  • This green tomato chutney recipe for me is the perfect way to preserve and use those fruits up that just aren't going to ripen on the vine as the season comes to an end.
It goes so well with cheese at christmas, in a good ploughmans lunch, or just as a sauce at a barbeque. It also just gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing I've put effort into growing them and don't end up wasting anything at the end. Nothing beats a good plot to plate recipe.
    Ingredients
    Makes 750 ml
    500g green tomatoes
    1 large onion (250g)
    1 large bramley apple (200g)
    50g raisins
    1/2 red chilli
    200ml malt vinegar
    100g soft light brown sugar
    1 tsp yellow mustard seeds
    1 tsp nigella seeds
    1 tsp sea salt

Been another funny year for tomatoes! They have slow ripening again. Picking a bowl every two or three days. Looking after my sister in law's as well so have been doing chutney so they don't get wasted. 35 jars so far.

That is a lot of chutney, you are doing better than me. I planted the same amount of plants in the same place as in the video and have had 5 tomatoes so far 😪

Interesting with the spices. I always use a bit of grated ginger and garam masala. I found an old recipe that said quatre epice which turned out to be garam masala. I also invert the jars when they are hot and back again. You then hear them popping when they cool. I think it is a vacuum thing. Spoon a bit in your gravy when you do roast pork. Lifts it in my humble opinion. Keep up the creations. I’ve just made 2kg of plum jam in 30 degree heat. Family better be grateful. 😡🤣🤣

Never heard of inverting the jars before, always good to learn new techniques. I'll give it a go next time. Definitely with you on the heat, I spent as much time focusing on not turning into a puddle of sweat as I did the filming 🥵

I freeze dry sliced green tomatoes so I can have fried green tomatoes all year round. Take the other pieces left over and make relish n chutney.

Sounds like a great idea, I've never tried freezing fresh tomatoes
