- Before capturing the UFC Lightweight title in 2022, Islam Makhachev was a contender with huge expectations due to his friendship and training experience with MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov. After Makhachev's first UFC main event in July 2021, he would callout Michael Chandler. But Chandler would not commit to a future fight with Islam. Michael didn’t really duck him. He joined UFC and wanted to fight Khabib who is similar style. What’s not said here is Chandler just KO’d hooker and almost beat Charles like 2 months before this call out. At that moment he’s thinking he almost KO’d the champ. He wants a top 5 fight and to get back in contention. Islam is somewhere in top 10. It just happened that way. I don’t think it’s a fun fight for anyone to go up against Islam but the risk reward wasn’t there.

Even with being taken down when you figure in what Volk Did I would think Dustin has a lot longer reach,more experience and also has the gas tank to go 5 rounds easy. Not to mention Dustin has really good Jits although it is not seen often. He also is the only person to nearly beat Khabib. Islam is not close to the level of Khabib. Islam would not have submitted Dan Hooker had Khabib not told him to put his leg over his head.
