"Tinmama" 1940 Chevy (Ep. 4) Independent Rear Suspension

- In this episode we install a 2017 Mustang IRS (Independent rear suspension) in the 1940 chevy sedan that I'm building for my mom. This suspension setup is going to be AWESOME!! The story of the car: My dad bought the shell of this 1940 chevy 2 door sedan in 1990, to build for my mom. Due to financial and health issues, it had been on the backburner ever since. Almost 30 years later and I decided its my responsibility to get this car done for mama. "Tinmama"!

Did I see correct.?.Solid mounts in the rear and rubber in the front.That could cause the weld to crack in the rear.Id cut a old tire and put a piece in the rear mount to give it a little flex.
Yeah on final install we put a little piece of rubber between the rears. Good observation and sorry I didn't mention that

I see a possible issue, you have 1/2 the sub frame rubber mounted and the other not. Those rubber mounts allow flex to occur. The half that is solid bolted will be trying to keep that flex from happening, thus creating a stress point. I think it will be minimal but something to consider.
iambeeman1 good observation, but I'm well ahead of ya on that one. Just couldn't figure out a way to solid mount it and make it look halfway decent. The mustang came stock with 500hp+ and dudes drive them nuts. I'd bet my mom won't drive this car like that. lol
Tinman 2 Kustoms you could knock out the rubber and get a solid slug machined to fit the hole and bolt it up that way. But its very unlikely to ever be an issue, so probably not worth worrying about.

How much did you pay for the rear.mustung assembly
Ever have any issues using a 110 for chassis work? I got a old Lincoln 140, gonna upgrade to the eastwood 175 some time soon. I used it for shock tabs and i want to square my control arms on my toyota to get rid of the stabilizer arm, but nervous to do anything structural.
EvanThaG no sir I've never had any problems. Even welding 3/8" plate. Just gotta be smarter than the metal. Stack the odds in your favor. When in doubt, double pass it out. Root pass and a fat weave over the top. And no extension cord on the welder, extra clean metal, etc.
Btw, the eastwood machine is a good machine I've heard. I'm just having a hard time saving up money right now lol
well gives me some more confidence to tackle some projects myself. Anything I will be doing would be on a minitruck or hotrod, so 1/8" or smaller usually, somtimes a lil thicker. That frame on wild torquey also stood up to some violent launches too and hauls that goose neck.
EvanThaG yessir exactly! And some of those welds on torquey were quite shitty if I do say so myself lol our big welder took a shit right when I started that build, so learning how to weld with a small welder took some time. But it works. If I were building an off-road vehicle, mudtruck or anything faster than 8 seconds, I'd use a bigger welder. But for the time being it works haha

James Walker thanks! It's all in the welding settings, being comfortable and using decent materials. Believe me, I'll be investing in a larger one, but this one has worked for me for the last few years. Just can't burn through stuff as much as with a larger welder
