  • ANOTHER WORLD: Ada Dies Pt. 5
The beginning of 1993 brought sad news of the death of AW veteran actress Constance Ford, known to AW fans as Rachel's beloved mother Ada Hobson. This great, tough, no-nonsense lady was the epitome of "saying it like it was" and inspired many with her truth and wisdom. Her passing was truly a great loss to the show. The brief storyline where we learn of Ada's falling ill and eventual passing is presented here in her memory.
In Part 5, Matt speaks about his grandmother on Rachel's behalf. He speaks tenderly and tearfully about what he thinks she would want, and that is to be remembered as being tough, funny, full of love and loyalty.
Rachel speaks about how Ada's sense of humor enabled Ada to be tough through life (a clip of Ada mopping the floor is shown). She remarks about how Ada never let Rachel take herself too seriously (a clip of Ada giving Rachel advice when Mac died is shown). She then relates Ada's resilience in life with a deck of cards (a clip of a tender moment between Ada and Rachel is shown where they profess their love for each other while appreciating the many years of ups and downs they've had in their relationship).
Amanda recalls how full of love and wonder Ada was when she saw her great-granddaughter Allie for the first time. She vows that she'll always remember that moment and her.
Nancy recalls many moments she had with her mother, some of which were loud and tumultuous. Inspite of that, she always knew Ada loved her. She refers to when she left Bay City years ago and how it was the toughest good-bye she ever had to make until she lost her mother (a clip of when Nancy saying good-bye to Ada is shown).
Clarice speaks of how Ada opened her home to her and how she was her mother-in-law, friend and inspiration. She also mentions that she taught Clarice how to cook, something for which her family is eternally grateful.
Aunt Liz speaks of how Ada did everything better than she did, including out shouting her when it came to her family (a clip of Ada telling Liz to butt out of Amanda's business is shown).
Paulina mentions how Ada made her feel like the Cory house was her home and that she was hers.
Matt remarks how Ada kept things in perspective for him. He recalls that when Mac died, she told him what he needed to hear. Her words of wisdom, including that death is a part of life, is what he envisions she'd say to him right now about her own passing (a clip of Ada consoling Matt when Mac died is shown).

I loved Ada, She was salt of the earth. Hard as a rock. She could tell you off where you couldn't help but love her. When Constance and Ada died, Another World was dealt a great blow.

She was the matriarch of Bay City. She beat Liz for the title! Ha ha!!!! Liz took over after Ada passed on.😎❤

Though it was nobody’s fault, the deaths of Mac and Ada crippled the show.

Constance Ford was the heart of another world, that voice of reason, the person who possessed straightforward honesty, she sprinkled humor when needed and she taught the meaning of love. Loosing Ada was like loosing your best friend. We never knew her but we saw parts of her in our friends and loved ones. Thank you for the joy you brought into our lives, you were truly a master of your craft.

Death is a part of life. Thanks to the writers and Ada, I've remembered this line ever since this episode aired. Dominique, Scotty's wife on GH, died the same week in 1993. I was bawling my eyes out that April.

Thank you AnotherWorldLover for uploading these wonderful scenes! These scenes, this show is the reason why soaps have a place in our world! My memories of Another World will live on in me forever! I hope and pray that someday, somehow the soap genre can be revived! I would love an original soap opera network to be born someday on cable tv that would show classics like AW and brand new soaps. Soap Net was a wash! Who knows. Maybe somebody out there will realize there is a place for soaps!

I do not believe that for a moment those two actresses did not love each other, dont you think that is why we loved that SOAP so much?

Constance Ford was so wonderful as Ada, and the memorial honoring Ford and Ada is so heartfelt. It is very good to see Jane Cameron (Nancy), Gail Brown (Clarice), and Irene Dailey (Liz) in these scenes. The passings of Ford, Douglass Watson, and Brent Collins were major losses for he show.

Gail Brown was my neighbor growing up. I was friends with her son and she used to drive me to school sometimes. Her name is actually Duggan.

Constance Ford was a fashion model in the 1940's and was in the original "Death of a Salesman" on Broadway. I love her duking it out with Jeanne Cooper in "House of Women" and as Joan Crawford's sidekick in "The Caretakers". I always found her to be so beautiful, even though she was a bit mannish to some fans. I'll take that with Irene Dailey as the meddling Liz and Barbara Berjer as that piece of Scottish wisdom over the assembly line non-beauties of today.

Sadly, none of Ada’s life before having Rachel was ever explored. We never knew what happened to her to make her so tough.
