There are brighter lanterns (LP gas/Coleman fuel, etc.), but there's a warm, soothing quality about the live flame of an oil lamp that thaws even the chilliest cockles of one's heart. Candle lanterns offer the same ambience, IMO. We keep a smaller version around for use during power outages, along with candles and (yes) battery-powered LED lanterns and flashlights. The oil lamp is still my favorite. Thanks for the look at yours!

I have been using both these items for some time, I only have the self coloured lantern. The case is over priced and absorbs lamp oil but it doesn’t protect your lamp from damage and has already proven to be effective. I am still happy I bought both items because the lamp is awesome and definitely creates the right mood . The top gets very hot so that is worth noting if you do not want to get burnt, the voice of experience talking. It is also very photogenic and features in loads of my camping pictures and videos. Keep up the good work.

I was watching Corporals Corners on Sunday. He did a Red Dead Redemption 2 trappers cabin build. I have to say the scene was not set until he hung his storm lantern right at the end. There is something romantic and fitting to their aesthetics when it comes to camping in the bush. Great kit Andy, I agree about the colour, strange bloody choice considering. Hey ho.

Also known as a Cold blast lantern because it sources cold fresh air from beneath the hood and delivers it directly to the flame. The other type are known as "Hot blast" but not quite as bright.

I had to get it shipped in from Denmark. Ireland doesn’t sell them. I persuaded my local hardware store to get them in.
It’s the knock off version he’ll getting in, unfortunately not the feuer Hand.

You're over filling the tank. Fuel will get into the plenum and then come out at the air tubes as they are crimped and not fuel tight. Fill to no more than about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the fill neck.

Sorry, this will be an annoying, germans will allways correct someone, comment! ;-) Feuerhand sounds german and i think Petromax is/was a german brand. It sounds and means more like "firehand" than like "fewerhand". The american "foyer" sounds close enouth ;-) Just a fun fact and nearly every foreign brand in the world is misspronounced around the world! :-D

Bismillah....thanks for a good review of this lamp. Both this and cheap knock off's are available on ebay. I baught the cheaper £10 oil lamp from ebay and it slowly kept leaking, as I tilt the lamp in any direction it leaked, on lowest setting the flame was low for 5 or six mins then the flames shot up to the highest setting by itself...fire hazard...!!!!! At this point the control for the wick did nothing.. hence I threw it in the bin....DO NOT BUY THE CHEAP OIL LAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @smokinrider

Bearing in mind the Chinese versions 1) work perfectly 2) cost £8 not loads, then you can’t really knock them.
Seen you and others using them for years with zero issues. So why pay £30 for something with a flash name, that probably came out the same factory.
Let’s face it. You fill it, you light it, you hang it up. Ain’t exactly a rocket engine.

See history on their website available in English as well feuerhand.de/en/geschichte/
