How to Knit Fingerless Mitts Without a Pattern // Technique Tuesday

- This video explains how to knit a basic pair of fingerless mitts for any size hand, using any yarn weight. The basic components of a fingerless mitt are explained, as well as how to do the calculations to plan stitch counts, shaping, and customization.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Yarn quantity required for a pair of mitts varies, depending on yarn weight, size of mitt, and length of each component part. In general, 100g is sufficient for any pair of mitts knit when using a light weight to medium weight yarn (fingering to worsted weight), but might be cutting it close if the yarn is bulky weight.
INFORMATION ON PINK MITT DEMONSTRATED IN VIDEO:
Hand circumference: 7''; gusset length: 2.75''
Yarn: University of Glasgow Cochno Farm Wool, DK weight, 120 yds/110 m per 50g ball
Needles used: Signature Needle Arts 32'' fixed length circular, size uS4/3.5mm
Quantity needed for both mitts: slightly more than the 120 yds in a 50 g ball
Gauge: 5.5 sts and 7.5 rnds/in
CO 40 sts
Thumb 16 sts
Section 1: cuff: k2p2 for 20 rnds (2.75'')
Section 2, gusset: 2.75'' (20 rnds), 6 inc rnds, 20 rnds total
Section 3, upper hand: 14 rnds stockinette, 6 rnds ribbing
Section 4, thumb: 16 sts, 9 rnds stockinette, 6 rnds ribbing

I'm from the Philippines, a tropical country. We have no need to wear mittens but our dialysis patients needs them because it's cold inside the dialysis centers. Thus, I have to learn to make these mittens when my brother in law requested after I gave him a beanie hat for his birthday. He was so glad for the hat to keep his head warm during his dialysis sessions. Now to keep his fingers from freezing. Thank you, Roxanne, as always, you have guided me to be more confident in knitting projects I thought I could never do. May I be able to make more but this time mittens to give to more dialysis patients. More power to your channel. INFINITE THUMBS UP!!!

Great video, as always. Thank you! I'd just like to point out that centimeters are SO much easier to calculate with than inches. Start with say a 20 cm (8") hand. Yarn that gives you 22 stiches per 10cm (4") gives you 2.2 stitches per cm. 2.2 x 20 cm gives you the number of stitches you need: 44. Even if you're used to inches, you can buy a tape measure that has both, and use the cm side to calculate with. :)

@@ramelajeridian6245 The measurements I gave are for anyone with a palm that measures 20 cm in circumference. Before starting, measure the hand for which you're planning to knit the mitts, and make a swatch to find out how many stitches per 10cm your yarn will give you. By the way, I don't knit a thumb on my mitts, I simply leave a slot for the thumb -- because I want to leave my thumbs free, and also I want to be able to easily push the mitts up my wrists in order to wash my hands.

Yes,Yes,Yes I 'm inspired! I do love fingerless mitts. Afraid of doing thumb gusset!!! So want to make some for gifts. This has inspired me to try again!!! Very clear tutorial, I love your knitting math! I knit my fingerless mittens top down so I decrease for the thumb gusset rather than increase. Simply because I prefer decreasing to increasing. ;)
This year I made my first pair of fingerless mittens, with rib+ mock cable rib panel, and with no pattern! I have never been able to find a right pattern for myself so I'm used to customizing, but this one was slightly more challenging, I loved it! Thank you for the video, this is really helpful and I'll have it for the next time I make another pair!

Again I learned something new from you. I always have gaps when making fingerless mitts. Now I won't have them anymore. It was so bad that I was knitting them flat and seaming the sides without a thumb, just a hole for the thumb.

I found like 5 balls of sock/fingering yarn and they're pretty soft. Thought I could make em into gloves but all the knit patterns I saw were incredibly complicated since there were different stitch counts that I HAD to substitute into my version and that was super hard😭

I love this! Thank you! I've been trying to make my own mitts for a while lately because my gauge is always off or my yarn isn't quite right for the patterns I find. I've been working off of a one-page guide "a mitten is shaped like a hand" from Ultimate Mittens by Robin Hansen, combined with the Tin Can Knits simple mitten that has a variety of yarn weight directions. I've ripped back several half done mitts so far because I hadn't got it quite right. This is much clearer & much appreciated!!

Happy New Year Roxanne...Thanks for another practical and in depth knitting demonstration. You always include so much information about little things that help make projects turn out better...like picking up two extra stitches in the gap when starting the thumb extension and then decreasing them together with the last and first stitches on the gussett.
Have you ever knit both items at the same time. I started doing that a while ago with smaller items like socks and mittens and I find that it helps me finish both items and have them tensioned the same. It was a bit of an organizational leap for me but not too difficult once I got the hang of it. Certainly not for everyone ... but a nice quiet adventure.
I have tried knitting 2aat, but I prefer one at a time. I have occasionally done two at a time, but on separate needles, so that I could remember what I was doing at a particularly tricky part, and then repeat it. Some people find it helps them finish the project, because both are done at the same time, but for me, it always feels like I'm going super slow, so I prefer one at a time. :-)

I just found this video so you may not see this comment but your metal gauge ruler is the exact same one I have. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m 63 and I’ve had mine since I was a kid.❤️
Susan Bates still makes that gauge ruler! I had another one that was older (might have been my grandmother's) that accidentally got left on an airplane. That one had the US 6 hole marked as 4.25 mm, instead of 4mm.

As a new knitter, I was wishing you had shown on this video how you had picked up the 4 stitches at the thumb gusset and then shown how you decreased by 2 stitches after the 1st round. 😢 I clicked on the link you provided but got confused by the three or so options that was provided. I haven't watched this video so what I'm adding may be reduntant. I've made fingerless gloves without a pattern with just a few basic pieces of information like the circumference of the widest part of my hand and the gauge of the yarn I'd be using. I knit them on straight needles and left a space for my thumb. So it was two separate seams on each glove.

I have no idea what a bobble bind off would be! That's not a standard term by any means. In order to figure it out, I'd need context, like seeing what the project was (pattern photo), and any information the pattern might include related to the bind off. Often something like this would be included in the list of technique/stitch patterns prior to the cast on instructions.
HI Roxanne ! Sorry to get back so late in replying to you. This bobble bind off is on Joji Locatelli's ' Julie's Wrap ' . ( Ravelry ) There is a technique section covering this but, it seems many have had difficulty getting the hang of it at first. I am still stumped. Ty this tutorial is very helpful . I was wondering because I got a little confused on the thumb for the gusset. How do you know how many increases you need for the thumb like you said on your glove you needed 12 how did you get that number?
