    Bellingham fired a staff memeber amidst disagreements: goal90.com/jude-bellingham-fi...
    How Have We Lost The Number 10 In Football?
    The position used to be reserved for the cream of the crop in the team who was behind all attacks. As such, one had to be gifted in dribbling, passing and shooting, making such players a problem in every attacking sense. Outside of these superficial characteristics, they also had to have incredible football IQ and vision of the plays they intended to create. An added bonus that has been spotted through the years is also a Messiah complex and an ability to ‘carry’ the team when needed. For decades, the most important and creative players in every team played this position; Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Sneijder, Riquelme, Dennis Bergkamp amongst others.
    The role though technically an attacking midfielder has long been dubbed the ‘number 10’ because the number was worn by those in that position. It was called the ‘enganche’ in Argentina, which translates as ‘hook’, to describe its importance in connecting midfield and attack. As sides began to move away from the 4-3-3 of the 1970s to the 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 diamond of the 1980s, the ‘hook’ became even more important. In the modern era, the number 10 usually plays underneath a single center-forward, with a double pivot in behind in a 4-2-3-1 structure. A single number 10 is also used in a 3-4-1-2 shape.
    With the evolution of the game, many teams prefer to use defensive midfielders or box to box midfielders in positions where the 10 traditionally used to operate. This and the lack of defensive cover from players in this position is slowly leading to its extinction in the modern game.

    This can explain why in modern football we’re seeing less individual brilliance from players and we have a lot of very good players but now they tend to operate within the tactical system of their team. Football is evolving and we’ve see how managers have become more demanding from a tactical perspective it makes teams more functional and it’s creates a competitive environment for football where there’s a lot of emphasis on team play and defensive stability and balance, but at the same time it’s came at cost where you see individuals, their abilities are diminishing and you can see why there’s a massive drop off in the individual qualities of players today than it was back in the day where players had more freedom and confidence to express themselves.

And I’m reading the future her, there will be a time in which a new Maradona appears “I hope I will still be around” and he will make us believe that football is still beautiful and creative. But if we are talking about the closest thing to a number 10 who basically is a master of all things attacking it would be KDB at the moment. Messi is obviously still here and there’s some other players that are pretty close. But out of the best players, imo it would be KDB.

    • @MR_IG
      @MR_IG Před 4 měsíci +3

      I actually think the football tactics now uses like 2 tens. I mean many teams use left and right interiors high up. And that's where you see the likes of pedri, musiala, foden are being deployed. This then limits their freedom. However, back then the use of just 1 ten, gives the player more freedom. But saying there are no 10s in football anymore is an understatement. The 10 position is no more but the players are still here just not being played there.

In the past the the left winger was left footed and the right winger played on the right so they could get to the end of the field and center the ball. Nowdays wingers play on the opposite side of the field to have more shoots on goal and play on the side of the field that would be for the No.10.

Most teams are adopting high press or counter attacking football so teams are just looking for athletic and hardworking players rather than techincally skilled slow players that can control the tempo of a game and that is also to do with analytics. Statically, you have more of a chance of scoring when you press high, force them into a mistake in their half it will be easier and quicker to score.

      @@GMBlunderfish1 we lost 9's as in we don't have there many world class strikers that play as a natural 9 anymore.. even Harry Kane plays deeper thenn he used to and Mbappe is deployed as a 9 but doesn't play like a natural 9. Richardson ain't world class, Darwin Nunez has the potential to be but other than that, there are not many out there. Same as 10's, Messi is in the twilight of his career. I can't even think of 5 worl class number 10.

      Modric has the aura of number 10 but he plays in a deeper position, Bellingham is definetely not a number 10 or enganche, he is a new type of footballer, a combination between a number 8 and number 9. It's like a false 9 but more midfielder than striker. De Bruyne is a modern number 10, not a classic number 10, not an enganche. The last classic number 10 was Ozil and maybe James Rodriguez. Maddison and Odeegard are close to classic number 10.

    I think football has lost its soul. Lets be frank what are you paying CDM and defenders for if they can't defend? I mean most attacks usually consist of 4 players and if your not out of position you should have at 5 plus the GK back there but Morden football wants a striker to help the defence, who helps the striker? Defence should man up and do their damn jobs. High line and forcing cb to be ball players is a double edged sword

      Technically yes, i believe most number 10’s could Also play as good second strikers . A second striker if no number 10/ attacking midfielder could play that role .
      An attacking midfielder and have an eye for goal , Great in attacking positions.
      Kaka , Zidane , Ronaldinho, Messi, could play the role of the second striker. And many of them did and flourished
