why i stopped using goodnotes for notes @uchicago

  • I've been struggling with using goodnotes throughout second year at uchicago, and finally came to the conclusion that an ipad-only system was just not it for me. I take a lot of classes where being able to hand-write things are great (formulas for econ, highlighting certain areas in slides etc) - but all of my classes require some degree of large text (either from the textbook or online) or code. Since then, I've been searching for a better dual ipad-laptop system, and this is what I came up with!
I know there are a tremendous amount of aesthetic notetaking videos on youtube with goodnotes on ipad (truly beautiful), but for me practicality weighs more than pretty notes, so I'm going to retire goodnotes from my uchicago study routine, and make it more my go-to for teaching classes

To solve your paper size problem in Onenote go to "View" > "Paper size" > and from the dropdown where it says "auto" select "A4" This will ensure your page is sized to A4.

What I've been using on my laptop + pen tablet setup is Microsoft Whiteboard + Notion. I use Whiteboard to make mind maps and written exercises, and I export it into an image and add it to Notion. I totally agree with you. I´m studying electrical engineering and using OneNote is my way to go. While most students use an Ipad as a secondary device, i use a Surface Pro, because I need to run engineering programs like MatLab, CLion, LabView, LTSpice and many more programs. OneNote has the great capability to share and use Notes simultanously with your main device and also with other students. I think writing focused studies are better set with good notes, because it is optimized for that. But when you step into multi handling programs, having a device with a dedicated OS and having OneNote is the best for an optimized workflow

I am specifically using Goodnotes to make handwritten notes and not needing to carry around tons of books or printouts. Yes as an EE student i do quite a bit of coding. But the code lives inside project folders of the IDE on my laptop, only code samples or examples get mostly handwritten into goodnotes.
I don’t want to type my notes, for one, I’m to slow and it’s way less stressful. Some of my profs don’t even allow typed notes because it’s too distracting in small classes (~20-30 people). And with AirDrop and a Mac it’s no challenge at all to get a picture to goodnotes. You literally just have to command+c on the Mac and paste inside goodnotes, done.

hi not sure what you want to export to pdf specifically for, but if you aren't exporting for printing, i believe you can export to pdf via the app on the ipad and get a full pdf that doesn't have that weird cut-off issue that you get when you export on a laptop. The pdf will just be a full custom-size page that fits everything. hope that helps someone!

So the only thing I need to do, is mark some things, highlight some slides and write some additional things on the Slides and for that GoodNotes is still the best I‘ve tried.
The only thing I‘m not that happy with, are the geometry features. Maybe a ruler, more options to edit the lines after they were created and the possibility to create lines that are curved in multiple directions would be nice.

I HAVE to use my iPad because I have a lot of PowerPoint slides or non-PowerPoint slides that I have to take notes on; then, I use my MacBook or Microsoft Surface to type my essays. Since watching the first time I’ve been using OneNote for a year… and now I’m changing to GoodNotes. OneNote worked very well for a while but the long loading time both in my iPad and computer was really annoying, for example just opening OneNote on my computer was really slow and the synchronisation would not be immediate and sometimes would not work at all. Also, when marking big sections of notes it would be very slow at loading which just gets on my nerves. But the thing that made me switch was when I tried to save my notes to PDFs and 1) it was very slow 2) the quality was bad and 3) it ruined one of my notebooks. I cannot get in to those notes and I’m so scared of it happening again. So GoodNotes it is! For context I mainly use handwritten notes and annotations.

i totally agree, i only use goodnotes to annotate econ slides since every single class had like 40 lecture slides (primarily why i got an ipad in the first place) or to write my econ and math psets. The only formally handwritten notes I use goodnotes for is math since my professors still use the chalkboard, and i cant type math very quickly. But other than that, onenotes is perfect for creating my study guides for econ. I can type really quickly and rearrange typed text in different boxes, saving me hand muscle pain and time, as well as allowing me to command+F any specific economics concepts or equations I need to find.

If you want to do a set page size, so it doesn't cut off.. you can go into the start menu and look for a program labeled as one note (without the for Windows 10). Then you can set page size.
