Fast and simple urban sketching

- What could you sketch in 10, 15 or 20 minutes? I have never done a timed sketch before, but I thought it would be fun to see how much could be achieved in say 20 minutes. I must say I felt a bit nervous!! Putting a little time pressure on yourself teaches you lots. You have to simplify, you have to be decisive, you sketch in a more intuitive way. There is no time for careful measurement and pondering what to put in or leave out. You can't be neat and colour carefully inside the lines. You just need to get a wiggle on. It also shows you that the excuse 'I have no time to draw' is just not valid!!
I am using an A5 moleskine sketch book, and 0.2, 0.4 and 0.5 mm waterproof fineliners. A waterbrush and a few watercolours completes the materials list. Choose whatever you have to hand, but if you plan to add watercolour, make sure your pens are waterproof and your paper is thick enough not to buckle.

I saw that @tobyurbansketch (check out his channel) regularly does 10 minute sketching and I wondered how I would get on. I felt surprisingly nervous starting out, but it was fun and I shall certainly do more.
I am also rather proud of my clock counting up in the film too - this is highly technical editing for me!!

I like this. I like the way you've left things out and restricted your "non-focal point features by using cool colours for them, in order to allow your focal point, namely the bunting to 'shine' .

Love this. Very inspirational for my upcoming trip to Sicily. I only wish more "tutorial/example" videos would include a shot of the reference photo in the frame while drawing. That would be wildly helpful to me in understanding the process. Thank you for taking the time to show us how.
it is tricky to have the sketch as big as poss and fit the reference in. if I can’t, I usually pop it on the Community tab, so people can access it…

You can do it! Drawing is a muscle and it gets stronger the more you use it. Even ten minutes of doodling a day will get you fitter and stronger.

@@melissamortimer4457 to be honest the end point doesn’t matter. A sketch, however brief and wonky, will bring back more memories than any photo

I do like the thicker lines that bring it forward.
This encourages me to give this type sketching a try. I'm way too tight.
the time limit will really force you to loosen up!
@Liz Chaderton I have been looking at part of my neighbors house for some time, wanting to paint it in watercolor. I think I will give it a try in this style. Without my glasses it looks like a face.

just a normal one, so it’s a bit thin! As long as you don’t use too much water it behaves itself

I wanted it to pop more. It kind of just faded into everything else. Just my opinion
