wit and wisdom. A great leader during wartime.
He was quite a character! I have not read any of his books, but I've heard he was exceptional writer.
Even the Royal Horses lived in a nicer home than we do. I'm jealous!
...beautiful interior as well...
Yes, very opulent!
Can almost hear "Stella!" Or was that "I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse?"
Haha indeed
Hi Dara …. Thanks for another one of your wonderful informative videos …. It looked like you had a very traditional British start to your visit with the rain ☔️ …. fortunately it blew over and turned out nice ….
My wife and I are in Southern Spain at the moment ( in the middle of a one month vacation) escaping from the cold and rain … we’re staying in a small villa just outside the hilltop town of Camares ( about an hour’s drive from Malaga) it’s listed as one of the prettiest hilltop towns in Spain ….. it’s absolutely beautiful here … it’s so peaceful and serene and we’ve had some stunning sunsets … it’s a pity that I can’t post photos on here ….. anyway … again thanks for the video …. 👍🙏🦊
Oh wow, that DOES sound like an idyllic place to spend some time and enjoy great weather and beautiful sunsets!
I try not to complain about the rain in England... because we get really sad when there is a drought and all the rolling hills are brown and the flowers can't flourish. I was VERY thankful the rain stopped and the blue skies came out for me to finish filming this day, though ;-) Thanks for watching and enjoy the rest of your holiday! Cheers! Dara
Hello!!! from Angkor Wat temple. Wow awesome place to visiting. Your video is great very interesting place to exploring with your video. I'm very enjoyable to watching your video, great history from you and very very good video. I'm very appreciated with your great video. Great video creator channel thanks you so much for your sharing please have a wonderful day from Angkor Wat temple.❤
Dara this maybe one of your BEST videos! I could have watched another hour! I’d love to have a long stay in the library reading a few books! Love the history and your narration was outstanding! Must put on our list to visit!
Great outro, the birds of the UK seem to want to be close to you two! ~Cara 🌺
You are too kind! I am glad that you liked Blenheim, it really is an interesting place that is worth a visit! And yes, the ducks were kind of cracking me up at the end! The irony of me saying Ian was about to be attacked right before I got bitten?! And then after that the two other ducks look like they were about to come get me!!😂😂
Ooh loved the Joules wellies and the cute horseracing game. You sit a horse well, Dara!
I love those Joules wellies ... a perfect colour combination!🖤💗
Amazing Blenheim castle aka palace. Cool historical displays. That saloon is way cool. Nice capture on the wild animals! Cheers
Thanks so much! Cheers! Dara
That was great Dara. Blenheim is such a beautiful place - especially love the grounds and the Churchill history. It’s a spectacular palace too always reminds me a bit of Versailles.
We visited Churchill’s grave at Bladon just outside the grounds last time we were there.
That duck. 🤣🤣. I think it thought you had some bread - probably so used to being fed by people it just couldn’t wait 🤣🤣🤣
Have a great weekend 👍👍👍
Good point about the duck... I am sure with all those tourists there they are often fed! He would probably say I was just asking for it since I was kneeling down there in the grass...

What a beautiful palace, both inside and out. I loved the magnificent baroque style. Great job on the historical research. Very interesting and enjoyable. I think I'll pass on the swan and peacock pies!
Oh heavens yes! What a dreadful thing to do to such a gorgeous birds! And I can't imagine it even tastes very nice 😝
Blenheim palace is beautiful, I've never been inside as the only times I've been is to watch Blenheim horse trials in the autumn.
Must put it on my places to visit as it's not to far for a day trip from me.
How many horses were found guilty? 😂
Yes I recommend a visit inside! Though the gardens are also amazing when the weather is nice 😊

I know... we have a curse of aviary attacks! BTW I started editing next Friday's video... it's of footage from TWO YEARS ago that is gorgeous and I just had to finally get it published. But guess what was hidden in the video clips... rhubarb crumble with custard! As always, I thought of you, Susan ;-) Have a great weekend! XX Dara
looking forward to seeing your swan or peacock pie 😂

That was fun. The last time I visited Blenheim was 1998. Thank you for reviving fond memories.
And were there lots of birds? I don't remember them from past visits... but this time they were UNFORGETTABLE! haha
@MagentaOtterTravels I don't remember that many birds but there was a water skiing competition on the lake that might have scared them away.
@@gerrymccartney3561 water skiing competition sounds fun to watch!
Speaking of Winston Chruchill, did you know he was once hit by a car as he was crossing the street in New York city - apparently he was looking right instead of left
Really?! That's wild! The letter from JFK said in it that they were making him a "honorary American". But apparently he was not American enough to look the right direction before crossing the road...
Never been here!! We really enjoyed the tour. Loved your old pics of your trip. What stunning place. Ah those ducks are cute!!! They don’t look killer at all. You know more than we do about British royalty!! Loved the dining table!!! Not sure about Swan pie though!! Oo cake at. 2am - no thanks! Go on Ian, get your 6 pack out!! Ah that duck thought your hand was bread!! We really enjoyed this Dara. Cheers 🍻
I'm surprised that Ian let me keep that six pack joke in there! Lol😂
Yes the ducks 🦆 (especially the little ducklings!) were so cute and entertaining! But I have learned a painful lesson about how one needs to keep your fingers away from duck level!🥺😬
Blenheim is a stunningly beautiful (yet a bit over the top opulent) place. Worth a visit sometime! Thanks for watching! XX
you two and birds. 😂 it really did sound like she was laughing!
Seriously... they just have it out for us!!
There's some great books written about the 'Buccaneers' the wealthy heiresses of the US whose mothers (generally) pushed them into marriages with the English aristocracy, Consuelo Vanderbilt was a prime example, her mother pushed and finally ordered her daughter to marry the 9th Duke. His only interest in her was her money as he was marrying 'to save Blenheim'. It worked!
Yes, it really is such an outrageous story! I read that Consuelo's mother basically locked her in her room until she agreed to marry the Duke! I guess she really really wanted a daughter who was a duchess!!
My brother-in-law has co-authored a book which is soon to be published about the trees of Blenheim. It was previously thought that the oldest oak trees in the country are in Windsor Great Park but my b-I-l and friend have proved that they re older ones in Blenheim.
That is fascinating! What an interesting topic to write a book about! Thanks for sharing ;-)
Are you the one who rides horses? I was trying to remember when I was editing this video...
I am a rider, yes.

Yes, I would like to be able to explore the massive gardens more, and walk around the lake. I just need to watch my fingers next time so no ducks bite me 😆
I watched a short. Came across a history page, and they had a video about Blenheim Palace before you mentioned that you were going to post about it. Spooky.
Do I need to remind you that Google (therefore CZcams) knows EVERYTHING? Including what you are thinking about?
@@MagentaOtterTravels Thinking? I rarely do that. It's too much effort. 😂
You and Ian don't have much luck with birds do you.😉😀 Another interesting video.
They really have it out for us!!! Way too many aviary attacks!
Nice !! Wishing you lots of love, health and success! listen,
the sound of autumn,
The cricket flaps its wings,
It is the rhyme of saying goodbye to the balcony.
Rows of wild geese catch up to the white clouds,
Sow a warm exhortation;
A gust of autumn wind blows across the fields,
Send a harvest song.
listen,
into autumn,
Into this vast concert hall,
You go and listen to Qiu's voice carefully.
the sound of autumn,
in every leaf,
in each flower,
in every drop of water,
In every unfolding grain.
listen,
the sound of autumn,
came hastily from afar,
Hurry away to the distance.
listen,
We heard the voice of Autumn.

Fantastic place! I was there last month
Yes, it really is opulent and full of interesting history! Definitely worth a visit. Thanks for your comment! Dara
I think it would be very unappetizing to have the taxidermied swan or peacock on the table with the corresponding pie.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of taxidermy... OR swan/peacocks in a pie!
Hi Dara, I've got another explanation for your duck attack, you'd got your right hand flat on the grass, he was looking for food, saw your pinky, and thought it was a nice fat worm. As soon as you reacted, he backed off, looking rather non-plussed! "where did that nice juicy worm go?"
I'm sure you are right! I've learned an important lesson about minding where my fingers are around ducks!!!🦆
Churchill was famous for his insults and one liners. Lady Astor is alleged to have said to him that if she was his wife she would put poison in his coffee and he replied that if she was his wife he would drink it. Then there was the woman who chastised him, saying “sir you are drunk” and he replied “yes but tomorrow I will be sober but you will still be ugly.” There are many more but they are my favourites.
That second comment about being ugly is one I have definitely heard before, but I didn't know that was Churchill! He was very funny as well as rather mean 😂
@@MagentaOtterTravels especially when drunk apparently😂

The duck probably thought you were food, as they've got used to people feeding them

how funny that you’re watching one about to get Ian and then another duck sneaks up on you 😂
I know! I think they were in cahoots!!!
So you not only have problems with roosters, sea gulls....but apparently with dugs too 🤣
Looks like you were voice dictating that time... yes, ducks have it out for me as well!

If you believe certain modern movies Churchill's gift of the Palace might also have something to do with his wife's 'ahem' assistance in the Royal Bedchamber
Oh goodness! I hope that's not true...
At least Ducks 🦆 are better than having a scary encounter with a Herd of Cows Dara... 🐄 😂 I personally haven't been to Blenheim Palace myself... But I've seen lots of TV shows featuring the Palace and it's vast estate... I've visited lots of grand Stately Homes and historical buildings before... My personal favourites are Chatsworth House... Wentworth Woodhouse (currently undergoing major refurbishment after many years of neglect)... Haddon Hall... Castle Howard... As well as the Royal Pavilion in Brighton... Unfortunately visitors aren't allowed to take photographs or video here on the inside of the Royal Pavilion... Although there are some images and footage readily available online... Including here on CZcams... I'll be the first to admit Dara... That some of us who're natives here... Tend to take these wonderful buildings for granted most of the time... Hopefully your video will encourage some of us to arrange to visit one of these beautiful Stately Homes or Historical Buildings we have around the country... Many thanks for the tour of Blenheim Palace Dara & Ian... 👍 It won't be long now guys... In just over six weeks time you'll be back in good old Blighty once again... All the best guys... Cheers. 🍺
Yes, we are excited to be back! Hopefully there will be lots of rain between now and then to make the grass nice and green and all the flowers bloom in time for us... so that we can have a few blue skies for nice filming after we arrive!
I agree about the stately homes. And Chatsworth house is one of my favorites as well! I've been there three times, but not since having my CZcams channel. I do get frustrated when I go visit a beautiful home and they don't allow any photography inside, though ...
@@MagentaOtterTravels February was the driest month for 30 years. Possibility of hosepipe bans in the summer.
@@Poliss95 oh no! I don't like hearing that
@@MagentaOtterTravels I think that the reason some places don't allow photography Dara... Is that these places tend to have their own gift shops... And most will have things like... Postcards... Drinks Coasters... Image Books... Calendars... Key Rings... Mugs... Tea Towels etc... For members of the public to purchase... The images used for these items... Will normally be taken by a professional photographer to show the Stately Home at it's very best... Visitors might be less inclined to make those purchases if they already have their own images on their cameras... So in some respects i can understand why they're asking visitors not to take photographs... Plus it has been known for criminal gangs to target Stately Homes... Looking for weaknesses in their security set ups... Like blind spots and general flaws in their overall security systems... But their no photography rules can be really annoying at times... But i also understand exactly why that's the case. 👍
@@rickb3645 it has only really bothered me since becoming a CZcamsr. I remember visiting a castle in Scotland that I was so excited to film, and when I heard no photography was allowed I was frustrated that I had allocated a whole day and a lot of money to visiting that place that I could not vlog... they do always use as an excuse that it's because it is still currently a family home and they do it for privacy/security reasons.
Telling yah ,at the start that first duck went straight at ya ,get blessed mate! Dara is there a 666 in his hairline somewhere.😊 WTH. On a more serious note it’s a wonderful palace❤
They were working in unison, those ducks! One was trying to attack Ian as he was filming, which distracted me from the one sneaking up behind me! And THEN two came waddling up to me from the front after that! They wrongly assumed we had food... haha
The killer duck, very Steven King, l was in the field telling a horse how beautiful he was and he bit me. Told him he was off the Christmas card list. Beautiful place old Winston didn't end his days in a small house either. Would not want the fuel bills.
Sounds like you have similar luck to us! Ian was stroking a pony in Dartmoor that bit him too! I agree... those grand homes are not energy efficient... really nothing about them is my lifestyle, but they are fun to visit just to see a different slice of life from a different time! Thanks for your comment. Cheers! Dara
