Thank you once again from a septegenarian lady who would no longer manage the walk and the steep hills. I have never been to this castle and you took me around with you. Yes, a younger me would have tried to go up and up that tower! I used to visit Stonehenge when you could touch the stones as you did the castle walls. I feel the links with our past in old places. Please come back and take us with you, but also I love to go around the US with you to the old and mysterious places where people once were.

"It's time we put the flame torch to their keep" a line from Elton John's "Burn Down the Mission". I now know what a keep is and why one would burn it. Thank you, I've loved that song since 1970. Great exploring, keep it up.

All castle spiral staircases rotate that way, so to put any body attacking you coming up the stairs at a disadvantage, if they where right handed as most people are.

Great video, thanks Chris. It's amazing to think that the Romans were busily building advanced stone structures up and down the country nearly 1,000 years earlier, and that after their withdrawal, it was many hundreds of years before the knowledge necessary to perform the engineering work required to put such things together was re-learned.
Heh, so the keep was like a medieval panic room.

@Mobile Instinct 2 You should visit Bridgnorth on the severn in shropshire, it also has castle ruins from the 11th century, very interesting dramatic story surrounds it , it was destroyed by royalists during the civil war to keep the parliamentarians from gaining control, th part of the tower that is left leans at a degree greater than the leaning tower of pisa ... i'm American and lived there for 6 years theres also a very old church and cemetery outside of town named Tasley I'm pretty sure, theres a treasure trove for you there , hermitages that witches lived in , kids dying in the later great stuff if you want to know more hit me up

Cool place! I am thinking that winters would have been rather unpleasant in that keep but maybe folks didnt spend much time in it during cold weather, except the poor soldiers who had to use it as a watchtower. Life wasnt nearly as pleasant back then. Thanks!!

So do you think the lady in the shawl, looking out of the arched window at about 8:24 could be Lady Peveril surveying lost glory? ;) How odd that it was just an administrative building and hunting lodge. it looks like it was built for war, to withstand pounding by cannon and repel fierce invasion. I guess it was built to impress !

If any at all.. explorer..traveler.. adventurer.. instinctive hunter..as always thank you Sir.. it's kinda interesting thinking back in time when the last person that cared about that place walked off of that property...you know the difference between a great imaculate structure still standing today after 1000s of years .. as apposed 2 a ran down pile of ruble.......
Who you leave in charge of it............
