- We have been loving the DJI Digital FPV system! It has performed so well for FPV freestyle and cinematic flying.... but what about top level racing? Captain Vanover is here to pit digital FPV against analog FPV. Which system will he be able to fly the fastest??

I recall saying (even before I got my hands on a DJI system) that *VARIABLE* latency would be the issue for racers. However, if you're not a hardcore racer then the DJI system really is mind-blowingly good. My crashes are *so* much better in HD!
Lololol!
And by "better" you mean... more expensive?
@@mistercohaagen No... it means that I get to think _"I can save it"_ for an extra 10mS before I realize that I've crashed :-)
@@xjet Hehe, that you've already crashed... got it, lol!
ROFLMAO @xjet You kill me... literally... "I can save it"... Dude that's just omfg fun !
I love flying analog, it makes me feel like im back in the 80s.
One of the reason im still on analog, bring the og feeling🤣
My first thought is the drone with props would go faster.
:'D
Haha
Stop discrimination propless drones !
Depends on how hard you throw the other one. ;)
Underrated comment😂😂
*Plot twist:*
*_It was sponsored by FatShark_* 😂
Maybe DJI could make a ultra low latency mode by lowering the resolution and bitrate and having it set constant. At present it's at 960x720 up to 25Mbps 22 - 28ms when for racing you could still compete with analogue running at 480x360 locked to 5Mbps with a latency of hopefully around 11ms.
I'll never be as fast as Vanny, Drew or Bardwell, so I think latency will not be an issue. :)
In full agreement with this statement, concerning my fpv skill.
Yeah, if i ever get to the point where i start racing i might switch to analog, but since im sticking with freestyling im staying digital
Great job guys thanks for all the intel!
Awesome video thank you for the comparison I love the direction your taking rotor riot drew keep up the good work.
Excellent effort guys, thank you very much.
Thanks guys! Excellent episode!
Thank you! Wanted to see that for a while now
dude i love bardwell! consistent timing skills is really how you fly fpv
Great video guys. Alex you are a beast man crazy good flying.
The racing videos are gold. Thanks
I figured this was the case when digital systems came out. I'm glad you guys put em to the vanny test so I can feel better about my decision to get the HDO2 instead of the DJI system.
Literally unless you are a pro racer DJI smashes all expectations. I have it and there is no comparison. Not only that I crash less because I can actually see where I am going. Its the tech I have waited for almost six years to see happen.
Hey Rod, Thanks so so very deeply much for the great Hero Session cam you sold me through Shizzle Bo-dizzle FPV,Kyle. I appreciate your extremely fair price. I've reconditioned it and it has made me a couple beauty vids in the short time I've had it. THANK YOU AGAIN ROD.
Vanover is a beast...
He is insane
He really is.
Remember the video where he could tell the difference between to quads by their weights in motors?
yes. He REALLY is a beast.
Is he from earth??
I thought I was the only one who could see him :S
You ought to see it in person..... it's wicked fast!
i really like the subluminal and phycological messages pushing to help improve this hobby
the feed back from company's is driven by the testers,
Alex is SO consistent that i believe this is as good a test as any would be... when you're chasing the last milliseconds in a race to beat your nemesis, and your Alex level good...stuff like this matters !
he should have used the same controller for both quads aswell
I also think it's worth mentioning, the fatshark DVR makes the analogue look much worse than it actually looks in the goggles.
Exactly
@@fpv_com_pl fatshark DVR is almost the worst thing in FPV, its terrible if i knew how bad it was i would have never bought fatsharks.
I know what you mean, but it just makes Fatshark look worse. The DJI DVR crushes any onboard implementations by a large margin. Even analogue records better on it.
This is good to know. Looking at so much fatshark dvr footage I have always thought that there is no way I could fly with such an awful image, I would hit every branch and powerline in the world, lol. Not to say I don't already do that because I suck.
@@Alluvian567 yeah haha. if you wanna see some decent quality DVR, here's a video: czcams.com/video/htoVyTmGgfc/video.html
obviously it's still not 100% of the quality it is in the goggles, but it's obviously much better than what the fatshark DVR shows.
Love it when these guys get together.
Great stuff guys, tnx!
OMG he's fast! Its nice to see more race related content.
Been flying DJI HD on 3 different quads for 7 months now. Love it. No latency issues for me, but I'm not a "racer."
Excellent test and love the honesty ......somewhere in the future Analog/Digital will be ONE.
And FUN is , what it is all about
Awesome episode, guys. I had a blast watching this. I bet you guys had a blast filming it too. Yall look so happy, and you should.
If I could afford it, I'd be running dji digital right now. Just because I can't afford it doesn't mean I won't admit it's great.
I think only absolutely top-level pilots like Vanover will notice and be hampered by the variable latency. So of course, Drew and Bardwell: sorry but I guess that means you two simply aren't quite in Vanover's league just yet hahahah.
Yall keep up the excellent work!
Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
We are living a fantastic time being able to see those technology evolves. Just FPV is already a blast. When I was a kid being a pilot seemed unreachable. When I start flying, digital was just dream. And now I’d love to fly with it but it’s not reachable for my wallet so I hope in 5 or less year they will be better and cheaper digital system. But also my FPV budget will handle all my desire 😍🤩😍
Nice vid. Once the groove kicks in.. wow...
Thank you for your honesty. I fly both and agree with your findings. DJI looks great but variable latency is bad for racing. It feels like the quad is slowing down and speeding up when the latency changes. The variable latency even bothers me in freestyle because I do a lot of fast proximity freestyle where timing is still really important. I use DJI mainly for cruising and taking in the beautiful scenery. Cheers!
@ledrib you guys have the best produced music in your videos. Us audiophiles appreciate it!
Great video. It still baffles my mind how Alex flies the way he does. I was on the edge of my seat and ducking through those gates. It is nice to see that digital is getting very close. Looking forward to how it continues.
Great video. Thank you so much!! It's good to hear from a professional pilot's prospective. I would also love to hear about how pure analog compares to the Bytefrost setup which is suppose to have constant latency and HD like image quality.
Put two cameras on same drone, one digital, one analog, put a small millisecond timer mounted on drone in bottom frame of cameras. Analyze footage.
Good video, I knew variable latency would be the issue when it comes to the consistency top tier race pilots require to shave every fraction of a second on each part of a track but digital does make the viewing experience enjoyable as a spectator.
I am seriously considering a digital setup for myself just for the joy of flying freestyle with such an amazing image and the smaller lighter offerings being produced with caddx are making it a lot more attractive for sure.
Anxiously waiting for things to come back in stock in your guy's store!
I've had an mmcx pop loose like that and while you can fly, it feels like it stutters. I think it's very likely that's why Vanover thought there was variable latency. I mean, it's very likely he could perceive latency that the rest of us can't. But you should definetly rerun this test with a DJI system there's no questions about!
Thanks, this helped me decide that I'm definitely getting into FPV on a digital system!
Best part of this video was Bardwell coming in late at the end. 😂😂😂 Seriously thought good fair and impartial review guys.
After flying a DJI system for a few weeks these results agree with what I've seen. The dji system is amazing and for 90% of my flights it will be my go to system.
However when I'm doing medium range proximity with bikes and side by sides at 30-70mph I'll be running analog for sure.
Great review, fellas! 🤘🤠
I had problems hitting the ground and getting much lower to the ground when I switched to DJI too. The DJI camera FOV is narrower than the foxeer cams I was using so you are getting less ground in the DJI view making you fly closer to the ground until you get used to it. Also the stick throw is longer on the DJI radio especially if you are used to the tarranis short throw throttle gimbal. That compounds the problem because your thumb needs to move further. Its a bit unreasonable to expect the same lap times and consistency with a system he has had very little time to adjust to especially at that crazy level!
Great Episode and absolute truth!! I Love HD FPV too, but even with Freestyle i hate variable Latency… For me also Analog the most time!!
Pretty interesting, guys! Thanks a lot! 😃
Great video! I've noticed the slight video latency on larger DJI drones such as the Phantom series can be a pesky issue when trying to directly line up with an object and thought this might translate into a substantial for FPV racing or freestyle. Very nice to see that it's not much of a concern unless you are competing at the highest FPV race levels :-). Also gooood Lord your fast :-D haha I kept hearing Top Gun 1 "Feel the need for speed!" Replaying in my head while you were flying analog!
Respect for honest review. This is what we saying, but it's way better than i initially thought though.
It was a fair test. Good job. I agree it will only get better, remember the old quad video you did a week ago, it will get better.
Really good and fair test 👌🏻 this kid is so fast 🚀
You can wear glasses with the dji system. That was a big factor in my purchase decision.
One thing that surprised me was that the HD gives me confidence to hit many more gaps and try more tricks than I would have with my eachine box goggles.
Thanks for making this video not sponsored by DJI! :)
Funny how you instantly notice the truth coming out lol
Mashi FPV dji is still a big rotor Riot partner tho
Only reason I gave this video a like!
thanks for the helpful video!!
I cannot fly as fast as Alex (very few can) so latency won't be a problem for most of us. Great video... keep it up. Huge fan over here.
13:31 JB's latency XD
Gday RR, nice work you guy's with this test,, watching Alex smashing gates with analog and digital, dam he's fast on analog wow!!! great work RR.👍🛸
Alex Vanover you are a freak of nature! Respect!
A nice well balanced review, digital and analog both have a place in FPV. Their are many variables in them both, and both are becoming cheaper.
Dammit!!! How the hell is Vanny soo fast!!??? Love watching this dude fly. I'm Just a witness to greatness over here on my couch lmao. Great episode guys. Love it
Damn! Vanny is a beast, that course was badass and FPV OASIS IS THE SHIT! Great episode guys!
Awesome idea
I always love the Duga Dive music!!:)
Vanover is pretty much the only person I 100% trust to not let sponsorship sway his opinion. Sorry everyone else, I still love yah ^_^
And people question why I still fly analog :)
sure you switched to DJI now hehe :)
@jrc fpv right 🤣
@@jayevox932 lol
Hi Mr steele I getting in to fpv because of you.
This is to JB, drib and you. Thank you guys for all your informative videos,. You guys helped me out so much! I’ve been flying since March 2020. I work and have 2 kids but still strive to fly. You guys inspired me to fly more! I hate the conflict, but love the enthusiasm, and personality’s you guys have! Love you guys and stay positive! You guys and Vanover stay positive and humble ! We appreciate you all.
Love your videos
Thanks, cool 👍
One of the best! Bonus points RR.
Crazy pilot ,,, awesome
Like the comparison videos and community spot lights at the same time. I would like to see 8 in a race on 1200mw that would be cool to see.
He's as fast as he talks! Cheers you could use the same radio and just the cam and air station
Alex is a Monster! Insane how fast he is
"did you guys talk about the variable latency" hahahah that was perfect Joshua
great test! Our analog video systems actually have a variable latency as well. But digital definitely has a higher average latency. Also, I think there could have just been a difference in weight between the 2 builds. Digital will be the future in racing but it's not because of the latency, it's because of the lack of a ground station for judging.
Ron is Awesome!!!! OAS Hobby, baby.
I just don’t wanna ditch my current radio which I’ve now grown to love and know really well. That’s what has me sitting back waiting mostly. Maybe I’ll just go with the air unit or I may just dive in tho and build a freestyle/fun park flying quad with the DJI system tho eventually. This way I won’t need a GoPro to record some footage to show friends and family.
Good video!
if we had 120hz on the analogue system, i would stay on that. but for the future, i see digital as a clear winner. let it be for the 120hz alone
If you use the new update on crossfire (crossfire shots) it's 150hz. It's faster than the 120hz.
@@miklosko3355 what does the refresh rate of the display have to do with the signal used to communicate to the quad?
@@miklosko3355 crsfShot lowers the Overall delay from setpoint to Action, it doesnt have anything to do with any Frequency Change.
@@Monolize czcams.com/video/66Hyqv8wvAc/video.html watch Steele's video... Latency is important.
This is fun I love Science Lab with RR. Plus watching a racer, especially Alex is is so memorizing and fun.
8:32 this part was interesting, with how the signal struggles going close to the ground. I imagine something similar happens with analog right? Like with static? Would a raised platform for pilots help out both of these systems in that regard?
That was some INTENSE flying, But I think Bardwell's mad TIMER skillz stole the show. 😆
Proves one thing first and foremost..Vanover is really a sick pilot.
absolutely cracked
I need to come watch you fly one of these weekends
Love, love, love OAS!
Appreciate the disclaimer at the start by drew
Bardwell made my day 🤙🤙🤙
i learned something today :-)
Shoutout to drew!! Dji FTW improved me as a pilot as well.
Did anyone else see the new episode of MacGyver over the weekend? It started with some FPV freestyle!
First diving a building and across an intersection, and then into a multi-storey parking lot!
Sadly only mere seconds of footage, but it's still FPV freestyle!
I would have used the same radio for both kwads, and used the air unit just for video
The latency of the dji transmiter is sub 4ms. In fastsbus protocol It's the lowest of them all and it is part of the dji hd kit
@@hansturpyn5455 I use just the video from DJI. radio is still my taranis qx7 with R9-Module. No DJ-Radio.
I agree, switching radio isn't a good idea.
NEW EXPERIMENT! Though perhaps that was done to avoid high weight discrepancies
Hans Turpyn not really the latency, but the difference to the pilot. It’s one more variable you can’t really account for.
I think with any level of competition you need a high and consistent frame rate over a perfect image. Whether it is ESport or racing.
This was a great episode. I think you should do an indoor shoot out version
Same as the good old vacuum tube audio amplifiers vs digital amplifiers argument...😎 it is what you prefer....
Love those comparisons, really a exemplary pilot. I use to fly Quads DJI fpv in 2013 and Goblin Helis, I feel in love with fpv. But the suckiest part was the Fat Shark analog back those times, the multipathing aimages was just annoying, waited months to hopefully tech will improve, months turned to yrs. Then I quit, when DJI came out with awesome googles I was skeptics. Now proven tons of happier pilots I'm back flying as we speak. IF difference of night and day quality images is of concern, I'd stay with DJi, if 10th of millisec is of concern analog is the choice it's a simpliers bits to transmit more precise,
Just my opinion. I think that as a new FPV pilot whom never had worn DJI or FATSHARK Goggles, I would think that DJI would be preferable for freestyle so your view is more clear and crisp. Analog for racing.
For me personally I think as a hobbiest I would prefer to see my surroundings more clearly without the static so I feel that I am actually in the cockpit.
The down side is you would have to put the camera in all your kwads. Gets expensive.
Maybe for me I will get the DJI goggles and 2 camera package combo along with a rapid fire analog add on so I can fly analog kwads. Since most kwads are analog and cheaper to build. (I think)
Just my opinion.
Thank You Guys
Great episode.
Hey guys, first nice episode. I wanted to ask u guys on how many mw. do u flown with the Dji ? Because I guess the latancy gets better with 1200mw. Thank you, and keep going like this
I will consider to use DJI digital system what if DJI make external digital module for using other goggles like my HDO2, otherwise no chance to change them. because of compatibility issues.BTW thanks for testing this Alex.
When i flew DJI stuff, the scary part was, the degradation would be slow and avoidable, but there were times it'd go from good to frozen. Not sure if they somehow eliminated that, but if the Mavics didn't have auto stability and return to home, they'd be goners. Analog is much more predictable and even in major signal failure, you can still often see ENOUGH to get back or avoid crashing. Gotta wait for DJI to get it better.
Sweet flying. Really fast. I flew that track in december with OAS but my fastest was 15. I dont think anyone one did 11.xx that day.
Nice Bro 😁🤘🛸
For racing analog. But for video and clear video and cinematic DJI and to enjoy the scenery.
Vous êtes si fort que vous pourriez piloter les yeux fermés !! vraiment vous êtes sur-réaliste !
Latency will also always depend on who's flying too. I play games on PC and I've always maximized framerate even with 60hz monitors, you can FEEL the difference with higher frames (Less input latency). Rocking 240hz monitors and the like now too is insanely good but not everyone is sensitive to this though and there is always someone who thinks it doesn't matter and TO THEM it may not. I for one would likely have issues with variable latency, but as mentioned if you're not absolutely ripping ass taking tight corners etc you'd likely get away with it easily. I'd agree that cineflying would be best case scenario for these and I do hope they improve this tech quickly!
There's quite a few settings that influence the stability of the video stream. With a lower quality video the stream ought to be more stable.
Wat settings did you use?
