@Swapn Lok Prime ministers do not expand empires. An emperor does. And that is why they were the de-facto kings. What the nominal kings could not do the prime ministers did while the "kings" were busy squabbling among themselves. There were only two true Maratha Emperors before the squabbling began and the "prime ministers" had to take over to become the de-facto kings to save the empire. I will stop at that. I do not intend to wash my dirty linen in public. The state of politics as it was in the past in our country, (the Marathas were not British in case you forgot) the king held the position of power and for most times led the army himself to expand his empire. Moreover the prime ministerial position in the Maratha empire was an advisory or administrative one. The wars, if ever in the absence of the king, were fought by generals who were supposed to be more well-versed in war-craft than the prime-minister. If you are so enamored by the British, then let me tell you that Britain was already a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary form of government even before they came to India. The decisions of land acquisition, defense etc. were taken by the parliament and implemented through the viceroy who was an agent of the British government and not the monarch. So it would be really stupid to compare the British with the Maratha situation. The fact of the matter is that the entitled kings or emperors of the Maratha empire fell from grace (with internal squabbles et al) after the first two rulers (you can count the third ruler if you want) and retired to the relative quiet of a small town in the hinterland leaving the prime-ministers, generals and subjects to fend for themselves and save the empire. This is recorded history. And that is why I call the prime ministers de-facto kings and not just de-facto heads of administration. They had to defend the kingdom, look after the administration and also lead armies into war to expand the empire which they did with a high level of grace and integrity. Do not insult their sacrifices.
