Thank you for watching!
Ghostrider Don Here: Great content from my friend Jim Shorten. So glad you were able to hook up and interview this truly "Great American Treasure," "Just another Day in SOG"
Mr.Don, would love to chat with you one day! Are you on Facebook or could I leave my email for you somewhere ?
Thank you, sir!
Mr. Ghost rider, I've binge watched all of your interviews on CZcams. Your a helluva pilot and an excellent 11bravo, watching you play ARMA. I found out about SOG as a young kid in the 80s when one of the 1st books came out and I was instantly hooked on learning more. My dad was in the 199th LIB 67-68. Best fiction book about Vietnam combat is "The 13th Valley ". I'm sure you have read it.
Always a pleasure to hear Jim Shorten. The SOG guys are all such incredible people.
There are a couple of people I've never seen long interviews with who I think would be really interesting - not sure if you are aware of either of them?
One is Bob Ford, author of Black Cat 2-1. There are a lot of good Vietnam war helicopter books, but I think his is my favourite - his stories, and his attitude is incredible. In addition to that he was on the ground for the siege of Hue and flew a SOG pick up towards the end of his tour.
The other is Tom Yarborough, author of Da Nang Diary. An OV-10 FAC who then flew Prairie Fire missions.
If you don't know them I'd highly recommend both books. Thanks for another cool interview 👍
Thanks for the recommendations, sir!
Just finished Danang Diaries! He did A Shau Valor too! I’m about to start Project Delta FAC John Flanagan’s “Above The Treetop”
@@budgibson185 you know, I thought I'd read A-Shau Valor, turns out I only downloaded the sample. Thanks for the reminder - that's another book to put in the queue 😁
@@russ1046 DEF! Check out above the treetops too! It’s no joke
@@budgibson185 I absolutely will - thank you 👍. I first read about SOG a few years ago in Marshall Harrison's 'A Lonely Kind of War' (another OV-10 FAC). That sent me down all kinds of rabbit holes from the SOG guys to the Spads, Raven FACs ... so many books, not enough time! At least with e-books I'm more under the radar - I already filled quite a lot of the house with real ones 🤣
Jim is clearly one of SOG recon legends. Thank you for posting it Andy.
Thank you, sir!
Oh man… Hey John, what a pleasure to catch you down here in the comments. It’s just so cool when you guys do this because it makes you guys seem like more than just legends. Like, you’re actually real ppl.
Also, I love how you guys still have each other’s backs… Even when it comes to just supporting each other and giving each other props down in the CZcams comment section for an interview…. Thank you for your service and putting everything out there for the country, but also for doing these interviews and writing the books n stuff… You guys were truly my heroes since I first heard about you as a kid and to finally get the inside scoop of all the wild missions n badassery, it’s just a true honor. Have a good one man!
@@benyoung552 - Ben, thank you for your note and your kind words, sir. Have an enjoyable Independence Day.
@@hanyolo382 _ THank you for your note. Notes like yours mean a lot to me. Appreciate. Have an enjoyable Independence Day.
Jim’s a great person always going doing seeing always upbeat.
I wished you would have asked about the
Spies in sog headquarters in siagon..
I hope to get there one day with future guests, Jim and I talked for 4+ hours and barely scratched the surface.
Just got off the phone w Mr.Jim! He is one of the kindest most knowledgeable men I’ve had the honor to speak with! The epitome of a Green Beret
Jim is a great guy. We talked for hours like we had known each other for ever. Just a great guy to talk with, I can't wait to meet him in person one day.
Mr.Dan had run around 12-13 missions by that time including a REALLY bad mission with Hawaii and Glen uemura before he and Mr Jim ran that bad one and he was done. Crazy enough was kidnapped in Laos later on lol. He got out safely no worries. I spoke o him a week or two back
Stop interrupting the guest let them tell there
Let the freakin’ guy talk!
Nice interview, always fun listening to Jim and the other SOG guys.
Jim, you’re so awesome dude! You’ve even answered like 3 of my messages before! I’ll never miss an interview with you in it. You’re such a positive, easy going person, with one hell of a tale to tell.
Great podcast! My Dad Jack Damoth ran with Rt Trowell with CCS and later with CCC. He passed Sept. 2013
Your father was a hero and unbelievably brave man ! You should feel the upmost pride in him! A true warrior ! If on FB I’d love to have you apart of my SOG history group that a lot of the guys are in! I’ve been interviewing guys for the past 5 years
@@budgibson185 That would be great. Thank you so much. I dearly appreciate you guys
@@budgibson185 Please post my videos if you think anyone would enjoy them.
@@budgibson185 do you post your interviews anywhere?
Friendly suggestion, just nod instead of saying "yes" or "uh-huh" everytime especially on zoom, cause it interrupts him constantly.
Drone on with your soliciting at the end of the video
Can’t believe this guy is 76.
I thank all of you sf guys and all the other soldiers that was over there for your service.
Dude find another hobby, you’re not good at interviews. The SOG guys are fascinating.
I REALLY ENJOIED THIS INTERVIEW. i was a 11B 1ST LT IN THE 9TH DIVISON AND CAN RELATE TO SOME OF THIS, BUT LESS CRAZY IN THE DELTA SOUTH OF SAIGON
Ask them about Jerry Shriver plz
it's like you're trying to impress this guy with your immense wikipedia knowledge....he was there bro.
I have so much respect for our veterans . They are amazing examples of getting things done.
The war was not necessary or even responsible foreign policy. Globalists made money and played global games .
Awesome, just awesome. Good interviewer, too. Hard to not get a little giddy/silly listening to this amazing man!
Okay, I spend an inordinate amount of time watching YT videos, including interviews, and let me just say that your interviewing skills/techniques are outstanding. Great interview!!
The wild carrot!
Thanks Andy!
Thank you, it is my pleasure to share Jim's amazing story of service and sacrifice.
Great Podcast!
Thank you, sir!
You can tell Jim was just as annoyed with this guy as the listeners
BRILLIANT
Great episode Andy ! I’m sorry but I lost your email! Could you post it so I could touch base w you
No problem, sir: themodernmilitaryhistory@gmail.com
Just need to let the man Talk, like everytime you interrupt him it’s ruining the damn program.
Great interview. But the interviewer needs to cut out the Oh, wows, Ooooos, Ohhhhhs, and Ahhhhhs. It takes away from the good questions he asks
Agreed.
War is HELL, literally!!
Good interview....what a character
If this interviewer says “oh wow” once more I’m out.
The interviewer's noises, laughs and comments are disrupting the interview. Anyway it's good to hear this soldier's story.
Don't explain what he just explained
Whole teams being lost/overran has always bothered me and held great interest. Not sure how true it is but I read about a recon team up by the DMZ and they were found dead, not stripped or mutilated, still in their wagon wheel ndp.
Very cool!
You talk way to much
seems like you need to listen more
Sorry but you ruined the interview with you comments and trying to brown nose your guest let the man tell his story
Consider listening to Russel Brand he asks multi part questions to his guests and allows them all the time they need to explain. It builds minutes of uninterrupted content.
I think Jim was 5 year old then he was in the was . He look great and youg
You hear alot bullshit about grunt's throwing away their gear when it got heavy, for a start there checked by their Sergeant to what they have and actually need, and yes they did throw extra grenades away along the trails, special ones with instant explosive fuse's fitted, the VC NVA could get inventive so could the US troops, glad that was said, ppl probably did f*ck kit away but that would be during the takeing the troops home phase, not much need for extra ammo grenades etc when you don't need them, mostly the new troops or cherries as they was called would try get a mbt if he could going out on first combat patrol, they learned fast, thank you for your story and trying to make the world safer for mankind.☘️🇮🇪🇺🇸
We all need Jesus. John 3:16.
The gp nvg 18 night wear, $60,000, Afghanistan now has?
Interviewer needs to work on his listening skills, especially with a man like this.
Has anyone asked these men about the Phoenix Program?
What is that? If you don’t mind elaborating
A targeted assassination program designed to terrorize the north Vietnamese through less then ethical means
Actually it was a program to kill insurgent leaders in the south. So I would assume it was done by other sf forces
Maybe it's so much more secret we won't get to hear it!
@@guccimane623 by all accounts, it was extremely effective, which makes it even more interesting to reflect on it, given how really terrible the activities were. apparently many Vietnamese communists expressed how terrified they were by the fear of falling into the hands of phoenix operators.
I feel the same way. I know it would suck being a soldier in Vietnam but it's like mu cousin said about Afghanistan its a million dollar experience that he wouldn't pay a dollar to see again.. I know I died there in my previous life.
Story
👍
It was extremely difficult to enjoy this interview because of the constant interruption, lengthy interviewer commentary and need to let us know how these stories make you feel. It’s not about you.
Maybe a little less banter from the host? Love and appreciate the content though. Keep it up!
bro you almost made this unwatchable....
....don't giggle & gush like 12 year old girl while you're talking to a war hero.
most boring interviewer ever....couldn't do it till the end...I kept trying because of Wild Carrot but the chap really screwed up
love the guest, cant stand this interviewer. Such bizarre arrogance. Never again.
Interviewer comes across as a teenage girl.
Get a effing job
DAD? Is that you?
