The IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) refers to a comic book series published by IDW Publishing, which started in 2011. It is a reboot of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, presenting a fresh take on the beloved characters and their adventures. The IDW TMNT comics are well-regarded for their engaging storytelling, dynamic artwork, and character development.
In the IDW TMNT comics, the Turtles' origin story remains relatively consistent with the original Mirage Comics version. Four baby turtles and a rat were exposed to mutagen, transforming them into humanoid creatures. They were raised by Splinter, the mutated rat, and trained in the art of ninjutsu, becoming Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael.
The IDW series, written and illustrated by various talented creators, takes the Turtles on new and exciting journeys, incorporating elements from different iterations of the TMNT franchise while also introducing unique story arcs and characters. The comics explore complex themes, interpersonal dynamics among the Turtles and their allies, and epic battles against both familiar villains like Shredder and new antagonists.
The IDW TMNT series has received critical acclaim and has become a beloved continuation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles legacy, appealing to long-time fans and newcomers alike. It has successfully reinvigorated the franchise, showcasing the enduring popularity of the Heroes in a Half-Shell.
IDW Publishing, commonly known as IDW Comics or simply IDW, is an American comic book publisher based in San Diego, California. It was founded in 1999 by Ted Adams, Alex Garner, Kris Oprisko, and Robbie Robbins. IDW has become one of the major players in the comic book industry and is well-known for producing a wide range of comic books, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: IDW acquired the rights to publish new TMNT comics in 2011 and launched a highly successful and critically acclaimed series.

What do you guys think of these IDW from Loyal Subjects?
They look so cool
I think so too!
Looking good. I really like they're carving out their own niche, the Urban Legends line and this IDW line gives them something unique against the NECA lines. They've definitely improved over the original ones they released as well.
Will get it great review
So far, my favorite set of action figures for me
That specific gauntlet is from the Donatello one shot from IDW. I co-wote it, and I am thrilled it was included. It was, of course, inspired by the fact that Donnie got a similar gauntlet in the original Mirage one shot.
Congratulations!! 👏🏻
Brag much lol jk that's really awesome actually! congrats and thank you for the art
Thanks! for contributing to such an amazing comic!
I loved that one shot!! Great work! IDW TMNT is my favorite comic series
Do you like Tom Petty?
Mateus Santolouco always had the best IDW style. I'm glad they adapted his art into figure form.
It's a nice touch that Donnie has a prosthetic carapace like in the comics.
I’m glad they look accurate to the comic source material for the people that want them. Mirage fans have gotten a good amount of rep so it’s about time idw does too. Even tho I have to admit, I’m personally not the biggest fan of their head designs
Amazing! Glad we finally got the IDW Comic Ninja Turtles as figures. Hope we get Jennika and Lita.
Me too!
@@Pixel-danthese are pretty awesome! Did you go in on Cats Lair?
And Alopex!
Dude I agree with all of that but I wanna see a new slash and the foot clan version of Leo
Awesome can't wait to see version 2 come out in 6 months. They should put the "drawers" name on the box so that way we know which IDW comic they are based on.
For those that don't read IDW TMNT, the design of the turtles ( & other characters) changes from issue to issue depending on who drew it. We could literally see 5 or 6 different versions for all the characters in this line.
Matters Santoluco was actually signing these at sdcc, but I am a little surprised they don't have his name credited or signature on one of the panels too.
13:45 Mikey has been seen with those from time to time, but just for you Dan the Man, Those particular weapons are addressed as the Kusarigama.
I love the Shredder's design in this run and would love to see it released! Splinter, Alopex, Jenika! and the rest of the migthy mutanimals!
I really hope we also get a figure of IDW Krang. That would be an instant buy for sure
When I saw these on preorder on Entertainment Earth, it caught my attention. They looked good from the initial photos I saw and I thought I'd be interested in getting a set of turtles based on the IDW comics. I don't think I'm a fan of the blackwash on these figures. I guess these figures are something I'd have to see in person for myself. As we are seeing the IDW versions of the turtles, I'm wondering if we'd see a Jennika figure sometime in the future. That would be interesting to see.
I’m so happy that Loyal Subjects was the one to give us IDW turtles! I have to stick with the regular retail ones, but I have no problems with that because I think that the Comic Con ones look a little too shiny, but they still look pretty good. I hope that the regular retail ones don’t have the same tightness problem with the articulation. I can’t wait to get them! Great video!
Yes! I’ve been waiting for these since 2011. Since, I picked the first issue of Tmnt IDW, I’ve always wanted figures based on these looks.
Great review. And thanks for the tips and warning about handling figures to prevent breaking off parts.
Brooooo, Pixel Dan it’s been years for me man, I’m so happy I’ve found you again 😫
This the third set of TMNT in my hot list after the Neca set exclusive and Mayhem sets
oh yea?!
I think a nice Matte Spay would make these look much much better. Currently as you mentioned they are very shiny
They are definitely a must have
These look awesome, can’t wait to get their retail release!
I'm still hoping for a Alopex figure, it's a shame no one ever made a Figure for her
That would be interesting!
She's coming. Along with Dark Leo and bunch of others.
@@Pixel-dan it would be awesome! she's a great character!
@@Hiphopgeek86 i really hope so
Dark Leo!!
When given the opportunity, I will go for the retail versions.
These figures do look awesome.
1 thing I would wanna do is IDW comic turtles vs Mirage comic turtles.
I have the 2014 Playmates ones as well as the black & white versions with red bandannas & the black & white comic, but I also wanna get those newer Mirage comic turtle figures I've been seeing with the multicolored bandannas as well as those Mezco ones.
This figs are awesome. I got the Grey color scheme set from Wal-Mart recently.
I love Santolouco artstyle so much, i want that boys.
Just got done collecting MM wave one and it seems these are probably gonna be the next thing on my list! great video!
I have got to stop watching your review videos, you make me want to buy every toy you talk about! Lol. I already have a TMNT shelf and I don't have enough space for multiple versions of the turtles, but somehow I just made a preorder for these guys anyway! Haha
Thank you Dan, thank you for pointing out weak joints and too small pegs and such. I can see from a picture if a toy is pretty but not if it's weak and will fall apart playing around with a Toy.
I cant help of thinking of Merman from the He Man line when I see this Mikey.
It has to be a combination of how his face is sculpted with that grine/smirk on his face, together with the eyes and that type of orange bandana and how it sits around his eyes.
Thanks Dan!! I’ve liked your videos for over 10 years!!!
Wow I’m definitely picking these 4 up for my birthday definitely!
Amazing video. I love the IDW turtles and I am definitely going to get these figures.
Don actually introduced me to the bst axn line and idw tmnt figs
As always, a very nice video! What you said about Leo, had me thinking...ever thought about doing a mishap video, i.e. all of the times you accidentally snap off/broken a toy while filming? Just wondering..not sure if a lot of the toy companies would appreciate that, now that I'm thinking about it. :)
Ha you might be right
They went CRAZY with the wash on these guys.
Not a fan?
@@Pixel-dan it's about 50% too much for me. On some parts like the legs, it literally looks like black paint. I ordered the regular retail versions from BBTS (still waiting).
I was just eyeballing the regular retail versions of these on Big Bad Toy Store and had to re-watch this review. Controversial opinion: I kinda prefer those to these SDCC versions. They're cleaner to me. I way prefer these to the new Mutant Mayhem figures. Think I'll pick 'em up.
I love your videos
Thank you so much!
They're bigger than I thought
I need these because they are the same style as the Turtles from the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES MUTANTS IN MANATON game.
Oh yea
A very cool set. Ralph is particularly awesome
Yes he is!
I gust want to say I love your channel and I have been watching it for years and I have
allways wanted to meet you keep it up
Hey dan! new collector here. if you had to recomend a set of turtles to collect, which would you recomend? i'm open to any of their designs, looking for good articulation. there seems to be so many options!
Awesome job dan thumb up.
I like your review's Dan gives me valuable info of the figures i want to add for my collection
THat makes me so happy to hear! Just want to help!
Im ecstatic that super loyal subjects has gotten successful with this line. But already their too expensive. So I'm completely uninterested except in particular passionate, passing, perusal per se 😛
Did you see the Mutant Mayhem glow in the dark packs? Each turtle has the baby, tot, and full sized in glow in the dark plastic, $15
Yep!
I wonder if doing a wash on the basic versions of these would give the same result?
these look great, better then they usually did in the comics lol
I need this, hope they release soon
💪🏽
They are awesome
yea!?
Do you remember that one time that Donatello almost died in his shell was broken and was replaced with a metal shell
Thanks for the review. I just canceled my preorder 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Oh noooo!!!
NECA should take notes on the shorter Mikey
This video is great 😁 showing the different versions of tmnt, but Loyal Subject's one is horrible for me, those double joints, more than having movements in the muscles are unnecessary, I say that less is more, the Neca and S7 are better, greetings 💪🏻👏🏻🇦🇷
Slick catch on Raph. You're a ninja.
I try
I love that they gave Donnie a metal shell. I was wondering if they would.
Something happened to his shell in the IDW comics?
@@denishiawilliams895a big something. I won't put any spoilers here, but I definitely recommend looking it up.
Basically, Donnie got jumped by Bebop and Rocksteady
How much do you think the retail figs will go for??
21$
Ill be getting the retail version
Awesome!
I like the IDW look a lot better than the first run of Best AXN Turtles
They look great!
These dont look bad but the winking head on Mikey. They didnt paint the closed eye which is very awkward
I really don’t like the wash but otherwise the figures look good. @Pixel-Dan, as a relatively new subscriber I’m enjoying your previous TMNT & MOTU reviews.
If you had to pick a version of Raph you like the best, comics and other iterations included, (i think he's your favorite turtle?), who's your favorite? Mine has to be 87 raph
Well, yeah, 87 raph because that's my childhood!
@@Pixel-dan Awesome! Nice review btw
thank you so much!
Great review, I liked them. Though would have liked to hav'em compared to the Nickelodeon turtles, my favorites. Btw, Mike's ninja scythes are called "kama"...
I think a Kama is just a handle with a blade. When you involve a chain and a second handle, it’s a Kusarigama. I’ll happily be corrected if I’m wrong!
With a chain, it'd be a bakahatsuguma, if I remember well as an 80's kid....let's see.
Can you put the short swords on Mikey’s belt??? 🤔 It’s a shame the qc problems on them I hope neca gets idw license I would love to have those instead.
Use double sided tape on their feet to keep them standing up. I do that for all my actions figure
They look great, but they def need some Matte Spray to make them look perfect
I’m so tempted to get the new Mezco TMNT figures…. Somebody talk me out of it!
Do it!
@@Pixel-dan😫
Pretty cool overall, was going to pre-order the Raph to go on my dedicated shelf to the character, but I'll lookout for the hands. Jobby the Hong recommends a little super glue around the peg, letting it dry and it helps to make the wrist peg more snug, so I'll try that if it has any issues, otherwise liking the translation of the design from the page to the figure form here. The elbows and knees are dumb ugly but what'll ya do I guess.
oh that's a good tip.
Great sculpts but that ink wash and gloss is UUUUUUUUUUGLY!
I know everyone was fawning over the Mezco turtles but these are genuinely my favorite figures from any brand or lineup at SDCC 2023. I found them on Sunday at 4PM which made it even more special, right when booths were getting ready to close down. My next wishlist Turtles would be the Sophie Campbell designs.
Love hearing this!
I have OCD so when I got Donnie's bo staff I broke it because I forced it
Does anyone else own these?
I have the regular and black/ gray on the way.
Are they worth it?
I'm not feeling the wash. It just seems like a QC thing.
Not a big fan of BST AXN...
HARDLY the "best".
Every figure I have bought of theirs has a serious QC issue, and when I reach out to them I don't get much of an answer. Arms at the triceps, falling off. Now it looks like hands too. I'll be shocked if the hands hold the weapons properly without dropping them.
Now, I have been dying for SOMEone to make the art styles of the IDW comic into figure form so I guess I'll buy the retail versions. Happy I didn't spend the extra money for a basic wash that I can do on my own.
And no, the paint splotch is not a rare thing. Their QC is in desperate need of attention.
I suppose I'm the fool for giving them any more of my money... but I've been waiting for IDW figures so I guess I have little choice.
I think they’ve made great strides with these though!
@Pixel-dan I respect your opinion and, until I see these four new figures, respectfully disagree. Lol
Remember those 4-pack Mirage box sets? I spent 65 bucks a piece on those. Now? Two of the Foot ninjas have broken hip joints that sheared completely off while posing, Michelangelo's arm falls off at the tricep from a deformity in the plastic that they allowed to pass and be sold, the silver paint on the Shredder's helmet smudges up his nose, which is supposed to be a blacked out face. A few of the turtle's heads have misshapen white smudges on their masks from the whiteout eyes. All of the human figures legs are bow-legged and stand awkwardly. And all of the weapons fall out of all of their hands.
Yeah. Nor a fan of theirs. At all. Wasted a WHOLE lot of money that I don't have on products that were deformed, sloppy, clumsy, packed up and sold anyway. The ONLY reason they are getting yet another 100 bucks of my money (begrudgingly) is because I am a huge IDW art fan and need to add these iterations to my TMNT lineup.
@Pixel-dan I plan on giving them my own black and brown (on the shell) washes, and replacing the flimsy, useless plastic cord on Mikey's chucks with real chains and eye screws so they look functional and better on the eyes. I shouldn't have to do that at all, y'know? That's my whole frustration.
Also, don't know if you know because it wasn't in your video, but Donnie's shell is supposed to be "metal" and riveted since it was cracked.
LOVE your videos, Dan! I work in healthcare and they were a lifesaver for my morale all throughout the pandemic. I saw and dealt with so much despair and heartache on a daily basis, and it means the world to me that I had an escape for my favorite hobby. So, thank you.
don is looking really angry
Kind of yea
How cool would it be to get these from a Japanese toy company like sh figuarts
What about the Tmnt mutant mayhem SDCC figures
I couldn’t get them! Sold out so fast!
@@Pixel-dan aw man I was really looking forward watching that video
Cool sculpts but that black wash looks terrible.
Oh man. You don’t like?
@@Pixel-dan yup, not a fan of the wash on these sdcc ones. I just canceled my order from EE. Hopefully they go to someone who will enjoy them. Big fan of your channel btw.🤘
Do these figures feel cheap 🤔like the other ones from the loyal subjects
Not at all!
@@Pixel-danthanks for replying love your vids Especially the tmnt ones
No problem! Thank you so much for watching!
Eyy
eyy?
Did you Watch the new movie
They look a little too alien to me.
I am mystical Mikey but I’ll stick with the 2012 turtles
so typical bst axn quality with shiny paint and a dirty wash.
Oh no, these look like an amateur slopped them with a wash and called it a day.
These look so amazing, it's nice to see loyal subjects doing taller figs ❤
i think Loyal Subjects is not very good in applying wash on these figues ...
If I'm gonna be 100% honest, this is just my opinion. I'm not a fan of the idw designs, same with the 2012 Nick series I don't like when they make the turtles looks so skinny they almost like they have anorexia I prefer the turtles to look more buff you know more muscular like in the 2003 series but if you guys like these designs that's alright
I've seen alot bad reviews on the Loyal Subjects brand so its a Definite pass for me on this brand!!
I have the set of Turtles they did based on the 87 cartoon and they look okay but the articulation is a bit lacking. They have double jointed knees and elbows but they're designed so they really break up the sculpt without giving you any more range than a single joint would. And they have really overdesigned torso articulation that's completely unusable with the shell on since it gets in the way. Also the weapons really don't fit in the hands very well, especially Raphael's sai which are really loosey goosey. Oh, and Leonardo doesn't have the straps over his shoulders because he shares a sculpt with the others meaning the holsters for his swords just sit on his belt and therefore they don't look good displayed that way as they hang far too low.
So yeah, a lot of problems, but I got them because I'm on a budget and I was able to get all four of the BST AXN figures for the price of one of the NECA ones and probably a third of the cost of one SHF figure. I also like that they're right around 5" so scale nicely with all my 6" figures like Marvel Legends, Black Series and DCUC since the 87 Turtles were always portrayed as being a good foot shorter than human characters.
So they're okay if you're on a tight budget but if you have the money go for one of the NECA, Super 7 or SHF lines or even the Playmates 6" collector figures. However if you very specifically want the IDW Turtles there's really no option since nobody else has done them to my knowledge.
You can tell that these ones are for kids more . Not much articulation.
they look like children's toys because of the awful cuts for articulation but they're actually very delicate because they're made of super brittle bootleg quality plastic.
The headsculpts are awful though
Too much color wash. They look way to dirty 😅
Dirty!? hahaha
With the angry heads and the white out eyes, they don't look too bad, but I really dislike the IDW designs. That packaging art is pretty horrible.
It’s still a bst axn figure remember that lol hot garbage
Is it just me or do these turtles look weird
ew
These look cheap and tacky
Love your videos. Can’t stand these figures though. The IDW versions of the turtles are so ugly.
Their heads look kinda different than their bodies
